My thoughts on DOOM: The Dark Ages and the future of Quake.
TANKHEAD by Emerson Tung and Tim Popelier - linktr.ee/tankhead
Correction at 21:32. I remember reading an article where it was stated that MachineGames asked if they could make a new Quake game but were offered Wolfenstein instead. I have not been able to find this article and I believe that I have conflated certain details from things I've read over the years. A 2014 Polygon article by Russ Pitts is most likely what I was misremembering.

Andrew Hulshult has confirmed that he's not involved with DOOM: The Dark Ages

saddest news to ever come out about this game atm. truly can't get any lower than this..
HUH? That's a shame because the background music in the trailer resembles Hulshult's work
@@ET0228Why? The new person seems to be good so far
@@Jayboe1123 its serviceable. but far from being iconic or memorable compared to what Mick Gordon was able to achieve with the 2016 and eternal ost. Which is to be expected in all honestly. Atleast the art style looks really good in TDA's.
@@ET0228 The trailers usually don't show the best tracks in the game.
I’m maybe weird because i actually like the story that ID is making with doom, what can I say I’m a huge nerd 🤓
NERD!! 🫵
@@PoweredbyidTech 🫵Caveman. No monke. Master Oogway no approb.
Same. Space medieval knights is the most metal thing they could have come up with lmao
It's a great story so far. If anyone actually payed attention they'd realize how interesting and fun it is. Plus they've molded DOOMSLAYER into a really badass character instead of just a lucky space marine AKA doomguy
Most people do, its just that the ones who dont are very vocal
I think the current zombie model is just placeholder. All the Doom Eternal footage in 2018 showed the Doom 2016 revenant model before the changed it
I hope dark ages keeps eternals style of hud and menu. It feels very refined once you get used to it.
idk I kinda like the Codex entries of 2016 and eternal, lore that serves as background is cool
Really dude, I been playing doom forever and finding out he was the same guy was insane! Ppl say oh he’s a god now oh this story is so boring, Jesus Christ these people don’t have appreciation for anything great, I absolutely love the lore, ppl just want him to be a one sided and honestly pretty lame character? Just annoying to hear
@@passingRakz954 Exactly.

I vaguely remember that being the case as well. If its not from that polygon article perhaps it was an interview when they were doing the Mission Packs for Quake a few years later? I can't seem to find any interviews from Machine Games around the time Quake DOPA released, but I do recall an interview where they gave more details.
“Someone get this man more subs”
What you said about the Accelerator being a lightning gun variant is interesting. I thought it was a careless asset flip when sentinel soldiers were carrying Doom 2016 lightning gun in TAG2 Immora intro
I think Hugo said they gonna change Unwilling's disaign
I'm really surprised you didn't mention the obvious inspiration by Painkiller. Did you see that spiky rotating weapon in that game that looks pretty similar to Saw-shield, or the Stake gun that looks like this Rail spike thingy? ;)
I agree with absolutely everything except for the part about not enjoying the thought of a deeper look into the Doom slayers reasonings for having such hatred for hell, and personally as much as i appreciate the bunny, it never really felt like enough for his anger shown in 2016 and eternal, plus its always been heavily implied that he lost everything including his family along with the removed photo of his wife and child, personally i think showing that amount of loss would fit perfectly with his pure drive to destroy the place and its inhabitants that caused his despare and will to do anything including ascension into demi-godhood in order to take his revenge.
Yeah man crazy how people will sorely look at the combat nothing else, the lore and environment, giant backdrops, how does that not make you love the story, they miss out on a lot than just purely killing things, eternal was godamn beautiful and the lore was badass and deep
Icing on the cake, they can keep the bunny part and just add on the pile of things to reduce hell's population for!
I love Doom's story man
It was always logical that Doomguy lost all his friends and family in the invasions, not just his rabbit, the rabbit was just like an easy choice by being so unpredictable, yet an iconic vision of having its head on a stick.
Nope. As someone who owned a bunny 14 years, it's plenty of reason for his anger. Also kind of hilarious that that's the reason 🤣🤣🤣
Really great points and very well thought out analysis. I too long for a Quake comeback, but DOOM TDA should hopefully more than tickle that itch!
