Sleeping In The Back Of a Defender - Stealth Camping

- This is my bed setup which allows me to sleep in the back of my Land Rover Defender 110. I have been travelling around Australia for 9 months and this setup has worked extremely well for me. The bed platform is a simple two piece marine ply and aluminium channel construction. It is strong enough to support me and can fit up to 2 people in the back of the Defender. Setup only takes one minute once I pull in to camp. Far superior to trying to set up a tent or roof top tent after a long days driving.

Pick a date. Live Your Somedays, Today.
I saw the expedition centre pop-top roof conversion video before this one and can understand the reasons for the extra happiness, the smiles, and the frequent standing up in that video. Keep living awesome every day!
A nice setup. A short wheel base Land Rover Wolf ( MIL) is a different sort of challenge for sleeping. You have to lower the tailgate and place a board
over the gap. Works ok.
Great job Brett, get home safely and plan your next adventure for us to follow. Keep em coming.
+crazytrutas Thanks mate. Will have to start editing the backlog of footage once I get home.
Thoroughly enjoyable Brett, appreciate the time you put into your filming and editing. A great setup you have there and the Defender just can't be faulted as a long-range go-anywhere tourer. Happy Travels mate! Warren.
+NQExplorers Thanks Warren.
Good work. I did something similar to my Jeep TJ. It's only a two door so its a bit tighter. I like the idea of the nets.
Living the dream dude!
Hello Brett, just found your channel and enjoying all your stories. I travel a lot by myself in qld . Love my stretcher bed and swag under the awning great in hot weather.
Welcome mate!
Great vid as always very informative keep them coming Brett.
+jaymac57 Thanks mate
Windowsocks seem a wonderful invention!
Good job.
great simple job mate,,, but i cant help thinking a simple clampet roof tent would have given more comfort lol
Nice one as usual Brett. A lot of the time when I visit national parks there are signs saying 'Don't leave anything in your car'. Have you ever been snoozing and some sticky fingers has come along and got a surprise?
+El Rey Not yet mate. I did have a couple Dingos pounce on my rear door attempting to get at my garbage bag, along with one very large possum which climbed up on top of my rear spare wheel. Though one night someone was trying to break in but was probably just another possum crawling around on the car.
Very good setup. Good work with the video. Should make more.
great stuff mate. Thank you.
65kg....that's one of my legs! Nice vid mate.
Nothing a few extra struts couldn't fix. Thanks.
I wish you'd make more videos.
Awesome ... thumbs up... thx for the upload ....
Wonderful video full of great information. I'm leaning very heavy on getting an older Land Rover Discovery or Defender for overlanding. Cheers from Canada. I just subscribed :)
Thanks mate. All the best with your vehicle search.
Great video! I wish we have more serious off road/overland vehicles here in the States. All we've got are Jeep Wranglers...
Great vid, sorry for the late post as I just found your site today. Have you thought about installing a small 12v fan on the interior to help on those hot nights and to help keep the bugs off of you while you sleep?
yes mate did think of it but didn't find one I liked with a low enough current draw. I'll pick one up though before my next big adventure. Thanks.
Love your videos i have 2 land rover series 3 s a 4 door and a 2 door which i will be making a bed set up in it,i will be installing my solar panels and pull out kitchen i made keep up the great videos i am buying a diesel defender very soon as well
+Farmer2492 Thanks mate. All the best with your fit out. Enjoy your upcoming adventures.
Hi Brett the early land rovers i have are on club plates one is a 1972 the other is a 1980 i want to get a 1991 defender diesel i even thought about the roof conversion you were showing on your last video, but 10 grand it would be just a quick to make a good set up in the rear, you said you were heading home in a couple of weeks,i live in Ballarat Victoria did you pass through there on your way round.keep up the great videos i enjoy them after a hard days work on the farm.regards Anthony.
Glad to see the setup worked so well... It was well planned ... Anything you'd change?
+Matt Allen Basically no. Everything has worked perfectly except for one internal light bar which I kept hitting my back on. I pulled that out after a few months. I'm pretty darn happy. Will have a full video in a couple weeks of my impressions of the build.
+Roaming The Outback Looking forward to it Brett... Maybe LED strip lights next time?
awesome
Nice vid and good tips, for someone fresh
I thinking about buying some 4x4, for longer trip- russia - and for the momemt think deffender is simply the best
Ps. I hate dislike button guys. If they dont like the content, why they dont go somewhere else? They just leave this stink here with us, when they go... its really sad :)
Thanks Adam. Enjoy your future planning and trips. Plenty to see out there.
Looks so cool 😍
+Charlie Watson Thanks. It all came together really well.
great job like vids that give me idea's
+Mrbadger “MrBadger” Martin Thanks mate. Plenty more vids in my Defender playlist.
Travelling for 9 months ! Where can I get a fuel tank like that ?
:) what plenty room, are you kidding?? Your head touches those God damn nets hanging down.. Hahahahaha
Brett..... How does your setup work in bad weather (rain, etc)? Would a Rear roll out awning help at all?
+Rob McDowall Hey Rob. I've shot a new video for you which will be uploaded today.
hello there Roaming the outback, just out of interest what netting did you use and how did you fasten it to your landy's roof ? :)
bought it off ebay. Search for car cargo netting or storage netting etc. Just screwed it up into the roof ribs and some loops on the inner channel.
Nice to hear from you are there any things on the car you would change. Sorry for my terrible english
+Christof Fetscher Thanks. Basically no. Everything has worked really well.
That is cool
Hi bro, have you ever thought about pulling a trailer? more storage, less weight on the truck? I'm thinking of building a lightweight aluminium trailer...cheers
For a solo traveller a trailer is too risky for me to handle on my own. Would have gotten into big trouble and no one around to help me. My car doesn't have much power either to tow alot. I prefer less gear anyway.
