#JohnnyMarr #FeverDreams - Hudba
This song is literally 40 years old now, but every time I hear it I *still* get goosebumps as if it the first time - it just never gets old.
No other guitarist like Johnny Marr. His innovation, style, technique, they stand alone. No flash, no trash. All substance, all brilliance.
Well said!
Oooh, I'm not too sure about that - Marr is a god but if you want style, innovation, tekkers, Manchester and hair then check out Vini Reilly's work.
@@vintagegibbon Thanks! I never heard of him and his band until now :)
excellent reply@@vintagegibbon
Only one Johnny Marr
One of those songs you don’t want to end.
Exactly
It's a good thing it 6:47 long 😜
Yeah, I wish he'd keep going until we get to the end of the song instead of having to listen to self-indulgent guitar riffs. How soon is now? I guess we'll never know...
Fact
Agreed 💯
Clearly Johnny’s masterpiece. I’m 60yo and still get lost in this song.
This version is the best I've ever heard.
Period.
And full stop.
Nailed 🎉
I agree.. it sounds the best. But if you notice, the tempo is slightly slower. Which, I am undecided if I like it slower or not
Oh, so this is the first time you've ever heard it
Can we just talk about the tone and pocket on that bass for a minute? Silky funk.
The bass on this song is so underappreciated. Really drives.
We can talk about it for the next 40 years if you want, mate. It's that good.
Yep
Here to talk bout dat phunky-ass bass line grooving in that pocket!❤
Bad ass Fender Bass and Fender Bassman Amp. Killer.
The part where he changes the note with tuning peg is fucking badass. Johnny Marr is a legend.
truly badass. I could listen to that on loop for hours.
Lol, you clearly don't know much about guitar. A 5 year old could play this
@@stanleymasterson1135 you are right - I play it all day long too on my 77 Strat. Fun stuff.
@@JunkYour925 Great song though
@@stanleymasterson1135 Been playing for 30 years. Nothing wrong with simplicity. There is a reason I despise stuff like Yngwie Malmsteem, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dream Theatre. Its all wanky pretentious garbage.
Bass player is getting savage tone and is completely dialed in. All of this is great.
Totally. Hats off to the sound engineer.
ya the bass sounds nice.. And he looks better today than 10 yrs ago... too.
This blew me away. Can't believe it sounded this good live. CZcams occasionally recommends a masterpiece and this was one!
Like the first tab of extasy.
Totally agree, this is simply amazing music
No two ways about it. This is an absolutely superb rendition of this all-time classic. The lads really nailed it here.
Except Morrissey isn't singing.
@@rwm4738 get over it!
@@rwm4738 Sure, Johnny ain't Morrissey, however, he does a great job singing lead vocal!!!
@@stephennoble2647 He had a lot of help on the vocals
As a former musician and part time home recording mixer/music producer I have to admit this was one hell of a live mix and a FANTASTIC performance! Timing and tones from the vocals and instruments were impeccable!!
Was thinking the very same thing
And you remain oblivious to the fact that this was post processed. If you knew anything about recording, you would know that the layout would've sounded shite.
i was about to say the same thing. this mix makes justice to this live take of this classic tune. (Mr. Marr´s guitar job still is amazing, few songs have such charactecistic sound)
It all started from a Bo Diddley riff. Marr told the story in an interview. Still wild.
@@AdaptivePhenix Well, at least you were kind in your thoughts.
Johnny is a master of chords and texture. He’s a different type of Guitar Hero.
Yep!
Legend
Great comment
@@norrieherd1293 THANKS
so true
Not only does this sound absolutely fantastic, but Johnny's voice seems to just keep getting better and better, it's truly amazing to hear how much he has grown into owning this song with his own vocal stylings.
Better than Morrisey would have been, no doubt!
I’m so late to this party. I’ve always heard what a genius Johnny is but as a casual fan I’m going to turn to a die hard today! Truly better than the original.
He’s great, but I did hear vocal pitch correction in this performance.
@@christophernoia5197 I thought that too, but it might just be the way he sings that part.. perhaps he did backing vocals in that style? Could just be sneaky auto tune though!
@@JohnnyBuxton totally could be that. I've experienced that before when recording vocals for a song. There was one line that sounded as if I used pitch correction when I didn't because of how I sang it.
One of my favourite songs I am blind and I love to play this on guitar
Put it on CZcams sir!
good on you keep going my friend 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had no idea that Johnny Marr could as well sing. He honors the electric guitar, how can I put it? He plays it with the subtlety of a cello player, every ostinato, every chord, every rhythm in place for a particular musical reason. A great musician.
That’s a fantastic description. I’ll freely admit I play guitar the way I do because I idolized Edward Van Halen. Johnny’s minimalist approach is just beautiful sounding.
Well said! (You must be a guitar player) He’s a “Guitar Hero” of a different nature. Definitely not cliché.
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr I too idolized Eddie, we all drunk the coolaid and it was good. However, once I lost my “shallowness” I started to listening to Andy Summers (The Police), Paul Reynolds (Flock of Seagulls) and this guy, Marr and noticed those guys play for color/texture “chords” and not speed. That’s the route I took.
@@shawnstarks1743 it’s amazing how much modern music is influenced by Summers, Reynolds (criminally underrated) and Marr. I play at church and every single song has those texture chords with delay.
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr Dude, that’s really the wheelhouse of the type of guitar player I want to be. YOU. A church musician. Every time I go to a Guitar Store and I here some guy playing Beautiful stuff. I immediately go over and ask them where they play at? Always the same answer. CHURCH
Why did it take me 2 years to find this vid?!?! This is by far the best live version of How Soon Is Now I've ever heard. Johnny is a freakin beast.
He's not a better singer than Morrisey, you are high
@EpsteinsRope I don't do drugs so Im not high but everyone is entitled to their opinion. And mine is that this is definitely the better version of this track LIVE....keyword live. And I'm speaking of the entire song ensemble not just the vocals.
Wrong opinion@@in_10z
Wow. That second guitarist absolutely NAILED the original sound of that haunting slide sound. The way it decays after is just like the original recording. To me that one bit is what makes or breaks any cover of this song. Best live version ever!
I agree, but there is one thing : it's not a cover. It is his own song
Totally agree. It always bugged me when it wasn't nailed on certain live versions. It makes such a difference when it's done this way, as you say, like the original recording. THis guy's version is so good too, check it out....
czcams.com/video/SeE4mjS1BKM/video.html
Subtlety is the key. The slide guitar upsurges, but never overpowers.
agreed, he (Doviak) is great
@@notordinarynothing that he is!
I actually didn't think it was possible to recreate the sounds live and gave up on hearing a decent live version of this song, but this is really good. This is the best live version of this song ever performed .

