- Governor Gavin Newsom sent a major message to the NCAA when he signed into law California's 'Fair Pay to Play Act' (SB206) last Friday September 27th on the set of HBO's The Shop, giving college athletes the ability to responsibly and fairly be paid for use of their name and likeness in the state of California. The governor of California sat down with LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Rich Paul, Diana Taurasi, Ed O'Bannon, and Katelyn Ohashi on the set of The Shop to discuss the importance of the new law and the impact that it will have on college athletes not only in California, but across the entire country.

Our generation ( Im 37 y/o) has not really appreciated what our fathers/mothers and grandfathers/ mothers did for us back in their day to fight for civil rights and justice... but now because of their work back then we no longer have to sit in the back of a bus, drink from different water fountains, and can even (as an African American) be the president of the United States.

*This law if passed nationwide will benefit larger colleges who can afford to pay athletes, with mid-majors, private* *schools and small State I/II/III schools having to cancel entire sports programs. Those schools dropping their athletic* *programs means far fewer venues for athletes to showcase their talents. This means underprivileged athletes*
*not able to attend major schools, will be denied education and professional sports oppourtunities. Sometimes, "feel-good"* *ideas that make good sound bites, are the worst ones.*

Besides, in the scenario just signed by the governor, the schools aren't paying the kids, the kids are just allowed to find opportunities for outside income. Pretty sure the colleges are still only allowed to provide benefits in the way of scholarships, and things that they already allow.
No, the programs at schools of smaller up to mid-major size, will not have budgets big enough to compete with the larger mega-schools to keep their athletic departments open. So, recruitment slots for the schools that *can* pay, will be even more scarce. A lot of great athletes who would be able to attend and showcase their talents at a Fullerton or Gonzaga, will now not have those opportunities available to them. Newsom is an SJW stuffed shirt who understands nothing about sports economics, the collegiate sport system, and probably his only sports experience is playing for his fraternity intramural beer league football team. I see communities of color cheering this development, but they're too shortsided and self-motivated to see the ultimate effects and result of it. I already have neighbors/family members with athletic pending tentative scholarship offers from non-major schools, who have received letters from those schools in anticipation of this moronic CA law, advising them that their scholarship may be terminated mid-stream, if the school can no longer afford to pay them. And that's just the beginning. Athletes in Jr. High/HS right now, will be even more screwed.
Wow Rich made a great point. College is the very entity that should be Educating students on how to handle their careers in the real world but has not given student athletes the opportunity to learn how profit off of their own brand and likeness.

This is awesome! I have to give props to Lebron, the governor and his whole crew. This was calculated, just like most successful movements. This move speaks to a bigger issue. Congress didn’t push this agenda but it was “the state” and "the people"! This has been talked about for years and the governor of California seized the moment. No “Big Bad Wolf” in DC stopped it nor did a “Benevolent” congressman spearhead it. The ones it effected the most, athletes, took it upon themselves to make it happen. That’s what I love about it.

To those who compromised under the current crooked system and were pinched may you be forgiven and accepted back to your programs. Bring back ncaa football for the fans now!
