I don't know if you were gonna mention it regardless, but when you get to the Caution era you should probably mention the vocal comping to get more playback variety. Even though she'd done it before (like Subtle Invitation in 2010), I really noticed it happening more often in the Caution era. The tracks for Anytime You Need A Friend, I Don't Wanna Cry & We Belong Together might be the best examples for it. We Belong Together especially cuz the different tracks are comped together to make new ones often. Plus, it bleeds into her post-quarantine performances like with the O Holy Night "huhuhuhuhuhAAAuuuuu~" 2022 whistle is new vocals comped with the old playback she'd been using for it & also the 2024 Emotions bridge whistle is a newly recorded upwards run added onto the whistle she'd already been using since 2012 (lol..). I don't know if I explained that correctly, but it is really interesting.
I'm actually surprised how well they did the playback transitions for Beacon since they didn't even have newly recorded vocals for the most part, just pitched-down studio tracks. And yet they still somehow made it believable-2000s engineers should take notes fr.
25:02 - I never thought about it that way, but that is so true. Especially for 2015, 2017, and 2019 she really stepped it up vocally for the Christmas shows. I feel like 2022 gave her Rockefeller flashbacks even though she didn’t get a huge backlash.

Also worthy of mention for 2019 Caution in my opinion is how she recorded new playback during that time (off the top of my head, Obsessed "he's all up in my George Foreman" was rerecorded) and was willing to drop playback for "special occasions" For example, the BBMAs performance is basically all live besides that one part of WBT & she dropped some (& recorded some new? The MIAM era was such a missed opportunity. It started out very strong with the success of #Beautiful, but as the song was still climbing, she had her injury while filming the video for the remix and it lost momentum quickly and her confidence seemed to wane as well. Been enjoying this series. It's interesting how in this video the formulas rightfully receive some praise. I think it worked well with her voice in these years, but eventually we will see why lipping the whole thing altogether is less risky than lipping individual syllables and all the over the top formulas that have been created. IMO the single biggest reason why so many lambs were fooled by her voice last year was because the audio was consistent finally. Great job on the long video!

Such an intriguing and entertaining video per usual.
i was surprised at the 58% live vocals for miamtecs lol i remember a lot of her live vocals very fondly (one of the few times she ever belted ‘when you’re looking into my eyes’ btw) but i never realized she was lipping so many songs lol can’t wait for you to cover the legendary jamaica concert!
*Long comment warning* I’d rather have one long comment rather than a million different ones lol. I’m in awe of the depth your videos go into. I’m really intrigued by the approach you have to investigating her lip syncing habits and how you put the videos together. I also love how you interpret the reasoning for her lip sync system designing and decisions in general. The way you consider everything happening in a chronological sequence helps understand her motives at each point in time whether it’s a logical decision or psychological etc. Something tells me this live singing mood she had in the era you covered in this video actually started cooking in MOAIA era but she just wasn’t acting on it yet. For example she was talking about how she wanted to perform underneath the stars on the AA tour during a concert (maybe a fan requested it or had it on a sign or something I forgot) but she said the band didn’t know it so she was like another time lol. She started catering to the lambs a lot around 2011 after the pregnancy. Like starting to sing that “we are lambily” song and performing underneath the stars and other fan favorites, even as snippets AND all the beautiful impromptu moments. She also started an annual “Lamb Day”, I’m not sure of the actual name, but it started on Feb 11 of 2012 I believe. Feb 11 was a shoutout to the opening lyrics in babydoll btw. Unfortunately she aborted the idea due to the passing of Whitney Houston on the same day. And we probably missed on a lot of cool stuff she was gonna show us. Maybe eventually we got it regardless though who knows. On another note I think she might’ve have done the it’s like that climax live on that 2012 concert intentionally. It seemed like she was totally ready for it to happen and she nailed it like she knew she could lol. That makes me think she rehearsed it that way. When her playback fails she’s usually caught off guard and looks surprised for a moment kinda like in that CTTA performance. I’m not sure what happened there, maybe muscle memory made her lip sync even tho it was intended to be live? 😂 I think her voice was at such a great place and she was very confident and it showed with her decreased lip syncing. Her voice started getting healthy and strong during MOAIA as she was getting her body ready to conceive. By the time she gave birth it was probably even better than in MOAIA. I also notice a tonal shift after she gave birth. The first time I remember hearing it was on the Toni Bennett duet. The first thing she did after the pregnancy. Also just a little side note she started partly lip syncing make it happen before ischgl. It was in the AA tour at a certain point. Not from the beginning tho. And I feel like we need to give Ischglriah some grace since it was a literal ski resort, so she was probably freezing her behind off. I feel like she didn’t expect her voice to give out on her like that. I imagine at that time she normally was in a great vocal condition so it was probably very frustrating because people just believed that’s how she sounded normally. But it was really extreme conditions for her fragile voice.
