      I decided to store my (small, cheap) sleeping bag in my car. Figured it may as well be there instead of sitting in a shelf in the storage room. Long-term storage in a car standing outside may not be the best to preserve it but, well, it's for use, not for sitting in a collection.

    • @chabis
      @chabis Před 2 lety +1

      @Rick Christopher Here it's entirely different. Buses and trains everywhere and the next house is never more than 15 minutes by foot away. Still, relying on everything working all the time is a bit dangerous. It may be exceptionally bad weather and rescue services need more time. And even in fairly normal situations it's simply more convenient if you can keep yourself warm until help arrives.

    • @asmith7876
      @asmith7876 Před 2 lety

      Wool blankets are great, as is being prepared in general. But a wool blanket is good down to maybe 50 degrees F for the average person, you'll start shivering and freezing your ass off below that. If you think you'll be stranded in cold weather, get a real sleeping bag rated for 10 to 20 degrees colder than you think you'll need.

  • @timhess6720

    My oldest son and I just had a camping weekend and the high for the weekend was around 19 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 Celsius). At night it was single digit temperatures with windchills below zero Fahrenheit (-17 or lower Celsius). The biggest challenge was trying to keep our water from freezing with the temps being well below freezing all weekend. We have sleeping bags good to 10 to 30 below zero for these trips along with fleece liners for them and we also carry a wool blanket for a little extra if needed. Watching your videos has us thinking about planning our next trip soon. We've been doing this for many years. Hopefully you are motivating others to get outdoors either for their first time or to go again if they haven't been in a while. Keep doing what you're doing Lilly!! Love it!

    I enjoy your overnight stays and your emergency preparedness content. I’m in Alaska so beyond what the world throws at us, we also have to deal with earthquakes. The quake in 2018 was an eye opener for us. I thought I was prepared until about 14 hrs after the quake my well became unusable. Off and on the next week we had days with no gas and then days with no power so the utility companies could make repairs. You help keep me on my toes and keep my mind busy with thoughts on being prepared

    I don't know anything about mushrooms and don't know the eatable ones from those which are poisonous. You seem to be well versed in mushrooms and know plenty about them. I wish you the best in trying to grow some of them on the wood you used there and hope everything works out for you. Amy seem to be enjoying herself there and just want to be with you as much as possible.

      My MiL taught my daughter to stomp on any mushrooms she sees while she is out and about. The rationalle is that if you tell a kid not to touch something, you know exactly what they are going to do...if you give them something to do with them they are less curious.

    Nice vid. I have a USB powered heating pad which is neat for keeping warm at cooler temps. I like to also have a winter bag for the car with warm gear food and drinks (wrap in clothes/blankets so it doesn't freeze) power bank for phone, flash light, jumper cables and or car starter, shovel, small candles, that sort of thing. Keep it in the backseat so it's accessible if something happens. The best prepared I ever was for a break down is when my truck blew a chain on the way to winter camping in a storm. I called a tow service and they broke the news it would be a while and I was totally fine because I had all gear to winter camp put doors with me. I was toasty. Listened to pod casts and had a hot chcolate lol now I just carry stuff on the reg just in case.

    Really cheered up my day seeing your video come through! It's been a miserable morning here in London so this was even more of a pleasure to watch!
    I've also been really fascinated by the couple of Mycelium projects youve done this year! Let's hope they come out well! Be interested to see how many mushrooms they produce and if they spread to other trees nearby or come up from the ground or any odd pieces of bark laying around? (You might end up with them inside the camp! Lol 😅) Great stuff as usual!
    BTW, (As usual) Your ENERGY, NEVER ceases to Amaze me! Even in this cold/changeable weather! I usually wish I was there participating, but this time I think I'm REALLY happy I'm not! Lol 😅

    Thinking about the rules you have to observe with your shelter, consider a fibonacci-swirl design, with a pivotal fire pit: even though there's no closed wall, there isn't a direct path to the outside cold; if you mud-mortar a low stone-wall cupping a fire-pit, the adobe-masonry can heat the inside; while the opening can face the fire pit, going all the way inside takes you behind the fire-places heated clay.

    Wilderness survival is so different in Eastern Australia. Soft or medium wood is hard to find while that is all you find there. Everything is hard wood most of the time. Soft or medium wood is something you spend days or weeks looking for in many places, everything is hard. Making a fire is that much more difficult but also much easier if you know how.

    Hey Lily,i don't know how capricious these mushrooms in particular are but it would probably multiply your success rate if you could use local spores to grow your bags in local soil and wood chips. Mushrooms have a tendency to evolve very rapidly and form local variations that adapted to use endemic nutrients. I know for some mushrooms it's an already lost fight to attempt it, and iirc oysters are moderately capricious about wood types and soil environment. You could increase your chances of inoculating by drying the wood first in oven above 230c as that temperature kills all forms of spores that would compete for mycelial dominion.
    The way i wood go about it would be to take a thick beech log about 30cm diameter, split in half along the length, pierce holes that don't completely go through and are very wide (~2-3cm) all over the exposed core wood and filling them with chips and sawdust from the same log, leave it to dry indoors over the winter and come spring and weather the mushrooms would thrive in, dry it in over to kill contams like explained above, then proceed to inoculate your spores in the holes. About 2cc per hole would be plenty, of course your spore solution concentration would help, but you don't need much when working with solution. Mycelium growth begins its when two single compatible spores meet common grounds and "fertilize" each other, so it's possible to stretch prints if you don't have a lot. Worst case it takes a week more to consolidate. If you want good tutorials on making your own spore syringes from prints, as well as making your own prints from local mushrooms i would suggest mycowilly. You just need some foil, a sterilized atmosphere either with flow hood or still air box, but i think you already know this stuff haha. I mainly wanted to comment

    Generally you’d want to use mushrooms from the area. That being said only a small amount of mycelium needs to survive the cold then it will take over. Very interested if it will take. If it don’t perhaps dig down a bit on a dead standing tree and Inoculate it on the root fill with dirt and cover with leaves. Very fun! I hope it works. I plan on going to pick my local mushrooms for spores next year. Just to have them in hand. All the best