At first I missed the new imps, but it actually does make sense. Since this takes place between 64 and 2016
Technically, as part of your concerns, it’s funny how you mention that “I don’t want to see doomguy’s traumatic backstory of losing his wife and kid from the demons” when the story for Doom 2 actually talks about the fact that he did lose his wife and kid, it’s just losing his Pet rabbit Daisy pushed him over of the edge.
That's literally one of the biggest reasons why doomguy was born. but i still don't think they're gonna show that, or atleast show it into the codex entries. That would be interesting too.
I absolutely do not want Machine Games to touch Quake. Not after they did to Wolfenstein.
I’ve been following you on Twitter for the last few years and I’ve only just now seen your videos appear in my recommended lol. Subbed!
The unwilling is just a place holder so we will get a new design for the zombie and I love the bad to the bone part 😂
I can’t believe I never noticed the knight have the green bands, good catch, I’m glad there’s consistency threw eternal, including the unwilling, we are already used to looking for them to stack up so it makes sense
I feel like the green coming from the hellnight may just be it’s ability to shoot green projectiles like it did in the first two dooms
I love new Dooms deep lore. I think it’s awesome.
Personally, I am sick and tired of people complaining about doom lore. ITS GOOD. STOP COMPLAINING. Are there things to criticize? Yes. But stop complaining about it existing. It’s by far the most interesting plot we’ve had in games in decades.
I actually quite enjoy the bits of lore that can be found in the Codex. My main issue was with TAG. I am still looking forward to seeing what happens in TDA. There is no need to be upset.
@@PoweredbyidTech I’ll admit I have to agree with you there. Tag, especially tag2 was a letdown in the story department. The whole thing with davoth being the true creator was just weird. I should probably just write it off as the devil crafting lies if it weren’t for the father affirming his statement. Maybe we could say the voice was not really the father but yet more trickery from davoth? It is messy though. And the davoth fight was a pathetic waste. I can knock out the first 2 arenas without even getting a low health warning. Pretty sure it would be no trouble to beat him on UN. He should’ve been more than a marauder. Hell, the game glitched one time and gave me the marauder tutorial for the dark lord fight.
Ok, I just found your channel and I gotta say....nice. Looking forward to more laughs and GORE. 🤣
Cheers, big ears! (i don't know if you have big ears or not)
when the 1st riff kicks in at the beginning of the gameplay i absolutely fucking love the direction the sound went.
eternal was more like a pig destroyer influence. dark ages sounds more like high on fire (death is this communion to be exact) influence.
dark mid evil fantasy matched with mid evil war march metal. fucking send it. those drum fills get me fuckin amped
Aracnotrons existed in early doom so they’re practically required to be in this.
I think its fair to criticize to lore since Hugo himself said he likes to have a heavy focus on lore. I know people like to throw out the old Carmack quote when shutting discussions for that down but it makes zero sense to hold that same standard today, especially since it was made in an era where story took a back seat in video games and even in the 90s that mindset quickly got phased out.
I completely agree with you about TAG2 jumping the shark, I know they wanted TAG 1 and 2 to be bigger but couldn't because of ...the sick... but that doesn't excuse the fact they completely wasted the franchises big bad that fans have wanted to see SINCE THE 90s on a 3 level DLC and a mediocre final boss. This and i also hate how everything became implied Heaven and Hell instead of literal Heaven and Hell from the bible, i wanted to fight biblical demons and angelic horrors not space squid people.
Not only "the sick" but also texas blackout as well...
God, i feel bad for id on this...
The thing is I feel like even modern games don't necessarily need to have a groundbreaking storyline. Putting effort into innovating and utilizing the interactive nature of a video game through gameplay design is much more engaging for me. That Carmack quote IS a little too exaggerated to be put into practice nowadays, but games 100% could and imo should thrive more with their gameplay. All the story needs to be is cohesive and reasonable. Fighting games, the Ninja Gaiden and DMC series are perfect examples of this. Criticizing is fine, but I feel like we as consumers should expect the gaming medium to not just do what movies and TV shows already do.
Not even Andrew is the composer of TDA. We don't know who is at this time.
Unfortunately for that portion of the video the timeline of events occurred like this:
- My video is published at exactly 3:00 PM EST
- Andrew tweets that he is not involved with the game at 5:12 PM EST
A hilarious circumstance that I could've avoided had I chosen to publish the video a day later.
honestly. i'd say it's overkill at this point. ID had the perfect opportunity to have the two other guys who both worked on the dlc ost for eternal to reprise their role. But for whatever reason that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. At this point who do you even have left?