This song legit gives me goosebumps. Its like he's speaking for all of us who are afraid to say it
I literally could listen to this song every day until I die. That timeless riff, the iconic hook, perfection.
Hi, i am from Russia and I got to know Johnny Marr' music earlier than Smiths' and Morrissey's one. I adore this song!!!
Same, one of the best ever. Johnny owns it when he performs it.
I DO :)

Ah yes! The wailing sound is just amazing
Special kudos to the sound engineer(s) ...... this is so clean! This ancient hippy likes, nice job to all involved (you too Johnny, lol).
It is auto-tuned as well.

Never heard Johnny sing before but he does this song really well. A lot of the Brits have that same kinda tone and drone. Sounds great
I’m 50 and can’t believe I’ve not heard this version before now?! Outstanding!
Bassist and Drummer deserve kudos here for laying down a fat groove that makes this even more special,
and I think many here don't even realize it's why it sounds so good!.
It takes a better ear than mine to notice on my own over those magical guitars and Johnny's shockingly good vocals.
Indeed, for a drummer it's a rare gift to shine so well technically but still give your band space to shine.
Was noticing just that…super smooth very hypnotic bassist! Drummer, the entire ensemble! Better than the original recording by far!
Are you a bassist too ?
- that's the way it should be, the bass player & drummer tight as f**k..you don't really notice them standing out, all eyes/ears on the guitarness & vocals..but would you ever notice if they WEREN'T there....
As a Drummer, I commend you you on your fantastic observation and realizing the groove…you are a musician for sure.
This song never gets old. Johnny’s voice may not have the extension of Morrisey but it’s definitely not lacking in expression here. And as always his guitar does a lot of the speaking.
To be fair i had no idea who he was before thiis video. .mmhe smashed it
It’s a lot better than Peter Hook trying to sing New Order songs.
@@robanderson1155 as he should, it’s HIS song after all… and he’s only had 40 years of playing it to get it perfect 😝

