      what caused the increase in price of a7c? It's been $1.5k for at least a month (when i started tracking it). I would have loved to purchase it then when it was $1.1k.

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před měsícem +1

      You're right actually - not sure what has caused that increase! It's maybe the release of the Fujifilm X100VI (and the lack of availability of that camera). The a7C is an excellent alternative for street photography at a much more reasonable price, so possibly that! Hopefully it settles back down to the same price again soon!

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the kind comment! If you want more of an all rounder lens then I would recommend looking at something like the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, or the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8. The version 1 of the Tamron (there is now a G2 version too) can be picked up on MPB second-hand for around £500-600. The Sigma can be picked up for £640-670. The Sigma is a decent amount smaller than the Tamron, so might be the better choice if you are looking to travel with the a7C. If you are looking for primes, then the 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a great lens for portraits and can often be picked up for under £400 - I made a video about it here: czcams.com/video/6SnTPtVSPLU/video.html. I hope this helps a bit!

    I think it matches well with the pancake 16-50 zoom kit lens for compactness. 3.5" (88.9 mm) front of the lens to the back viewfinder.

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před 5 měsíci

      Yeah, agreed in terms of compactness, but I would prefer to have a fast prime on my camera than the kit lens to be honest. That's just my personal preference though!

    Bought my a7c 5 days ago used for 1050€ and a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 for 400€. many reviewers complain about the lack of function buttons or the small viewfinder. yes, the evf in the a7iii is significantly larger, but since i switched from the 77m2 from 2014, i didn't notice it negatively. i once held a 7iii to my eye in the store, yes, but i prefer the smaller body for street photography. with the a77ii everyone ran away with the a7c i hardly stand out and i am hardly noticed. with the a7c i can assign the wheel and all the buttons on the back to my preferences, even the REC button is freely selectable. And the AF tracking is brilliant for street.

      @arranpbrown  Před 2 měsíci

      That's an excellent deal - I'm definitely keen to pick up the Tamron at some point, or possibly the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8. And yes, I agree with your points about the a7C - it is a lot less conspicuous, especially for street photography, which is excellent! Thanks for the comment!

      Yes! Sure, I'll have a think about a video on that. I think that might be helpful to some people as SLOG 3 can be a bit of a pain to use with 8-bit footage if you don't have your settings dialed in correctly, but it is still usable and you can achieve some nice results from my experience. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Probably a 35mm tbh - it's another standard focal length that is often used for street photography and looks really good in my opinion! You could go for Sony's 35mm f1.8 lens, or if you're on a bit of a tighter budget, you could try Samyang's 35mm f1.8, which is quite a bit cheaper. Full disclosure - I haven't tried either of those lenses, but if I was into street photography then that's probably where I would start personally. Hope this helps!

  • @tomirwinphoto
    @tomirwinphoto Před 6 měsíci +1

    Nice review and while the positive comments you’ve made about this camera are valid the better “BARGAIN in 2024” by far for roughly the same price would be a used a7III. The compactness of the a7c is made possible by the removal of the a7III’s full size EVF and replacing it with a tiny, difficult to view rangefinder type eye piece that makes tracking moving subjects or even seeing the focus point more difficult. With a lens on both cameras the “compactness” is lost on all but the pancake kit lens as the size/weight difference with lens is minimal. The a7c lacks external buttons of the a7III needed for adjusting important features without diving into the menu. It doesn’t even have a front control dial required for adjustments shooting in Manual. The a7c shutter had to be redesigned to shrink the body resulting in it losing the 1/8000 shutter speed often used for improved bokeh with fast glass. And for paid work the lack of dual card slots is a risk to be avoided. And finally, sales volume of the a7III dwarfed that of the a7c providing for far more used a7III cameras for sale.
    Your experience may be different but having owned both (still own an a7III) I prefer both the ergonomics and performance of the a7III.

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před 6 měsíci +1

      All fair points! I personally love having the fully articulating screen on the A7C though, which is something you don't get on the A7 III. Also, I don't have any need for dual card slots to be honest, so that's not really a problem for me. The viewfinder is a bit small and isn't the best, but I definitely haven't found it to be a deal-breaker, personally. I think it all depends on how you use the camera, and they are both good options, just for different users! Thanks for your comment! 😁

I often put a 35 1.4 on one and an 85 1.4 on the other shooting combat sports and I can't really tell the difference. Suggestion - should you have the chance give the a7III a try. Do you feel that buying used camera bodies is good?

    • @arranpbrown
      @arranpbrown  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think it's totally fine as long as you buy it from a reputable source like MPB or a camera shop. As long as the place you buy it from vets the units appropriately then you should be fine. Fundamentally, as long as the sensor is in perfect condition and the rest of the camera is in good working order, you are going to achieve exactly the same results as you would with a brand new camera. It's just up to you whether you want to pay £/$2-300 more to get a nice, brand new body. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment! 👌

    “ An absolutely cracking deal in 2024.” I hope so. I just purchased one last week. I also purchased the Sony 35/2.5 lens. I couldn’t wait for the Fuji X100VI and canceled my order. I don’t want to wait a year or two for my next camera.
    I do street photography and video clips. I’m not too keen on the flip out screen. When the screen is flipped out the camera is more noticeable and awkward to use. Good for videographers. Not so good for photographers. I’m not amused that this body has only one wheel so I have to use the scroll wheel on the back to control the aperture. This has been corrected in the A7Cii but that doesn’t help me. I understand the IBIS isn’t stellar. It is OK for photography but less so for video.
    I value small and lightweight gear. That is the main attraction for me to check out the A7C. I want to experience full frame to see if I can notice the difference in image quality between full frame and APSC. I’m glad to see there are some small lenses to use on this body. Some Sony and 3rd party lenses are too large and heavy. More will be revealed. I also want to experience Sony autofocus.
    I’m setting the camera up. Going through the Sony menus and submenus is not fun. I’m challenged finding the features I want. Also, there is a difference between Fuji and Sony nomenclature.
    I’m hoping I will enjoy this body as much as you.

      Thanks for the in-depth comment and for sharing your thoughts. Hopefully you like the camera - I agree with a lot of things you said, especially regarding the IBIS, lack of physical dials for changing settings, and the menus being convoluted. Unfortunately no camera is going to be perfect for everyone, but I personally really like the A7C, despite it's quite obvious flaws! I think the A7C II is even more compelling as they fixed a lot of the issues with the original A7C, but the price of the OG A7C just makes it such a good deal now I think. I hope you enjoy your experience with it!

  • @CaleMcCollough
    @CaleMcCollough Před 17 dny

    You're not just getting a "crop factor" with APS-C lenses, they are literally designed to have a different focal plane. If you stick a full frame lens on an APS-C camera and walk back to the same equivalent focal length, the full frame lens will be softer due to the affect of light diffusion similar to f/22 because you are only using the center of the lens. The APS-C lenses are designed to use the entire lens, so it's not fair to say the difference is the trivial crop factor math in your head.