ID really screwed up when Mick left the scene. Now the soundtrack is going through this weird identity crisis. Such a shame, but whoever is composing TDA's ost will at the very least do a decent enough job at making the soundtrack sound good enough to fit the overall vibe and theme of this new doom game.
Not having Andrew as the composer is a massive mistake
Marty is so salty that the soundtrack got so much credit and doesn't want that again even if it's at the games expense.
I agree that people completely overrated the soundtrack. In 2016, the gameplay was pretty braindead and kinda boring, but there was way too much electronic garbage in the music, and a few standout tracks. Eternals soundtrack was a million times better but the gameplay was also so much better that the whole "free game with soundtrack" joke also doesn't work at all there either
That joke never worked frankly
Still absolute career suicide to place as little importance on the soundtrack IN A DOOM GAME as Marty is, just because he's salty that Mick Gordon got too much credit
@@PoweredbyidTech oh I see... well that's ok, nothing bad happened :)
Hearing Them Bones in a video game style sound got the instant sub from me
czcams.com/video/ICUuLrH4z0c/video.htmlsi=hKA-BNpKVPzEmXqP
The trailer made me buy ancient gods part 2 and replay the whole game.
Im glad they appear to finding a blend of the best elements from 2016 and eternal. I loved 2016, but only liked eternal. I disliked the aesthetic and floaty nature of eternal, and all the complexities involved with the gameplay. 2016 was metal, and had fun and simple approachable gameplay.
nice vid. just discovered your channel and well, you got a new subscriber
I was really hoping they'd do a new Quake next. Hell, at this point merge the series'. The forces of hell being taken care of would be a good excuse for an older Eldritch god to make a powerplay or something.
Finnay, someone makes the evil dead joke
I really would like a seige mission where we have to protect a settlement from demons.
Yes a prequel, but i heard this explains the gap of DOOM 64 to DOOM ‘16. Correct me if im wrong.
You are entirely correct.
@@goldenrain4402 Thnx
17:46 otherwise
Definitely interested to see the new bfg design. I really enjoyed the rage 2 and doom 2016 designs. Considering the game takes place after doom 64 I’m curious to see what/if the unmaker comes back/looks like. That said I wonder if it’ll be the doom 64 design or eternals.
I hear knocking on the door after I saw 5:34
8:40 Nine Inch Nails lol
Dooms 2016 music by mick was golden I was hype aff when that shit dropped when u were swarmed by demons
that guy is obviously riding a pinky
Great breakdown !
Great video !
If u think mick leaving if software is bad for music, spend nearly any time in the actually music industry. Its beyond cut throat
I'm gonna miss Mick, Andrew and David.
Honestly I do think it he SSG is that powerful but not ALWAYS available unfortunately.
Skull crusher more like the meme machine😂
Gianni?
I still can’t forgive id for their sins against mick. They would be the target of the slayers rage for how objectively horrible they treated him. I probably love doom too much to boycott it, but I’m still not comfortable.
Get over it, it happened, move the fuck on
Based but please don't compare the Mega Chad, Doom Slayer with Captain(Fraud) America.
Great video but dude. 16:33 Irregardlessly? Lmao Irregardless isnt an actual word in the first place and then you throw a y in there lol people do it all the time im just being a dick i subscribed and look forward to your future analysis videos
Irregardless has been in the dictionary for years now.
I speak goodly. What you mean?
Tbh I don't like most of what I'm hearing about this game. It looks so much slower which could not be a worse direction to go. 2016 was already way too slow and too simple, eternal was perfect and they don't need to match that perfectly, but going in the opposite direction is the stupidest idea ever
Also the fact Andrew isn't making the soundtrack? Absolute blasphemy. Seriously, why has Marty not been fired yet? This is ridiculous
It's a DOOM GAME. The soundtrack matters way too much to keep replacing the composer. At least Andrew and David had credibility and did an amazing job on TAG (imo blood swamps is better than any mick Gordon soundtrack. The rest of TAG, not so much, but it was great still). Insane to not stick with them
I hope machinegames stays away from quake, wolfenstein new colossus is so generic and boring