Johnny Marr...is The Smiths...
At least it's nice to know I can hear an excellent live performance of a Smiths song without having to deal with the lorry-load of baggage that comes with their former singer.
Johnny is the ultimate rock star. I can't imagine him doing anything else. He's purpose built for the job.
Really? I can see him working as a librarian.
Rock star😂😂😂
@@Frip36
Or 'counting cards' in a casino.
The Smiths breaking up was a sh i t thing though.
They were together much better than going on alone.
He does have a certain spirit of command
IMO he's better than a rock star because he has more professionalism, He delivers stellar performances, without any arrogance or drunken antics like a :rock star" from that era might include.
As a lifetime rock and metal fan, this is absolutely wonderful. I just wish modern pop was art like this. Much respect to the understated national treasure that is Mr Marr.
I was about 16 when this came out. I was so lucky, I am from Manchester and I saw 3 of the greatest rhythm guitarists live:, in Manchester: Johnny Marr, James Hetfield and Bob Mould. Great days.
I fucking LOVE this version. Infact, more than the original! Johnny has a great voice and his guitar additions are magnetic. Go Johnny, GO! Ultra cool😅
Yes amazing lovely and kind of perfectly played so love this too❤
This just sounds right. I’ve seen Moz play this live a few times and though he still has the greatest voice, it just doesn’t sound right; none of the Smiths songs really do, without this freaking genius playing the geetar
It was Noel who said in an interview that when a producer would say - "can you play it like Johnny Marr" - he'd answer, (paraphrasing) "if you want that you'd better get Johhny F'in Marr because he's the only one that can do it".
@@blueodum then the producer answers back "then I'll get Graham Coxon, he will make a decent Johnny Marr's impression for your song!" 🤣
Me too. Morrisey’s show was too much like Vegas, baby.
Never got in to Morrisey's solo stuff. It took me a while to realize that Johnny was just as important for the Smiths' unique sound.
This song never ages! Almost 40 years old and sounds so fresh!
I wonder if Mr.Marr has heard Built to Spill's glorious version?
Such an unsung, amazing guitar hero outside of his fans. An absolutely true genius musician. His guitar layering and production skills are brilliant. But I'd have to say what impresses me most here is his vocals. They've gotten SO MUCH better. Really impressive. I used to kind of cringe when he'd sing (and I LOVE Johnny Marr). But his vocals are genuinely great here. But no one will ever be able to top Morrissey's vocals. As it should be. Still so sad about the loss of Andy Rourke. Another exceptional musician whose contribution could never be exaggerated.
Soundtrack of the 80's....Some of the most beautiful and striking guitar riffs were created by this guy. "What difference Does It Make" is a masterpice," Hand in Glove', "Bigmouth Strikes Again", and so many others. Jhonny is An Icon of that era.
Johnny's guitar playing is absolute magic and so hard to copy. I was impressed with the vocals on this recording - even some vibrato in there. Love it.
What's amazing is... he doesn't have to show off like a circus performer... no tapping, dive-bomb whammy bar, arpeggio...... I love Love LOVE this song the very first time I listened to it when it was released several decades ago!
Taking nothing away from Johnny Marr, but that bass ...
You can hear how this track laid the groundwork for all the Madchester stuff that was to come. Stone Roses, The Mondays, all of it. Awesome 🎉
omg yeah. loads of students ended up in salford uni because it was morrisey's stomping grounds
This sound is exceptional, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve listened to this.
I know this song is my favourite song of all time I remember getting this album for my birthday I was hooked from the start this song this particular song really resonates with me even to this day . I like Morrissey .. but Johnny made up a huge part of the smiths . I was just scrolling a few minutes ago on CZcams and found this . I’ve listened to this for the 4 th time now . This song is tight . Johnny is a genius . Great energy
This was actually better than the album version and Johnny's voice was on point!

I can’t stop listening to this. What a masterpiece. Johnny’s voice is priceless.
So is his Fender Jaguar🎸
In the days of vinyl, the cry was "I CAN'T GET THIS OFF MY TURNTABLE!"