It's interesting you say Underneath The Stars is like a way for her cater to lambs specifically-I never thought about it that way. I guess in 2012-13 was when Mariah was most connected/active with the Lambily then? Considering she also did those impromptus and deep cuts and little snippets in rehearsal in 2012-13.
@@VMariah yea go to her official channel and look at videos from like 2011-2012 there was a moment that people don’t really reference when she surprised a lamb in china and whistled a little bit to them I think and she also sang a bit of babydoll on Feb 11 of 2012. She was also active on twitter with the lambs. Edit: let’s say from like December 2011 to Oct 2014.
@@AchillesandArtemisyou made a lot of interesting points. In regards to her voice changing after pregnancy, I actually hear a tone shift in the DC special rehearsals, when she attempts those upper belts there’s a slight metallic quality, and that would become more pronounced later in the decade. By 2012, her tone had lost some depth, but retained ease. This depth would return for 2013 and 2014. 2015 after Jamaica she lost that warm quality
9:21 THE AGILITY!!!! Also I just want to say Mariah really sacrificed her voice for us. I mean, the whistle register and whisper falsetto are really damaging to your voice but she did it anyway because she was so determined to give her all for us. I wish she had a vocal coach so then she wouldn’t have got into so many bad vocal habits but I still appreciate her for what she did for us fans.
Oh im invested!!! Especially because its coming from an actual lamb and not a hater😭 i cant wait to hear what you think about her lipping most of her shows today 😢
The saddest thing is that after 2014, she still has that need to prove that she still has a lot to show vocally. The demand became increasingly fierce with her. I'm not in favor of the use of playback but it has become part of her and many artists. But the demands on Mariah are higher than on other singers. And she doesn't like demands because SHE demands a lot and it's obvious that it affects her. Anyway, it's not easy being Mariah. And the crazy thing is that she watches videos related to her vocal range and I imagine how complicated it is to be charged. Even due to his level of excellence and perhaps the difficulty of her repertoire, added to the lack of vocal care and his emotional problems. All of these are risky factors for her. This need to prove to her fans that she can still sing live. That's kind of sad. She feels it. Because of her terrible insecurity too.
You are a true connoisseur. Yes, Beacon was the redeeming success that signified yet another rebirth/comeback after a short fall. To have been in the audience for the first Beacon shows, the Voice felt more present than ever, nothing other than her voice, the vocals were expertly crafted… and Mariah was so nervous the first day. She cried during the first show. I’m glad her hard work paid off and that she turned her Christmas’s efforts into her most lucrative deals ever.
I love 2013riah sm, especially those impru moments. Also for the next video, think about the Jamaica show in 2015. She let go of al lot of the lipsync that night😂
i think the hero performance matched the arrangement really well with the pitched down studio tracks esp in the 'look inside you and be strong" part since her tone was more clear and deeper here but idk thats just what i noticed
i think ,she decided to use the pitch down 1993 “the way" on Hero because it sounded more powerful with her vibrato sound so balanced in that track and she love to hear that i think
That D6 in I Still Believe proves that her head voice is really strong, and what's weak is her falsetto. Also, based on that tone, a lot of Mariah's 6th octave notes imo are head voice right now (2023-now).
for the make it happen performance at american idol it’s actually the opposite! she lipped to the studio track “if you believe within your soul, just hold on tight and don’t let” then sings live “goooo”. and i believe the “make it happeeeeeeeen” was also live🤔
Raising the key to the original in order to sing the whole thing live in 2012 was another baffling choice! Trying to sing it higher than in 1998. Tbh I think doing AIWFCIY in the original key these years is crazy too, even if it gave us some great moments.
Like in 1998-1999, every other performance would be live or lipped, in a lower or original key. Then 2010 was like a little bit live. 2012 was almost fully live. Then 2018 was fully lipped. Like its crazy lol.
