Good to see you at the old bug-out camp again. I didn't realize you can extract birch oil from bark so easily, so thanks for that Lilly but I would have liked to see the consistency of the final product. Birch essential oil has many beneficial uses so I'm going to start collecting bark now when I find it and try this extraction method. I've only used a campfire & a can to make charcoal out of pine cones for my black powder recipe, so this should be a fun project to experiment with.

You may also try using an egg crate for your fuel tablets in upcoming videos. Paper based material of egg crate, cotton and wax would make it burn really long. Plus it would be nice conical shaped tablets that would be easier to store. Egg crate burns very well on its own as well.
How cool to see your camp again. Amy seemed very happy there. With that odd bird noise, it was good to keep her close. Great way to recycle old candles too.

I would say that the sound is a screaming Roe Deer, we hear them all the time here on the swedish countryside and im fairly sure that you have those down in austria.

Bug out camp. That is where you go when the people in your life are starting to bug you... so you leave them for some peace and quiet and "re-charge time". Perfect! I've passed your name and videos to two young girls that have taken up archery. They needed some encouragement with their new hobby.
UPCYCLING TIP: You can also make your own CANDLES out of old wax rests. Heat them up in a beer can or saussage can, which is thin and high and then take a piece of braided cotton string, dunking it into the wax the full lenght, keep it straight and take it out very fast. Then let it sink in a container with cold water for some seconds. When you repeat this process 50 times for 15-20 minutes, the wax will make a new layer around the string each time it is dunked into the wax.
Damn that camp looks great, that must take so much patience and hard work. Really impressive for being built in the middle of a forest

actualy, the fresher the bark is - the more of oil you will get. Here in Ukraine we have stories about people, who travelled across the country from north to the south, to get salt from the Black Sea. This profession was called Chumak. Chumaks travelled by wagons, pulled by oxen. Oxen are tough, but slowly. And if you drive very slowly through the countryside behind pair of oxen - you get bites from lots of insects.
So, chumaks had their shirts soaked in this birch oil to repel all the insects from the body. It was also used as a lubricant for wagon wheels. They also mixed birch oil with some oil to cover the skin, as the oil is to strong to be put directly onto the skin.

Also, you probably already know, but a good trick to keep the fire from staining cooking 🍳 gear black is to rub soap and coat the outside. Then most of the black will wash off.
It's been a long while since I've watch your videos; still looking good and your channel success is incredible. Congratulations. I've gotten out of backpacking and into overland camping. At 74 it's time for me to end dirt time and get into comfort. Sucks to get old but I'm loving it! I'm converting a '19 GMC Savana 2500 cargo van into an overland camping unit including 4X4 installation. Your old camp still looks amazing. I think it's the best looking forest camp on You Tube due to your extensive knowledge and dedication to your craft. Awesome job, Lilly!

Great way to collect birch bark oil Lilly I have learned something new today and at my age that's very satisfying. I like the wax dipped cotton candles u made. If I'm not mistaken crayons burn like candle's also. Enjoy every video,and like learning new things,great video Lilly.👍

You should hang a plastic bottle string maker use the plastic string to secure and lightly warm with a propane torch good for making shelters furniture and so on u can distill plastic bottles down to fuel if your serious about surviving the apocalypse it also doesn't cost much for a hand driven well pump

That dog has a good life. Lilly's rucksack is cool, Amy's is even cooler. What's more Mum carries bed & blanket and feeds her twice as much steak as Mum eats !
Finally - back to your best videos - love it
Should keep that bio-char from the birch bark, can be used for a great soil amendment once it is charged. There are several ways to charge it, one is to mix it with ready to use compost or worm castings and let it sit for a few weeks. Similarly you can mix it with leaf mold or freshly started compost, but that generally takes longer, typically a few months. You could also put it where ever you plan to pee, and go on it any chances you get for at least a couple weeks.
After being charged it can be mixed into the soil you use for any plantings you do. The porous nature of the charcoal helps it hold onto moisture and nutrients for the plants better than soil without it. It is also a good growth medium for beneficial bacteria and the like. Supposedly it helps a bit with erosion control as well, but I'm not so sure how true that is. But the other big thing is that it will help things grow faster and usually increase yields. So well worth holding onto any bio-char you happen to produce, even if it is just a byproduct to something else like this.
Could even leave it uncharged and use it for making stuff like water filter after grinding it to a fine powder. Bigger chunks can be used as a fuel either on it's own or mixed with a binder and other stuff.

Not sure what you carry with you to protect yourself while out camping, but I ALWAYS go armed well for anything I could possibly contend with. Not paranoid, just being safe with no worries while out in the woods. Sounds carry very far in the woods. Especially at night. But usually the sound is more alarming then the actual animal making them. Thumbs Up!

That shelter with no walls and no roof is trouble Amy waiting to happen. You need to put up four walls and a roof on that camp before you go through a frightening situation you might no make it out of. The woods are known for taking people, too don't want to end up mussing.

The vocalisations sound very like the mating call of a Lynx. Could also be just a fox. You can find examples of recordings of both on CZcams. Lynx have been reintroduced in some parts of Europe. Although in my opinion they were never completely absent. We have lynx here in the UK.
Muntjack deer calling females
@@jasonloane3735 can't find any resource which states there are muntjack deer in Austria (I'm pretty sure that's where she lives)
Plenty in France and Holland , maybe no one writing about wandering deer in Europe, but that's what it is a muntjac deer calling.
I use a double boiler (wax can inside a pot of water) and dryer lint to make great fire starters. Put dryer lint in cardboard egg carton and pour in wax to soak lint. Let cool and cut into 12 fire starters. Enough wax makes them waterproof also. Cub scouts 1998.

Those wax/cotton fire starters are a great idea. Everyone should have a few in their bug out bag for rainy days.

The Animal noise sounded a lot like a Muntjak Deer. They're quite small, about the size of a Labrador dog. We have 1000s of them in the woodland areas in the Chilterns just north of London. Although they're not native to the U.K

That animal sound is a deer yelling. I had one yell at me from 10 ft / 3 meters. I have heard it lots since.