Nice video Brett- I am a proud owner of a 200 tdi 90. All the best.
Thanks mate.
ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਜੀ
Thanks mate
What are the measurements for that rhs and angle metal thank you
Would sleeping with your feet toward the rear of the vehicle be possible? 2 additional door socks would provide even more cross ventilation for such a configuration...
Yes. The only reason I didn't was my fridge is down that end and I would of had my head next to it. The hum probably would have been annoying.
Ah yes the fridge... I had not considered that :)
where did you get the insect screen from?
ebay. czcams.com/video/Zjhok4XevxQ/video.html
Would blue LEDs or a blue filter work in your rear floodlights for minimising insect attraction, I've seen before where blue light doesn't attract them as much ? Any idea?
I've never actually though of that. Would be a very interesting experiment to try next time out. Thanks for the idea!
Is that a mounted reverse camera on the back? The ones I've tried seem to have the vision blocked by the spare wheel :(
+KHGuitarFreak1988 Yes mate. I found although the rear wheel blocks a small part of the frame when angled right down I still have a good view of everything from corner to corner.
Really nice video and love the passion in your eyes.
Few notices, though;
Would it be hard to replace the metal in a door frame with alloy to gain lighter construction?
Other notice comes from the backside netting. What we did in our Defender (mainly because the mozzies and no-see-ems in NT,) we installed a netting to the rear side sliding windows and to the back of our heads a D battery powered soft-blade ventilator to move the air around. Soft blades because of the safety and lack of noise.This setup was a champ! Kept the air circulation going and helped us to get necessary sleeping hours even at the hottest nights. Fan looked something like that;
www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Solution-X-Large-LED-Light-Tent-Fan.aspx?pid=338128#Recommendations
Since we had dual-batteries set up with 600W power inverter, we used rechargeable D batteries, so we wouldn't put too much strain over environment to buy new batteries every time we run them empty. Fully charged batteries gave us 2 full nights of nice sea breeze.
Also, my thought would be, to use netting on side windows compared to opening the whole back door, would give you some more discretion and less curios eyes, when sleeping in more public sites.
All the best and happy camping,
Markus.
+mqsism Hey Markus. I guess changing your door frames wouldn't be that difficult. The outer skin just peels off the metal frame. You would need to be handy with an alloy welder and ensure the new frames are strong enough. I did go looking for a fan like yours but something that was 12v powered, but most drew too many amps to add the extra load to my battery. Your system seems pretty good. Thanks
Does it have to be the 4 door version for this to work, I'm looking at a two Defender and I'm guessing my legs would stick out the back of it?
A 110 4 or 2 door wagon/van works. Some people have achieved it in a 90 as well with the boards extending up to the front dash. A 130 may not have a cabin long enough??
Where do you store your matress if it is not in the back? Or is it in the back all the time?
When travelling its in the back all the time.
Is that a reversing camera at the top middle?
Yes mate. Installation here if interested. czcams.com/video/IL3xMd8oFgo/video.html
great, thanks!
Do you venture into the middle of Australia? I am an American who has never been Down Under.
Yes, headed up through the centre. Still a lot more of country to see.
What time of year do you prefer to travel around?
Jefff Earth is flat and nobody is living down under!
is that HF antenna functional, or decorative?
+Christopher Schroeder It works!. It was my primary means of communication during my trip around Australia as I don't have a satphone and mobile phones are useless outside of towns.
Nice. What do you use as a radio?
KD8QDZ
I run a Codan NGT AR HF radio
I have seen these antennas before but who makes them?
Is there a reason you didn't go with a roof tent?
It's big heavy takes time to set up every day and reduces my ability to park in undercover parking when visiting town shopping centres. Setting up and packing down 300 nights would get tiring. My set up meant within 60 seconds I could climb into the back during any weather conditions and go to sleep. Simplicity :-)
Roaming The Outback very valid points!
what about snakes and spiders?
+Annie J. I had no problems with either inside. Kept the doors closed most of the time.
How long do you plan on traveling?
+Espen Birkeland I had 12 months off and have been on the road for the last 9. Decided to head home a little early to get some new projects underway. All my blog and updates are on www.roamingtheoutback.com Thanks.
+Roaming The Outback wow 12 months? How fast the time runs
How much you pay for your defender
+ben learmonth I bought it for $13000. Spent another $20000AU odd to set it up the way I want. Thanks.
0:07 he's been sleeping in the back of the Defender - the size of that hat could of kipped in that instead!
+edward charles We need big hats in Australia to fight off the dingoes and crocs. In a survival situation we can fill it with water and filter it to drink or carry roots, nuts or seeds. ;-)
Roaming The Outback Can't be that dangerous otherwise everyone would wear one, as opposed to the odd few! I always remember Bush Tucker Man having one the shape and size of a Victorian mop bucket!
haha... yes, but only Les Hiddins is legendary enough to wear something that big!
Roaming The Outback Well give it time and maybe you will be too! :) :)
How tall are you mate?
180cm
Get a 12 volt fan... you'll thank me later
+Gibbet Hoskins Looked around at a few but didn't find one I liked with a low enough current draw. For the next trip I'll get one.
Roaming The Outback yeah they draw a bit so need to be on a timer or something so you can just fall asleep. I just have mine on for 30 mins or so then switch it off manually.
Super late reply, but when I was sleeping in my car last summer in the American South (hot and humid), I bought a USB fan and a power pack at a gas station. There was no trouble running the fan all night long with that setup, then I'd charge it with the cigarette lighter during the next day's drive. It made a huge difference.
Estupid idea