I’ve always been sooo curious to hear JUST FOR ONCE how she would have sounded if she had attempted some of her most difficult climaxes live between like 2005-2014, for example i really can’t imagine her sustaining the E5s in O Holy Night with her voice condition of that time, but i really wanted to hear her trying it at least 😭 It’s like after 2005 she lost her range above her passaggio, i mean she could still access that area but everything sounds completely like her chest voice, which is obviously not a good thing for her vocal chords
@@VMariah Thank you! I didn't realize that the name of that song was actually mentioned in the video. It's a very nice song, the long note on C#5 is especially invaluable. I'm Japanese, so it's hard for me to fully understand your video, but I love Mariah Carey so much and look forward to your wonderful videos!
It’s sad that if you make one for 2023-2024 she’s practically lip syncing 99% of every concert now :( I never would’ve thought that the bar would end up being THIS low.
It’s so annoying that Mariah’s fan base is the only ones who pick the artist apart and air out the flaws and show of the artist. I am ashamed to be a part of this fanbase.

I think her voice was at such a great place and she was very confident and it showed with her decreased lip syncing.
@@outsideskippy1997 good point. I feel like her tone got lighter again in 2015/2016 and then got deeper again in 2017 and lighter again in 2018 lol
14:45 this sent me so bad im sorry, not a lip synced speech 😭
Was that real or is it a joke cuz why lip a speech 😭💀
9:21 THE AGILITY!!!! Also I just want to say Mariah really sacrificed her voice for us. I mean, the whistle register and whisper falsetto are really damaging to your voice but she did it anyway because she was so determined to give her all for us. I wish she had a vocal coach so then she wouldn’t have got into so many bad vocal habits but I still appreciate her for what she did for us fans.
2013 - Mariah's year of agility. This year is marked by that!
I loved this video ❤❤❤
Thank you!❤
SO GOOD, CANT BELIEVE WE'RE GETTING INTO 2015/2016!
Oh im invested!!! Especially because its coming from an actual lamb and not a hater😭 i cant wait to hear what you think about her lipping most of her shows today 😢
Please-
that part when you said she lost her 2008 hero playback stems so she instead used pitched down 1993 is sending me 😭
Her acapella love takes time in Australia is one of my all time favourites
24:46 You put that perfectly! I totally agree❤
THE SPEECH LMAO? I guess she really didn’t wanna misspeak for something that important
i could’ve gone my whole life without knowing she lipped youre mine on bet
Sue truly made lip-syncing into an art, or even a science!
i think the hero performance matched the arrangement really well with the pitched down studio tracks esp in the 'look inside you and be strong" part since her tone was more clear and deeper here but idk thats just what i noticed
This was such an underrated vocal era
Well done! You did a great job, however I was missing the 2013 GMA performance from this video.
What about it?
The beggining of that 2014 tour... It was struggle bus for us 😭 the media dragging her looks and her vocals
i think ,she decided to use the pitch down 1993 “the way" on Hero because it sounded more powerful with her vibrato sound so balanced in that track and she love to hear that i think
Almost time! Its at 10:30 for me
Oh my god ur doing God's work. Bless uuu!
9:01 gurl same I would cry too 😭
After this series, will there be a ranking of which Era of Mariah had the least and the most use of playback?
I will consider making one!
25:02 this is just like daydream era. Mariah ATE.
Amazing work on this - I wish the Lambily weren't so hostile to the FACT of playback/lipping. It's ok, y'all. Our queen knows what's best.
It's gonna get out on 11:30!!🙌🙌I'm bout to sacrifice some sleep for this💀💀
help it's also the longest one yet💀 good luck🙏😭
@@VMariah f my sleep schedule your content is better (ooh 1 minute left)
@@TrollBreaker24 😭😭
That D6 in I Still Believe proves that her head voice is really strong, and what's weak is her falsetto.
Also, based on that tone, a lot of Mariah's 6th octave notes imo are head voice right now (2023-now).
14:45 its giving 2024 lipping the speech in I Wish You Knew😭
Could u pls explain whether come ye faithful with her mom is live or not. U missed a lot
Come ye faithful is mostly lipped I think. There are some live parts outside of the climax, but most of those are probably dubbed too
for the make it happen performance at american idol it’s actually the opposite! she lipped to the studio track “if you believe within your soul, just hold on tight and don’t let” then sings live “goooo”. and i believe the “make it happeeeeeeeen” was also live🤔
'Make it happeeeeen' was a lowered studio track.
