It looks like DooM but damn I hate the story and lore of the NuDoom games. As for the gameplay I hate how armor does nothing especially with almost 1 hit deaths. It ain't about Git Gud as I wipe my ass with Git Gud. These games are new Painkiller.
I loved Doom Eternal, but the gameplay loop was a bit much for me considering that I'm getting older so I'm hoping this sequel (or rather prequel) just lets you fuck shit up in hell with whatever you want without worrying about burning demons for armor, punching demons for health, etc.
Me too. I loved Doom 2016 more for it's straight forward action than Eternal's constant switching of weapons and gadgets. So I very much would also prefer that they go simpler again. That is more Doom for me.
I honestly just found the gameplay stale after 3 playthroughs, there's no much to do there, and trying out weapon mods isn't exactly a "refreshing experience" when the maps are that linear and scripted, the super colorful artstyle got old fast too
Watched the Gamespot interview with Hugo and Marty, and I love the fact that they specifically wanted this new Doom to feel a bit more in line with the classics in terms of being more boots-on-the-ground and such X33
I just hope it's not 30 different gimmicks bundled together and called combat. I loved DOOM ETERNAL but I got fed up being forced to use bad weapon attachments just to kill one type of demon.
@@Jay-og4yb Doom Eternal absolutely forces you to use the same narrow strategies to kill way too many enemy types. Even if you are good at the game its boring to replay after a certain point which is not a problem I had with Doom 2016 when I recently reinstalled both games.
The aesthetic of this reminds me a lot of some of the cooler classic doom was that have come out of the years, in particular it makes me think of parts of Eviternity for instance. There was another one too that was it’s own standalone story that had full-on weapon and enemy replacements along side this same kind of barbarian-medieval lowkey sci-fi aesthetic but I can’t for the life of me remember the name. Will come back and reply if I find out
Yeah. When the name dropped I expected this to be a Doom game in name only, which WAS a Quake game but got rebranded for the recognition. But no... this was always a Doom game.
I'd love to have a more loose gameplay loop as well. Doom eternal was great, but it was sometimes feeling like my desk job in terms of 'you have to nail this the way someone has laid it out for you' Let's give players back a bit of freedom in choosing how to deal with enemy hordes. The setting is great as well
There are a multitude of ways to approach every enemy in Eternal. The tutorials each explain one way to do it, but there are many other ways. For example, you can use remote det rockets activating behind the doomslayer to falter him while he's in his protective stance.
It should have been a new Quake or Hexen but I guess Doom is their cash cow. Fingers crossed this paves the way for lovecraftian Quake to be rebooted or dark fantasy magic spewing Hexen.
I was honestly expecting them to make Heretic, when it was mentioned that their next Doom game would set in medieval times and they would use game name such as "Doom: Heretic". :P
Lol yeah that's still unexplained isn't it? Hugo said they wanted to try a comic and/or online codex to fill in some of Eternal's gaps, but they just never have gotten around to that as far as I know :(
I honestly would have preferred a sequel to Doom Eternal, focusing on whatever Samur became at the end of Ancient Gods Part One, him mustering strange monstrosities and any remaining Maykrs against the Slayer, but Dark Ages looks like a lot of fun.

