Bass tone is absolutely perfect
Joe Chapman been playing bass for over 20 years. That’s the tone (slightly overdriven P) that made me want to play bass in the first place. The way it makes my ribcage vibrate...
@@hedekbass me too. been playing about 3 years myself and it was all thanks to pixies (kim deal). nothing beats a perfectly set up p bass
Not on this video!! Hahahahaha... best P Bass tone: Catch in the Cradle” Harry Chappin, and Daffy’s Dance” By Headhunters.... the ultimate p bass tone...
Joachim Peiper thanks. To each their own. Your suggestions are the classic low treble slightly muffled Motown P bass sound. I love it but not my favorite. Not as much as this one here.
its fine but it does lack a lot of the lower ressonance you would normally expect in a good bass tone, sounds ok in the mix though
After all these years - still one of the coolest bands ever.....

I LOVE that they changed the song from the recorded version (they play it like this live for years now). On the album the lyrics start right in. This extended intro really adds to the mood of the song.
Great song from a great band.
I like this guy!👆

Well said!!
That intro was the perfect addition to blow the dust off of such a sonic masterpiece.

I rang up Frank Black at work yesterday. I was completely starstruck. He came to the register and I couldn't stop looking up and staring at him and he finally asked me "Is everything OK?" And I ask "Is your name Frank?" And he replies "Yes" and I started to fanboy. He was very kind and humble. Such a surreal moment for me that I won't soon forget.
His name is actually Charles aka black Francis aka Frank Black
@@Matt-vx1wt I know that now, however i'm happy he responded to it. The whole situation was very surreal and he was very kind. I told him he made my day and I could tell he was humbled by that.
Nope, i live in Massachusetts.
I work at an Olympia Sports sporting goods store. I actually watched him walk in from where I was at the register and thought to myself "Gee, that guy looks a lot like Frank Black" but I convinced myself it couldn't be him. Well he eventually came to the register with some clothes and was standing in front of me and my heart starts racing because i'm almost positive it's him but i'm trying to do my job as well and trying to take the security tags off his clothes but i'm shaking and dropping stuff because it's Frank Black for Christ's sake and I keep looking up and staring and that's when he asked "Is everything alright?" Lol and then I asked "Is your name Frank?" and so on. After telling him I was a big fan and had Surfer Rosa in my car he goes "well today i'm just a fat guy buying yoga clothes!" Lmao not even kidding. I was on cloud nine for like five hours afterwards because of how surreal the whole thing was.
Happy for you man
I have been watching this band perform this song for 30 years now and the last couple of years it has become an almost religious experience. It has transcended everything it has ever been before and ascended to a plane of pure sonic joy for me that nothing else has even come close to. I'd say that in its current incarnation, the live version has achieved perfection, but that doesn't do it justice. It's perfect, but it's perfect even for a Pixies song. There is simply nothing to compare to the experience of standing in the middle of a dance floor in a crowded auditorium, eyes closed, gently swaying to the calm-before-the-storm bass groove, knowing that with each controlled-chaos verse, hell is going to break a little more loose. By the time we get to "break the walls and kill us all", I am screaming the words back at Charles Thompson with the understanding that though he wrote them, I am feeling them, because that is his will. This song, and the way it is played today, stands as one of the greatest rock and roll achievements of my lifetime.
That has to be one of the best reviews I have ever read.
@@andychilcott7245 haha thanks! Reading it today, I was almost certainly pretty stoned when I wrote it, so I'm sure that's part of how I was feeling at the time, but I stand by these words today. Every time I see a Pixies show, either live or on CZcams, this song is often the highlight.
But Kim
Give over, it's just pop music 😂😂😂
I went to their concert, then had to take a big dump

That Dave Lovering is a first class drummer, no beats were skipped!
And proof that you can play aggressive music holding the sticks with a traditional grip. Lovering has always been a machine.
2:20?
@@ranewardwell Indeed. There are many deaf mothers here that would say that music jump in 2:20 was made by the band on purpose.
I don't mean this in a disrespectful way - but I'm a novice drummer that plays a lot of Pixies songs for fun. They aren't very technically demanding as far as drums go.

