    The 2011 iMac is incredible to work with, the entire computer can be torn apart and replaced with newer components. This makes the 2011 iMac one of the best options for an upgrade!
    In this video I replace the older AMD Radeon 6970m video card with an Nvidia gtx 765m and show how to properly modify the old heatsink to get a perfect fit. I will also talk about the benefits and drawbacks to this process.

    great video I bought my 2011 Imac when it came out and I loved it. It bricked right after the Graphics Card recall date had passed. So I have been intermittently baking the card in the oven over the years and lowering the fan temperature. I refuse to pay an extortionate amount for a old card and I’m suspect of the chip repair swap-out. I have been looking for a permanent solution for ages and I am gonna go with your solution. Thankyou so much for the vid as it’ll help me out loads. I actually took out the CD Rom Drive to allow more air to flow through. However, now that the new m1 mac mini's are out, the mainboard is so small, I think I could probably gut the imac and stuff the M1 inside. Would need a control board for the display and run an internal HDMI or display port cable. Haven't figured out how to route IO yet, but probably some male to female adapter cables will do. Would be awesome if you want to try something like this

    Slightly off topic but still related... It'd been common knowledge for a few years that the 2011 Imacs cant go beyond the 3.4ghz i7 2600 "Sandybridge" CPU. Even though Sandybridge and its successor "Ivybridge" share the same 1155 socket, everytime somebody tried it, it didn't work. Well that might be about to change. One of the developers over at Macrumours has worked out a way in theory to create a hack for the iMac's firmware that would allow the 3770 CPU to work in the 2011 machines. The one piece of info that had been missing till now was the piece of microcode specific to the 3770 CPU... and thats just been found. Hopefully, if all goes well, we should get an update in the next few days...

      Unfortunately I should have held off on my earlier post as it seems that the microcode hack is another dead end...
      I've been chatting with the developer who was working on this and his first language isn't English so it makes it a bit tricky to get all the details. Based on a thread I saw on the iFixit forum, I think there may be a chip on the motherboard that might be causing a conflict with the 3770 CPU.
      I'm no expert of course - I'm just gathering bits of info and passing them on in the hope it helps someone who really does know what their doing!

      Maria Clara Mathias Schwerdtner baking is something I have heard works, but it can ruin your oven (video cards have chemicals that can be harmful to say the least). So you almost need a spare oven or use a heat gun outside (right way). It’s also a short term solution, cause baking the card doesn’t last forever. Better to find a used 6750 if possible!

    I'm not a tinker myself, just looking to get the baked 2011 iMac going, so I thought you may be the right person to ask for an opinion on byuing a new unit. Thing is, there are plenty of nVidia 6970m's for sale, but my trusted repairsman suggests we go for just changing the chip as those full units you'd get from ebay are most probably just refurbished used ones, that would last for some time - maybe a week, maybe 5 years. No real deals on these graphic cards?

      geomed83 - the 6970m is the best that game in the 2011 iMac that will work right out of the box. The hard part is finding one that has more life on it! EBay is my go to at the moment, but they can be spendy and are all used, you can get a 1gb or 2gb model. You also could try hitting your old card with a heat gun for ~2 minutes or so to see if that reflows the solder on it. The other gpu options are the 6770m and 6750m (will require heat sink mods, since it only came on the 21.5inch I believe).

      Okay, so I think I need to step in here with some info I've gathered over the last year or so. It turns out that the 2009 - 2011 model imacs have similar issues affecting graphics cards, apple did flag up the AMD 6970 and 4850 cards as being prone to faults. This is true... however at least half the problem is due to the thermal design of these iMacs. Due to the cramped nature of the interior, air flow isn't great and it has a tendency to put excessive stress on both the GPU and HDs. This, coupled with the slightly less reliable cards makes these models prone to heat related faults.
      Knowing this info however can help you to at least mitigate the heat problems. Having a good fan control app is a very good start as it can allow you to amp up the fans when your iMac is working hard thereby taking some of the pressure off the GPU and the HD if you have one. Talking of HDs, swapping them out for SSDs is a great way to boost your iMac's performance AND help to alleviate the heat problem. SSDs are far less sensitive to heat than HDs for example and they take up less space therefore increasing airflow within your iMac. This and the HUGE boost to read and write speeds will make you feel like you bought a brand new machine! Pair them up with max RAM (32GB) and you shouldn't have any problems running multiple apps without a performance hit.
      Finally, depending on which CPU you have, you may be able to upgrade it too. I think the max CPU that will reliably work is the i7 3.4ghz 2600 "SandyBridge" CPU. This is one in my 2011 machine and other than a straight swap for a new one, I think I'm maxed out in that department. Hope all this helps you!