i think the confetti will be in the game but wasnt shown in the trailer so that the visuals come through better and theres no clutter so its more visually pleasing, i sincerely doubt they would just outright remove glory kills and/or the drops from enemies
It looks to have the mechanical depth of Eternal with the multi-functional shield, but aesthetically it has the darker gritty realism of 2016. The levels also look quite big and open, which makes me hope they'll have the more open-ended exploration of 2016 as well.
To be honest, doom 2016 wasn't my cup of tea and I didn't even try doom eternal, because the thought of being forced to use specific weapons for specific enemies was completely unappealing. If they go with that sort of "rock, paper, scissors" gunplay, I'll give it a hard pass as well.
I eas absolutely hoping for a Quake reboot or even Hexen. I hope this makes it more likely but I'm worried Id are pretty much just gonna focus all in on Doom.
IMHO DE and Ancient Gods, over-explained and took out alot of mystery and horror out of Hell. But thinking it would be cool for future doom games have Slayer visiting other civilizations in the eternal war against what should be an endless realm of pure evil ever expanding and corrupting. I get that vibe from this and Im hyped.
It should've been the Quake Reboot, let the Doomguy sleep for awhile. Feels like they're starting to put out more Doom games now like how Activision pumps out CoD games.
This trailer gives me massive open world vibes. I'm not sure how I feel about that if it's a reality, but if it is, I pray they license the Shadow of War nemesis system and put that into the game. I would freaking cream.
If the opening scene of the game isn't Doomguy standing over the corpse of the Mother of all Demons in The Absolution arena I'm gonna be a little blue balled.
You know something's going to happen to that chainsaw shield, and I can't help but notice that the shotgun is missing its grappling hook... I wonder if it's going to get broken and then MacGyver'd onto the shotgun somehow...
what are you talking about, og doom had you grounded and dodging projectiles which you can clearly see in the trailer. Doom 3 atmosphere is peak though, especially the hell environments. Doom 3 had the best hell enviro for sure.
I've seen that argument a few times already about Eternal being a bit prescriptive and I never understood it. Perhaps it's playing community made levels that shook up my style but there's a lot of on-the-fly thinking involved in Eternal IMO. And yeah the base game doesn't really ask it a lot, but TAG1 (and 2 to some extent) definitely require it. I'd say the main issue (solved by community levels) is that you don't really need to use EVERY tool in your arsenal to get by even in Nightmare. You could ignore the blood fist and still finish the game and DLCs, or ignore one of the grenade types and be fine, same with weapon switching, meathook/chainsaw combo and so on. But once you start fluidly chaining those together exactly when you need to it's just fantastic. Mind you I personally love 2016 equally. It's very different, but I just love both games equally (and the og ones almost equally as well !). I wouldn't mind seeing a semi-open world structure as long as it's done well and reinforces the combat. But a lot of those battlefields definitely look very open. This leaves room for optional nail-biting hard events in the world and maybe some "metroidvania-esque" level design. Can't wait to see what they do with the whole formula, but clearly it's gonna be amazing if they don't screw it up !
Yeah, the thing about doing your own thing in Eternal is that you need to think of it a little like someone going down a skill tree in an ARPG. What do you need to happen to the demons, what ways can you get there, you kinda need to think through what you're doing ahead of time and your options aren't very obvious. They already tutorialize so much and they would've needed to do MORE of that for everyone to get it. (Also, holy shit, Eternal is the most stressful game I've played in my life. That probably factored in as well.)
@@colbyboucher6391 I think a series of small tutorial-skinned arenas to teach some of the more complex ideas and develop the "combat language" could have been a good thing. Showing that you can combine freeze + hook + chainsaw to get all resources at once, hook maneuverability, switching to shield when finishing a glory kill, showing different basic combos to build an intuition (once you learn to punch + SSG + ballista + triple rocket a Doom Hunter and call it a day on its sorry hide, that feels so good). Yes, yes it is stressful. The community levels are absolutely brutal too and challenge you to the maximum. Haven't played some of those for a while but I'm planning on giving the master campaigns a try as they look wonderful !
Helldiver drop-in, God of War clothing, with a touch of Evil Dead. 😂👌 Very original, "but but Shield! Flying Dragon! Mech Suit!!" Give me a break. That being said, I truly hope people who buy this game, enjoy it.
To be honest, The Ancient Gods Part 2 still fucking infuriates me, so maybe I'll get it as long as nobody who worked on The Ancient Gods is involved and we just pretend that never fucking happened
after the huge disappointment that eternal was for me (that trite mechanic where you have to exceut enemies all the times or you won't get health and ammo, meaning you will see the same decapitations and mutilations like a billion of times) I am very doubtful this time. doom 2016 was a much superior game imho
Shame Mick Gordon likely isn't doing the soundtrack, considering how Bethesda/ID Software basically screwed him over with the messy production of the Doom Eternal soundtrack, and then the executive producer had the gall to throw him under the bus on Reddit. Marty Stratton is a lying scumbag.
When I heard dark ages, my first thoughts were 'parry mechanic' and 'dodge roll'. I'd rather have that while shotgunning everything than the constant gun switching of eternal. Looks promising.
Eh, I dunno. If anything this feels like it should have been a new Quake reboot but the execs demanded a new Doom instead so they're stuck with worst parts of Eternals lore being made into a full game now. The one area most people agreed was the worst part of that game.
Game devs listening to their playerbase? That only happens when they massively fucked something up and want to try and hide it. Hope that's not the case this time.
I don't believe it woul dbe better than Eternal. After they took the worst parts from DooM 2016, threw the good parts away and they doubled down on the worst in DLCs... I have zero hope in Hugo Martin delivering something playable. Probably everything will have a cooldown.
Kind of wished this would pivot into Quake (or at least the original script), Heretic or Hexen,, less than a Doom Prequel. Maybe I'm alone on that one.
I want 2 doom games... one is the FPS scene from the 2004 doom movie being it's own game. Like brutal doom as a AAA game with less campy action and more action horror like Brutal Doom 64. The other is a Doom Wars: Enemy Territory where there are 3 teams and 6 factions and the missions are battlefront style level scenarios over the various battles told through the lore and even playing the ending of immora from the demons and sentinel perspective. This game would be a multiplayer only huge combined arms game like Quake Wars: Enemy Territory. and the teams would be ARC and Sentinels vs. Maykr and Cultist vs. UAC and Hell... 3 teams and 6 factions.
I'd love another Enemy Territory, but does Splash Damage even exist any more after Dirty Bomb? There was a very particular philosophy and vibe that they brought to their games. I miss 'em. It wouldn't feel like Enemy Territory without them, probably just a Battlefield clone.