Santiago makes lead guitar magic. His style is incredible
He's a very good guitarist but is lifeless
@Darren Harper Is this sarcasm or just trolling?...his guitar playing and sound is very unique it's such a big factor in the pixies sound...personally the thing i respect the most about his playing is his ability to hold back and not over do things that allows the bass and vocals to cut through and gives the songs a special dynamic, sometimes less is really more.
just stop haters..J Santiago is style... he is the personification of style. No one has ever or will ever play like him when you hear Pixies you hear JS. thank god for that

Loverring. Science man.
Extend the extended intro
In the 90's, I was lucky to see Frank Black in concert in Paris. I'm 55 and still love Pixies.
I’m 45 and my 14yr old must have discovered them on his own online somewhere because he was studying with his headphones on humming “number 13’ I asked what he was listening to and he said “this band I found. The Pixies, You would like them, kinda a violent femmes meets Jane’s Addiction .” I honestly was overwhelmed with emotions out of nowhere. It was like looking at myself at that age, lost, angst filled, trying to connect to something, anything that made me feel seen, heard, understood, anything just to not feel so all alone. I remembered my mom telling me my music was trash and throwing out my tapes. I saw the Hope in his eyes and the excitement of introducing me to one of my favorite bands back when I was his age.
So I didn’t ruin it for him. I let him play the entire Doolittle album and afterwards told him it was the coolest album ever and thanks for sharing it with me.
It was a beautifully touching moment and I have the pixies to thank for it! ❤
This why the bass guitar is such an important part of a bands sound
I think this too... The Begin the music with Bass. I love It. Introduccion with Bass.
Paz is a hell of a musician , she was good in A Perfect Circle and now shes shredding with the Pixies...

Listening to this in an office with headphones on and I still take a deep breath just before "Missy aggravation" like I'm going to scream along. Very very few bands make me feel the way the Pixies do. I want to yell at people who don't know them and love them that they are missing out on something incredible. This is an awesome version too.
I would like to see a video of you yelling at people who don't appreciate the Pixies. It would trend.
What you should do is just unplug these earphones, turn on the volume nice and loud and let the office co-workers in on some REAL genuine good music...
Dude I do the same thing, when I’m alone and can’t scream I’ll silently scream it with every fraction of my soul

Over the years this band has risen in my esteem from one of the best American bands of their era, to one of the greatest bands of all time.
I think a strong appreciation of their '90s material is essential in coming to that conclusion, which is something that sadly far too many Pixies fans lack. Those are the albums that raise the Pixies from a band that can hang with (and often better) the best Rock n Roll and Punk bands to a band that can hang with the best "serious" pop and art bands (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, as well as stuff they inspired themselves like Radiohead and Arcade Fire). To be a band that can rock so hard AND play such beautiful things is basically unprecedented, and the result is an extremely important catalog of amazing sonic depth.
@@VeritableSmorgasbord While I love the first 2 albums, especially Doolittle, as well as Come On Pilgrim, for me it's Bossanova and Trompe le Monde that put them over the top.

This is one of the best versions of one of the best Pixies songs. Come here to revisit often and always hit repeat at least once. Always thought 'without Kim, it ain't the Pixies', but this track convinced me that Paz Lenchantin is a fitting successor to the great Kim Deal.

@Saint Cocaine this is just unwarranted, jeez man chill
@Saint Cocaine Good luck in your wallowing in your ignorant, shallow, poser life. The guy was giving out a little advice. He wasn't trashing new music. It doesn't hurt to learn a little from people that have been there before.
@Saint Cocaine How about you grow some hair on your balls and listen to something that fuckin' moves ya. Nothing is original, Opie- everything has an influence. And you're right, it is about rebelling against the norm. But somehow, gettin' out there and fighting "the man" just isn't the same until you actually get out from your parents basement.
Come talk to me when you actually get it, you little pissant.
Thats the bloody secret, bring it up take it down, keep it satisfying but interesting