I just want to know if it is possible to do this before taking it down to the local tech shop to have the work done. Probably just stick with the 6970M 1G GPU as I really love this machine and do not want to risk any mods to it that require power tools! Just a couple questions, when replacing the HD with a SSD does the OS and all data/apps get moved over to the new SSD or do I need to re-install everything? Would an External SSD be a better option? And, have you learned anything further on the 32GB memory compatibility? External GPU so pricey but seem to be the answer. Thanks again for this video. Subscribed.

    • @messing-with-computers
      @messing-with-computers  Před 4 lety +1

      Few answers. It sounds like 32gb memory will work. For the ssd, you can buy a cable and install an ssd along with your existing hard drive and use software like “SuperDuper!” Which is my favorite to make a new disk bootable with all the old software in place. As for the gpu - is just stick with the 6970m for now if you are not having any issues. Most other gpus will take a modification with a saw or at least extensive tear down. Last - I would not recommend an external gpu. I have tried it and ... it’s just a huge pain. The software support is poor. Crashes, issues, etc.

Overall the Mac had new life in it and it was way better graphical performance... but I just wasn't using the new features or graphics performance. Which means the downsides were what pushed me away: dealbreakers for me were losing my ability to control brightness (max brightness was too much) and the software fixes to control brightness were impacting my ability to take screenshots (you see the overlay in the screenshots...). So what did I do? I sold the 765m on ebay and bought a $50 6750m and installed it! Note, that this actually required even MORE cutting of the original 6970m heatsink! Oh well, live and learn ;)

So its like setting your TV to max brightness and then putting a black cloth in front of it to make it less bright... power usage stays high, and it doesn't look as great.

    So I'm thinking of getting a pro to install for me - but the main reason is that I want to get Catlina or Big Sur to be able to run a version of Logic that is compatible with the version one of my collaborators is using (being able to export transparent vids for Keynote would be good too).
    Am I being silly? Is the patching going to sabotage everything else?

    Hi,
    Good video and comments… I would like to do it right away but….. I have an Apple iMac 27-Inch with Intel i5, Late 2012. The original nVidia GeForce GTX 675MX is toast… ☹
    Now, can I install any other similar setup card (from notebooks like), as I read that Apple has its own firmware on each card so different will not work. But the price is to high to buy an Apple compatible one… (£375 for an Apple card vs £69.99 pulled out from a Dell alienware notebook, for example).
    The Intel CPU embedded graphic can be activated to be used without the nVidia card, skipping the performance issues?

    • @messing-with-computers
      @messing-with-computers  Před 4 lety +1

      Eduard - the 2012 iMac does not have an upgradable / swappable GPU, it is actually soldered onto the motherboard. You have 2 options. 1 is a new motherboard, 2 is use the internal GPU like you were thinking. I would probably go with activating the intel CPU 'igpu' as the cheap option!

  • @BrennanTheContentWhisperer

    I got a late 2011 iMac on the way from eBay, 10gbs ram, 3.1ghz cpu, but the GPU is lacking. Would you recommend any that are not amazing but decent?

    • @messing-with-computers
      @messing-with-computers  Před 4 lety

      Which GPU to you have now? the 6770m? You could stay at high sierra and get a thunderbolt external GPU and keep things moderately 'simple' with some eGPU hacks. The other crazy option is what I do. I kept my 6750m in my 2011 imac and use a windows machine for gpu intensive tasks via 'parsec gaming' as a screen sharing app.
