I don't think he was underrated. Rather he was so iconic with Apollo Creed that it was difficult to remove him from that role. Even in Mandalorian many wouldn't say "Oh look, it's Carl Weathers!" but rather say "Oh look! It's Apollo Creed!"

Not to take anything away from Stallone, but when you see the two running side by side, in slo-mo, along the beach, you see who the real athlete was.

Carl Weathers is really amazing in III. The anger, the disappointment, the sadness at what his great rival has become and what that might say about him. He's putting it all in his performance
To be fair, Rocky goes from being a complete past-his-prime nobody in Rocky to having 10 title defenses after beating Apollo at the start of Rocky III. By and large, he's known as a dominant champion, which is more notable since Rocky's time at the top only really started after he turned 30.
@@AirLancerThe downside is that those 10 challengers were pre-chosen by both Mickey and the boxing commission. It devastated Rocky to learn his trainer was holding his hand the whole time despite how good intentioned Mickey was, leading to going soft and issues of self-worth after Clubber beat Rocky.

Celebrity deaths don’t bother me much, but hearing Carl Weathers dying just got to me. He went from antagonist (IMO best of Rocky/Creed series) to his best friend. And that “there is no tomorrow” line. It just hits me hard bc whenever I don’t feel like doing something or just putting it off I think of Apollo yelling at me. Rest In Power Carl Weathers.

Child hood hero and absolute beast! Stallone is Rocky but without Creed would have been nothing. Rest Easy Big Guy.
What I loved about the Apollo Creed character was that he was a total machine and as hard as nails, but he was also a decent human being with a strong moral centre, and yes, a lot of that was the writing, but Carl's performance was the thing that made it work. The relationship between Rocky and Apollo was brilliant, they found redemption in each other. It's one of the reasons the Rocky films were so successful. RIP Carl Weathers.
They begin in the classic protagonist / antagonist roles during the first two films but conclude as good and needed friends during the next two films - a wonderful character arc for both that helped make this a great series.

Weathers ... so charismatic that the switch from antagonist to mentor was entirely believable. I cannot imagine anyone else filling that role and doing even half a job Carl did.