Less of a Doom and more of an Elden Ring to be honest, just without the difficulty spike. Personally i haven't been interested in Doom ever since its 2016 iteration. It just lost a lot of charm for me, but it is cool that some find it still fun. I just feel like it keeps being more and more snappy, fast pace but ultimately too easy of a walkthrough, just flashy walk in a park. Screw it: just realized the vibe i got= Painkiller mixed into Doom.
That's what I was thinking too with some of the weapons looking like something straight out of Painkiller, particularly that stakegun the Doomslayer was using.

I feel like the reason they didn't go with a new Quake game and go with Doom again is beacouse of the executives
pretty much. Brand recognition is king. so they go with a vaguely medieval doom instead of a new quake or any other IP.
I don't know that this tracks. Quake is not really out of the public conscience. It's not as big as Doom now, but that's because they revived Doom in 2016. Their big showcase is still called Quakecon, for Christ's sake.
@@Allen.Christian yea and no, yea Quake isn't much known to the public as doom, but ID software said they wanted to make a new Quake single player game, but like I said, the executives wanted more doom cuz it's more popular, also Quake champions is a thing that was made not to long ago
It's also because MS just acquired them and probably want them to make a safe successful title. They will probably do quake after this game, depending on success (which I 100% guarantee it will be)
@@soulivan827i think they will only make a Quake game, if new Doom isn't as successful. Remember, Eternal divided the fanbase,. some didn't like the new playstyle, the platforming, the lore. and then there was the whole Gordon drama, who won't be back for this new instalment. That's why Hugo falsely markets it as "classic Doom", they are trying to bring back the disappointed players. There is a good chance this game will be a hit, but with the lowest sales in the trilogy. And that might force the execs to put it in ice and greenlight a Quake reboot. we ll see.
literally Quaken't
Real glad they aren't doubling down on the spastic pace of Eternal. I really like that game and it's gameplay, but there's not much more you can turn up there before something breaks.
Didn't care for a possible new DOOM game just a couple days ago, The Dark Ages trailer drops and I'm excited again. That's the magic right there.
I will say, it is funny to see people criticize the new fantasy visual and artistic direction now when they were the ones defending it in Doom Eternal. Personnally, I am not a fan but I can appreciate the game nonetheless.
Good ol' 4th map descent 2 music!
They should have given Hexen or Heretic the Doom 2016 face lift instead.
Exactly, shame is most modern Doom fans probably have never even played those games.
@@TheTrveMothlord I think that's why it would be perfect, a modern version that kicks ass and introduces newer fans to the older titles. Might even give inspiration for the modding community to spice things up for the older games and gamers. So much potential but no effort... is what it is.