Singer no, of course guitarist and writer. But doesn't have the presence of Morrissey at all.
Been look for this song for awhile. I heard a part of it as bumper music on a radio talk show and it really made an impression. This song takes me back to a dim-distant memory of my high school days, late at night, lit up by car headlights and tail lights in a place lost to memory. I was not all there, wasted on what ever weed was available and needing to find my way home. I graduated from High School in the mid 1980’s. Another time and another day a long long time ago. Thank you for posting this and ending yet another musical mystery.
Marr would have played this thousands of times, but he (and the band) just nail it.
Johnny Marr is/was/always will be the soul of The Smiths. He is unmatched still to this day.
Damn right! You said it best!
Lol. Why has all his music sucked since then. No mozza. The true soul of the smiths. His voice is dreadful

HOW SOON IS NOW BY THE SMITHS:
How soon is now is definitely one of the most hypnotic songs I’ve ever listened too! I remember dancing to this song at prom and just being in my own headspace even though I was dancing with my prom date! She loved it too!
The soundtrack for a generation beaten down by rain, cobbled streets and broken hearts.
That’s probably the best vocal performance Johnny has done of this song.
I realize how absurd this sounds, but they have gotten a lot better at playing this song, at least in a way I hear as being more faithful to the original yet still their own. The original is so damn perfect, it’s hard to come close. But they have nailed it now! Superb playing from the whole band.
I completely agree. Bassist in particular.
@@thruper yeah those bass lines tight. What an epic performance

The bassist is incredibly tight as well. It's such a driving yet relaxed groove.
This song will still be styling in another 40 years, and another 40...
How does he do it even better than Morrissey?? He should've been front man of The Smiths. Who knew early 80's he was so talented?!! Just brilliant.
Did Morrissey sing this?( as in genuine question )
@brendonferris5637 This is a Smiths song from 80s. Morrissey was lead singer and Johnny played the amazing guitar riff. Didn't know back then Johnny could sing!
It's not sung better than Morrissey. Guitars sound great though.
How many guitarists, in the modern age, can pull off a Bo Diddley rhythm and make it sound this cool? And how does he just keep getting better vocally?
A musical genius that I listen to since 1984 . It was very hard to find The Smiths's records in France at this time.
This is the SOUND of pure ROCK & ROLL ...simple yet complex and rebelious wreckless & young...great preformance at the magnitude of this single ...one of the greatest tunes ever produced and recorded outright from the 80s and leaves all other singles flopped ! Wow ! Johnny Marr totally NAILS ALL ITS AVENUES OF ROCK VIRTUOSO!
Wow!! That is so tight and clean. Johnny’s vocals are perfection. The balance, the mix; everything just gels.
Let's hear it for the musicianship of the band! The rhythm guitarist! The delectable bassist and drummer! What an amazingly mixed song (props to engineering!)
He's the man. His guitar is pure elegance and good taste. Effortlessly awesome.
Johnny Marr. I never knew how good he was until I heard this and it sent me down a rabbit hole.
Best version ive seen of this song, right from the guitar tones of the opening riff and the haunting guitar slides, plus johnnys vocals are killer, what a legend 👏👏

Man. That's fantastic stuff. Marr is a compositional genius and his vocals do that song equal justice to Mr. Morrissey.
Yea it’s hard to sing and play certain notes
Johnny's really nailed that vocal, doubtless drawing inspiration from the Astley original. But could he sing Never Gonna Give You Up as well as Rick?
I just had to look if this was a joke, but Astley really did it 😂 thanks for turning me to that direction!
your obviously not aware of this but Rick used to be the singer in Johnny's former band the Smiths and Never Gonna Give You Up was the Smiths most classic song
I went to the Astley/Blossoms gig in Manchester. It was unbelievably good. If the smiths ever reform, I would prefer they did it with Astley in all honesty 😂🤣
Johnny Marr is by far one of the most brilliant guitarists of the last 50 years without a doubt
The fact I didn’t know this was originally on guitar surprised me I thought it was an underground track but the guitars really sums up the song

I was literally front stage when he performed this whilst supporting The Stone Roses at Finsbury Park it blew my mind, I'd seen The Smiths twice in 83 or 84 they were my band at that time 🎶🎵🎶❤️
Johnny is a very special talent indeed - I must admit the other musicians on this session are absolutely fantastic - the driving beats from the drums and base are beautifully balanced with a great iconic guitar reverb that transforms this song into a masterpiece.
The guitar work on this song still gives me chills, and it's still one of my favorite songs. Johnny's vocals give it a different feel, and I felt like I was rediscovering it again
Everything sounds fantastic!
