- Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you're new here, my name's Rachel and I'm a huge Eurovision fan, as well as a musician, In today's video, I reacted to and reviewed for the first time, to Poland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
After a couple of year's of poor results, it's Poland's time to turn things around. They have had a habit of sending decent songs, but which lack a sense of competitiveness. Tulia is a good example - their song was great, but on stage it lacked a drive to score highly. Rafal had a decent song last year, but was performed mediocre with struggling vocals. However, this year, it looks like Poland's luck is about to change, with 'River'
'River' opens with a melancholic piano line which beautifully accompanies and highlights Ochman's vocals. A great exploration of timbre through strings and background noises creates a heightened sonic experience. And then suddenly, the song changes direction and introduces a drum and bass, with pulsating rhythms, driving the song forwards into new territory. It really works.
Melodically and harmonically, the song explores modes and plays with mixing major and minor chords to create a bittersweet song but maintains a tension. It's well crafted and demonstrated sophisticated song writing. The lyrics explore a damaged relationship with power, which is conveyed beautifully in Ochman's pleading vocals and swoops to a falsetto register.
Overall, Poland may be on to a top ten result with this, or even a winner, provided it is staged well in Turin. We need it to be less static, and woken up with potentially a light show or an LED featuring water to echo the song's title. Placing all of the musical elements together, I believe the score I have assessed it is fair.

Krystian Ochman was born and raised near Washington in the United States.
Although the winner of "The Voice of Poland 11" grew up in the US, his family comes from Poland. The singer's parents left for North America during the communist era.
Krystian Ochman's grandfather is the world-famous opera singer, Wiesław Ochman. Born in 1937, the tenor has a great international career. The Pole has performed on the largest opera stages, incl. at La Scala in Milan, Metropolitan Opera in New York or Opera Garnier in Paris. For his services, he was awarded, inter alia, The Gold Medal for Merit to Culture - Gloria Artis, awarded to him in 2005 by the Minister of Culture, Waldemar Dąbrowski.
Krystian Ochman won the eleventh edition of "The Voice of Poland" in 2020. In the finale, the participant delighted viewers with his debut song "Światłocienie", which was considered by many to be one of the best singles in the history of "The Voice of Poland". The song went platinum.
After "The Voice of Poland", Krystian Ochman's career gained momentum. In November 2021, the singer released his debut album "Ochman". The album reached the 6th place of the best-selling publishers in Poland. The album includes, among others the songs "Great titles", "The Thieves of Imagination", "Prometheus" and the hit "Światłocienie".

I'm rooting for Poland this year. Firstly, because they deserve it with this song and secondly, because Poland have never won Eurovision before - and as soon as Måneskin won and I knew we were going to host it, I thought: "I want a first-time winner to take the trophy home this time!" I love your critique, Rachel, as always - the fact you talk about all the little technical details is always interesting. Opinions are fine and are meant to be subjective, of course, but I always appreciate when an opinion is informed and yours always are.

He wrote the lyrics and composed the music as well. It is a totally different choice from last year because finally the public decided who will represent us, last years the National Television decided for us 😆 Great review ❤ I still get goosebumps everytime I listen to this performance.

American English is his native tongue, so I think he can express himself better in English than Polish.

And I'm completely conflicted, cuz Albania has been a favorite for years! and Ronela is the perfect mix of great voice and a full ethnic bop! and Ochman gives me the same vibe as Poland 1994, which btw, she should have won that year...

I love Krystian Ochman from the first sight and hearing. Already after his first performance of the song "Beneath Your Beautiful" in The Voice of Poland, I said spontaneously "he sing like an angel!" And adding at the end, as it turned out the prophetic words: "this boy will win this program for sure! " I so much glad I hit the jackpot!❤️👍❤️
I love practically all of his songs, and now I will wholeheartedly cheer him on Eurovision ... Because if the people of all voting countries who listen to him really have any musical taste (and of course, if the entire competition is not arranged), then I sincerely hope bordering on certainty that our phenomenal Krystian with such a sensational track as "River" will take a place at least in the top three ... Even though I have some knowledge of harmony, I didn't know modes were used. We never looked into them in-depth at uni, so hearing you bring them up was a nice surprise. But this is a reason I tune into this channel all the time - I don't notice HALF as much as you do, and it's always nice to be reminded of what I studied.

I’ve checked my music notes and it’s actually Dorian mode (not Lydian) but I was close enough. It’s a hard spot ngl. Because I have perfect pitch it’s easy for me to pick up on those modes but sometimes I scramble up which one is which 🤣 you should check out the ‘mixolydian’ mode as that’s pretty cool

This song is a powerhouse, and amazing vocal performance from Kristian Ochman. I listened to it through the official music video first and I thought it may have been a bit overproduced. The rich arrangement combined with the rich, powerful voice felt overwhelming to me, but that could work given the song's themes of being immersed and carried away. I would be interested to see the arrangement pared back in volume a little to let his vocals shine.
I'm getting strong Baptist Christian repentence vibes, references to 'Down to the River I Pray' and some lines from Coldplay's 'Viva la Vida' ("just a puppet on a lonely string, oh who would want to ever be king?" vs "who'd wanna be a king pulling too many strings"). I'm certain this will be top 5, maybe even the winner !
I love the song and his voice, but I am waiting to see how they will package it for Eurovision. for me this staging and his expressiveness were both very lacking from this performance, but he was sick and it was just a national final performance, so hopefully they can put it all together in Turin

Song River is the best . So hypnotic. After one hearing I sing River with Krystian . Such a voice , captivating music , so rich and different . Clean and perfectly made
A beautiful voice, probably inherited from his famous grandfather Wiesław Ochman, an opera singer. Kristian is currently studying singing at the Academy of Music. Karol Szymanowski in Katowice.
So having now watched this reaction for an n-th time, I noticed a (more than likely unintentional) pun at 5:46 with your mention of the " *light and shadow* of the backing track", which is correlates to the title of the original song Ochman created for the final of Voice of Poland in 2020, called "Światłocienie" in Polish which can be translated to "Lights and Shadows" in English. (Also highly recommend listening to that song, or, the version with separate English lyrics called "Lights in the Dark".)
The song is great. If they improve the staging for Turin, I think this could make the top 5

Our Sara James (Junior Eurovision 2021) had her own performance on the same stage last Saturday,. You should see her only for one sound she made in the song “Toy” (the song of Netta from Israel - Eurovision 2018). She started to the song from Eurovision and next she sang the song "Toy". Krystian has well trained vocal at one of the Polish university. He grew up in the US and he came to Poland to study clasical singing. He took part in the Voice of Poland and won it. He cooperates with very good music producents. Besides, Krystian's grandfather is a well known opera singer. What's funny. During this performance on national selection he was ill.
