The guitar-work on this track is insane...Brian May has managed to reproduce the sounds of trad jazz just with guitars, amazing

All of the Orchestrations were done on guitar; no horns, woodwinds or brass of any kind.
    Brian May is a wizard

Hi Justin. Dave from London. It was a case of All By Myself for Brian May on this song (apart from the bass and drums of course). I remember back in 1974 my friends and I were just knocked out by the variety of sounds on this album (as well as the brilliantly varied songs), but the absolute highlight was Brian recreating a Dixieland jazz band with his guitar and effects. His ukelele playing is top notch too.

I grew up hearing this and always imagined a jazz band playing that part. I remember being so shocked and amazed that it was all Brian and his guitar. SO PERFECT!

It's a fun track with thoughtful lyrics, but done so well it's always enjoyable to listen to. Few other bands would have done something like this, so that's enough to commend Queen in my eyes. Trad Jazz was very popular in the UK, alongside rock and roll, in the UK at the time Brian May was growing up, and he would have been hearing people like Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball in the singles charts.

Just to be clear - there are no clarinets, trombones, trumpets, or any wind instruments on this track. Just guitar covering all those sounds. Some of it recorded one note at a time with volume swells. It's a stunning achievement, but the effect is so realistic that it is often overlooked!

Another guitar inspiration song. Later on in bands when someone would say “ this song needs a cello, or a flute, a moog synth solo, birds,” whatever. I could say I can do that. Thanks to Brian and later Belew.

This song always reminds me my favorite movie: "A Clockwork Orange" because there is a short scene with the sound track "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper" what create the same atmosphere in my opinion. Beside that I like this song because it once again shows their stylistic width.

Some people (I'd say very few people) compared the eclectic and musical variety of the Queen to the Beatles' music, I found that this song is something I can combine to some crazy Beatles crazy and funny stuff on White Album for example but here Queen were so moderate and thoughtful, no crazy at all, I mean it's fun, it's just an enjoyable song. (It can be a very good tune for the Snow White and the seven dwarves, which I love very much!!)

I played this song once to a friend of mine who's a huge lover of New Orleans jazz. He thought it was a great band playing!
Never once; not even with his extensive knowledge of the genre, did he ever consider that it was all done by one guy. On a guitar!

  • @Yaktahbay

In your lyric run-through you skipped "All through the years, in the end, it appears there was never really anyone but me". Given its place in the narrative right after B and Sally parted company, this is obviously intended to convey deep meaning, but I never was completely sure how to interpret it. I guess it means that despite his attempts to build relationships, he never quite got his dad's message and that has left him utterly alone.

And so we take a detour from the opera to the old-time music hall. Queen were never less than good fun. This isn't Queen at their rockiest but it doesn't outstay its welcome and points to their versatility, humour and intelligence.

In the apparent absense here of jfergs --- Oh jeez!!! - sorry to everyone who has commented here - all of you obviously love this. - I was going to say this is part of the bad legacy of the (Paul McCartney) Beatles but someone commented 'Granny Music. Love it' hmm!!. The Beatles were pretty damned good (I do not want to deny it) but their influence should have ceased at their demise. Instead every mainstream bands in the 70's had to prostrate themselves to them. As for the dixieland instrumentation - well there was one snippet that did sound like a clarinet. It's Brian May on guitar (fine guitarist yes - and a good bloke) but don't get silly.

Everyone likes different music, Brian was / is, a huge Beatles fan. They were one of his biggest influences. Paying homage to music That shaped him. Which he, & many others. Love / have loved. Is just as valid. As your expression of dislike. As long as you stop short of. Suggesting the work / art, & it's influence. Should have ceased. Simply because. You personally. Are not a fan. That is mighty orange of you. AKA...Trumpian Inflated Ego's Disease. Be careful. It can turn quickly. Into. Ignorant Orange Turd Syndrome. If left unchecked.

The ending solo section still mystifies me today, and I wonder why more guitarists haven't really taken what May started and ran with it. Nobody did it or does it like Queen.

Probably because it’s not just getting a trombone sound it’s also playing a trombone part, along with all the other instruments all together and making it swing baby.
      Pert near impossible…