Doom eternal didn't force anything except for you to git gud
@@belandino Doom is Doom; Quake is Quake, so no.
Totally true.
I'd love to have a more loose gameplay loop as well. Doom eternal was great, but it was sometimes feeling like my desk job in terms of 'you have to nail this the way someone has laid it out for you'
Let's give players back a bit of freedom in choosing how to deal with enemy hordes. The setting is great as well
Unless you were playing on Nightmare you could do that pretty easily. Ultraviolence wasn't that tricky.
Medieval Doom? Wouldn't this be Heritic then?
I was honestly expecting them to make Heretic, when it was mentioned that their next Doom game would set in medieval times and they would use game name such as "Doom: Heretic". :P

I'm fine if the dragon riding is limited to on-rails segments, that makes it basically Panzer Dragoon in Doom and I love Panzer Dragoon. 😝
I honestly would have preferred a sequel to Doom Eternal, focusing on whatever Samur became at the end of Ancient Gods Part One, him mustering strange monstrosities and any remaining Maykrs against the Slayer, but Dark Ages looks like a lot of fun.

As long as it's closer to Doom 2016 than Doom Eternal, I might give it a chance. But we'll see.

This trailer gives me massive open world vibes. I'm not sure how I feel about that if it's a reality, but if it is, I pray they license the Shadow of War nemesis system and put that into the game. I would freaking cream.
I think players who are too much used to Doom Eternal's mandatory gameplay will have a hard time in Doom: The Dark Ages.
The open areas give me serious slaughter-map vibes

I'm glad they brought in the Agaddon Hunters in their original form. Telos Realm level, maybe?
You know something's going to happen to that chainsaw shield, and I can't help but notice that the shotgun is missing its grappling hook... I wonder if it's going to get broken and then MacGyver'd onto the shotgun somehow...
This doesn't feel like Doom anymore, I'm just want my techbase corridor levels and the same gameplay, no, I want the Doom 3 ATMOSPHEEERE
Ever since Doom Eternal they've clear decided to just assimilate stuff from Quake 1 and Hexen/Heretic to fluff it up aesthetically.
what are you talking about, og doom had you grounded and dodging projectiles which you can clearly see in the trailer. Doom 3 atmosphere is peak though, especially the hell environments. Doom 3 had the best hell enviro for sure.
Shut up and go play doom 2 mods then
I've seen that argument a few times already about Eternal being a bit prescriptive and I never understood it.

Unpopular opinion: chainsaw shield is not metal af, or at least less so than not needing cover and just using a regular ass chainsaw to scalp demons
I'm looking forward to this one. Hope they don't screw it up.
Its going to suck worse than eternal
So Dark Ages is basically Serious Sam 4?
Just a little trolling
after the huge disappointment that eternal was for me (that trite mechanic where you have to exceut enemies all the times or you won't get health and ammo, meaning you will see the same decapitations and mutilations like a billion of times) I am very doubtful this time. doom 2016 was a much superior game imho
glory kills and having to chainsaw enemies constantly in the late game sucked in 2016 too
Looks better than Quake Dark Hour for sure
Hugo implied that there will be some backtracking between levels perhapse some metroidvania DNA?
Your commentary - better than the game
Who do you think the new composer is? It’s probably not Mick Gordon.
Kind of wished this would pivot into Quake (or at least the original script), Heretic or Hexen,, less than a Doom Prequel. Maybe I'm alone on that one.
How are people complaining about this game? Criticism is ight but i dont get why some are saying this ‘isn’t doom’

Have the 50mph sprint be explained as power armor, I don't care, give me Phobos and Deimos spaceports and blood and gore and demons and a pair of Barons rising from coffins in a glowing red pentacle room.
