Outside the city of Syracuse, in the town of Camillus, New York, sits the remnants of a limestone quarry, once a staple of the region's mining industry during the 19th and early 20th century. This quarry, known as Split Rock Quarry, was first opened in 1834 by Gilbert Coons. By the 1880s, the mining operations expanded to produce sodium carbonate via the Solvay process, developed in nearby Solvay, New York. While the quarry would mine and distribute limestone for several decades, operations eventually came to an end as Split Rock Quarry officially closed in 1912. Following the outbreak of World War I, the quarry's property would reopen for use, this time as a munitions factory, headed by the Semet-Solvay Company, in 1915. This factory produced nearly a quarter of all United States-produced TNT during the war, and stored millions of tons of explosives on site. This would unfortunately result in tragedy: on July 2nd, 1918, following a large fire, between 1 to 3 tons of TNT exploded, killing 50 men on impact. This deadly disaster would mark an unfortunate stain on the company, and the munitions factory would close down just a few years later.
Today, the entirety of Split Rock Quarry and its premises are open to the public to enjoy, left behind for nature to reclaim. While many of the buildings, and structures of both the quarry and munitions factory have long since been demolished and razed, there are quite a few remnants of this fascinating history left behind. The property is characterized by rocky cliff faces and limestone outcrops, symbolizing the peak era of the quarry's past. Perhaps the most interesting and iconic remnants left behind is the massive stone crusher and its tunnel system behind it; this stone crusher was once used to pulverize limestone into a powdery debris. Today, the massive stone structure sits abandoned and unused, with a series of narrow, graffiti-tagged tunnels encircling it. The property of Split Rock Quarry itself is quite beautiful, and climbing up unto the limestone rock faces offers a stunning view of the surrounding areas. Truly a unique abandoned site to explore here in Upstate New York, and I greatly enjoyed my time here! That is insanely dope! I had to watch it again. I love how old school your videos are. Drone shots are so corny. The patented JMass "can you still me?" shot where you get further and further away from the camera is so genius. It engages the audience. When people do those following drone shots it's weird as if the robot is the one watching the video instead of me. Excellent work!

Hello, I live in Camillus and the Crusher is a destination place for hikers, and cyclists from all over. I was there just this morning. If you have any questions about the crusher feel free to reach out. I know many parts of the history, other uses it’s been used for. Especially the explosion.i hope you reach out