ISB has to be her most inconsistent song ever lol always going between fully live, partially lipped, and fully live lol
I’ve always been sooo curious to hear JUST FOR ONCE how she would have sounded if she had attempted some of her most difficult climaxes live between like 2005-2014, for example i really can’t imagine her sustaining the E5s in O Holy Night with her voice condition of that time, but i really wanted to hear her trying it at least 😭
It’s like after 2005 she lost her range above her passaggio, i mean she could still access that area but everything sounds completely like her chest voice, which is obviously not a good thing for her vocal chords
I was curious about your thoughts on the I stay in love performance at the vma’s
As far as I can tell I think that performance is mostly lipped to a stripped-down studio track, with a few live adlibs in the first half of the song.
@@VMariah what about the other I Stay In Love?
@@Supcharged I think it's pretty much the same. A few live parts at the beginning and then it's mostly the track.
14:45 this is unhinged 😭😭😭
The blame is on herself, why did she made such hard songs to sing it LIVE. The Queen of Music
What is the name of the song that was played in the opening? I love this video!
Thank you! the name of the song is The Art of Letting Go.
@@user-oj4qq5tq4j No problem, I'm glad you enjoyed!
It’s sad that if you make one for 2023-2024 she’s practically lip syncing 99% of every concert now :( I never would’ve thought that the bar would end up being THIS low.
Was that american idol VOL really live omg
yess it was!
WHAT LIVE WAS THAT THE ONE WHERE SHE WAS SITTING ON TOP OF THE PIANO????
Lullaby of birdland, at Melbourne 2014
It’s so annoying that Mariah’s fan base is the only ones who pick the artist apart and air out the flaws and show of the artist. I am ashamed to be a part of this fanbase.
I can't accommodate everyone's preferences. If it's annoying to you, you can choose not to watch it
2014 Beacon was such an incredible time to be a lamb.
14:46 Huh?? Why would she lip this? 😭 That's so funny for no reason
also a question, is the WBT performance at her house really 100% live? cause it's so well executed and mother came on strong that day
climax sounds like the same one she used on rotation during that era
which one boo?
@@onedollarbleach6891 i think the one where she also did Heavenly
oh yeah it was called At Home In Concert
Prepare for the sensitive lamb comments cuz this storyline is about to get juicy dolls xp
Fun fact! She did do a snippet of Love Takes Time in 2006 at the Winnipeg show of TAOM.
Edit: she also was going to do VOL for the AA tour, but she replaced it with Its a Wrap.
ohh did she ever say why she replaced VOL?
@@VMariah Nope, she replaced it last minute ahead of the tour.
14:55 wait what? That hero performance was live? It's one of my favourites but I was sure it was fully lip synched
It's probably dubbed quite a bit but it looks like she sang live with the usual lip-sync formula! The speech on the other hand seems actually lipped lol
@@VMariahit’s probably just dubbed, maybe the mic audio quality wasn’t good enough
Could you make the same videos about Celine Dion??
I'll consider it after I wrap up this series!
@@VMariah thank you!
I wish you included two things
The we belong together at GMA 2013
Joy to the world preformances 2014-let earth recieeeeeve haaaaaaa kinggginingaaa lmao
GMA We Belong Together wasn't anything special though, it was just a new track.
@@heeheeriah yes it was live. Her playback got cut off and then she had to sing the entire climax live.
@@jimsings3409 It wasn't live, it's a 2012 track. She's used it in several performances since then too. It was even included in the stems a capella: czcams.com/video/SEIJmZctjV0/video.htmlsi=akaGXhTKou15jfB_&t=391
Most of what was captioned is correct.
it's so confusing how the hero 1993 pitched-down track matches her voice so well in the 2010s than the 2008 rerecording, lol
5:29 she probably thought that if her voice kept progressing at this rate, her voice would end up being indistinguishable from the lowered 1993 version
her best vocals are in those inpromptus
Live notes Always more powerfull than lip sync part
Say what u will I know she got lip syncing a couple of times when she was younger and now so what idc whatever sometimes they have to do that so they don't blow their voice out and give their voice a break to cuz she lost her voice cuz of the condition she has she had a beautiful voice an amazing as well so sad we can't hear it like we used to god bless you mariah ur my favorite and ur the best love you ❤
