    Southeast of the city of Syracuse, in a small hamlet called Jamesville, New York, sits the decaying ruins of an abandoned cement plant, once a core component of the region's industrial past. This cement plant was owned and operated by the Alpha Portland Cement Company, who first purchased the land from the Thomas Millen Company (also a cement producer) in 1917. It was in 1952 when the Alpha Portland Cement Company would construct the cement plant, later adding an additional few silos in 1959; at its peak, the plant operated fourteen buildings over 130 acres of land. Cement production and operations would persist at this plant for decades, up until its closure in 1981 due to financial issues. Ever since, this former cement plant has sat in ruins, slowly crumbling with time. Today, many remnants are left behind, from the railroad tracks that once distributed products, to the massive storage silos that held bulk materials, to the degrading office buildings where the heads of the plant worked.
    This was my first time exploring the abandoned Alpha Portland Cement Plant in Jamesville, New York, and I was hyped! This was only my second urban exploration experience in Upstate New York, and I found myself greatly enjoying it! Upon arrival at that site, I noticed just how massive and imposing the left-behind structures are--the cement silos almost reminded me of towering skyscrapers. I was also surprised to see just how much tagging and graffiti there was at this site; supposedly, it is a pretty popular urbex site for people in the Syracuse metro area! As one of the few abandoned industrial plants I've ever explored, I was in awe by the complex equipment and machinery left behind from its days as a cement producer. Jamesville was, and still partially is, an important component in New York's cement industry, so I was able to see this importance firsthand here! Unfortunately, this site does have a dark stain on its past: many of the former workers at the Alpha Portland Cement Company plant have experienced severe health issues from breathing in airborne asbestos. Still, I enjoyed checking this place out! If you guys liked this video, make sure to stay tuned for more exploration videos all across New England!

    You should explore the areas around the Minuteman Bikeway! While the bikeway itself isn’t abandoned whatsoever, theres loads of weird stuff thats just outside of it.

      Damn, you’re right! I didn’t know about that place, that looks cool! I also missed Skytop Quarry while I was up there, which I regret…

    Lifelong Jamesville resident, a lot of my family worked there. Just a few things…
    Unless you have permission you are trespassing. The area is patrolled by police regularly.
    The buildings are not safe and the Jamesville Fire Dept has had to recuse “explorers” several times.
    The buildings are covered with asbestos. It’s everywhere up there. You can find lawsuit after lawsuit involving asbestosis, and mesothelioma from this plant. When you go through those buildings you are exposing yourself to asbestos.
    Finally, your information is quite a bit off.

    Really appreciate for the response for my last comment! I did take a ride down today to see if I could check the place out, but it seemed like the only way to get to the factory is to drive through the fence gates at Ogle Rd. I ended up turning back because it seemed like it had trespass warning signs, but did you just drive down the road or did you handle the parking somewhere else?

    • @j-mass
      @j-mass  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I actually parked elsewhere and then walked over myself. There’s public parking nearby at Fiddlers Green Park; I just parked my car there and then it was just a very short walk over.

    That giant open area looks like the remains of aperture labs straight out of portal 2. Also insane how people make graffiti that high up like with those eyes at 31:05

    @Arcvx Před 2 měsíci

    lol I literally moved to Syracuse for work around 3 months ago and I’ve been looking for abandoned places to explore. This is really cool! I did read a lot of year old articles about police patrolling the area though. Was that an issue for you?

    • @j-mass
      @j-mass  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks so much! Honestly, I didn’t encounter any. I was there by myself for roughly 2 hours and didn’t come across anyone at all the whole time. Still, be sure to exercise caution if you do decide to go!
