DEAD BAIT: HOOK MORE PIKE WITH THE SKATING HOOK RELEASE RIG

  • Especially when dead baiting for pike with large baitfish, it can be difficult to hook the pike with normal dead bait rigs. Some of the reasons are inferior hook exposure and the pike locking its jaws around the bait, so you cant move the hook without having to pull the hooks out of the bait. In order to get around these challenges Jens Bursell has developed The Skating Hook Release Rig - that gives better hook exposure, full reversible moving hook effect - and consequently a much easier penetration of the hooks. In this video Jens explains about the rig and shows you how to use it for dead baiting in your pike fishing. And - we wont cheat you for some of his many big pike caught on this revolutionary new rigging system.

Jens, I was given your book as a gift by my nephew Jason, he was responsible for getting me into fishing and is always very encouraging...
I was out deadbaiting a couple of days ago and lost 2 fish to "dropped runs" , the runs were full-blooded but I didn't hook them... striking into "fresh air" despite taking my time 😕 (I didn't want to deep-hook them either )
At home, dejected & disappointed, I cracked open a beer and the Bible (your book🤓) and had a look at those "fancy rigs that I'll never need" ...
Out again today, I tried a simplified (hack) version of the skating rig just using some bait elastic and I had 2 proper hook-ups, if only on small fish.
The idea of a single exposed hook as opposed to two less exposed hooks is a total lightbulb-in-the-head moment !! Brilliant !! 👏
I want to thank you for your thorough research and development of these rigs and I will endeavour to build the proper version.
I presently use a baitboat to gently drop my baits (plus some chopped up fish bits) as I need to get out beyond casting range on the very pressured waters I fish... so no need for a casting clip..
Thank you also for a wonderful book, the stunning photos are only rivalled by the in-depth knowledge and a lifetimes experience generously shared by you with us mere mortals...
My own PB is 28lbs and at 65y.o. I hope to have the time to someday see a thirty... 🤔🙏

Nice approach Jens, normally I just hook the 2 branches in the baitfish, leaving the last tripple vertical as well.

@fiskfri what about casting distance with it does the loop not pull through the bait on the cast?
I like big baits amego I tend to make a trace with 1 Single and 2 Treble hooks the single goes in the root or head of bait so all the force is anchored to a bone in the bait. The Trebles are just nicked into the skin of the bait they rip out on the strike into the mouth of the Pike.
Then there's different ways to rig up livebaits of size

@@DavidScobie depends on which loop you choose - i find casting very
long with fx PVA strips as loop

@fiskfri I've got those pva cable ties they are good even in cold water they still dissolve. When I used casting clips I just ended up tieing a 5 inch loop of mono and using that to the casting clip.
I like the original idea buddy but the only drawback I can see is not getting the distance from a cast I do use things like bait boats to drop bigger baits into position.

@@DavidScobie Hi - if you want more distance, use a broader casting-loop - fx made of a plastic strip 2-3 mm wide. Remember to have it around the spine of the baitfish - and around the trace, so plastic not lost in water

Save all the messing around it would be easier to push the swivel end of the trace through the tail so the fish hangs tail first from the trace then pull down and push the hooks in and connect to the line. That way the fish won't come off when casting or reeling in.

You are better shedding the deadbait in order to set the hooks... why would you want your deadbait back ? 🤔

My thought: this way the casting acceleration combined with angle of pull would tend to dig the hooks dwon in the flesh - making a moving hook effect impossible -
