- Some people on the internet talk about the Evolve GTR Electric Skateboard locking up and. throwing them off it. I just had an experience where I was thrown off mine and broke my collarbone. In this video I go over the rumors and some facts and what happened to me.
I still love this board and recommend them.

One of my friends rides a GTR and he had a very similar issue. He did not injure himself as badly as you did, but he def messed himself up. It was that break button on top, he accidentally tapped it and he flew off his board. My board uses the thumb wheel that you push forward to go or back to break. Far more intuitive and far less chance of user error.
My other one used one like yours.
Dang, Sean, I'm so glad to hear and see the docs got you patched up! Now the is a video for the record books. I hope Evolve works with you on getting a firmware update for the board controller. Yeah, we've ALL been complacent in our lives, and sometimes there are consequences. I'm also glad to hear you're still heading out to SoCal to work on your new venture. @Evolve Skateboards The first boards were losing signal and were very dangerous. i found many videos about it, but they refuse to help. This is a very common problem with first boards. Now they use Bluetooth. But they did not make the possibility of upgrading for old boards. All comments about this are deleted. I was also thrown off the board because the signal was lost.
I have not deleted any comments about this.
In order to help with my experience with gtr 1.
1- brake problems happened to me, why? I pull my motor wire a bit out instead the charger wire . Few moments later first fail. Happy end but… 2* time same thing same problem same end . Yes I’m luck AF.
2- this happened after a board service they let the wires longer than usual and holders doesn’t work well anymore, my contacts are semi twisted instead touching the board nice and fit. I solved this later on.
3- Most important. Learn to brake with your! Board in black out situation before the situation. I drove my board 365 al days and this happened 2 times in same week,
Last thing: check your board again after every service it’s your butt on top so don’t take any risk.
PD: just one time motor brake stop. Due one of my motors failed after due long term problems with corrosion. I knew this will die , even I asked to evolve if this could cause any problem in case it die , they said no no problems just the motor, DSC died too! So 3 times the engine cost and one week done and a unexpected fly of the board in safe place.

Hey brother, exactly the same thing happened to me with my GTR a couple of years ago. I was going about 30kph going in a straight line on the road. I went to adjust my shirt behind me using my controller hand and accidentally tapped the brake somehow. Because I wasn’t expecting it I came straight off the front and my hands took the bulk of the fall. Thankfully no broken bones. Your story resonates with me closely!!
I might have to have the plate removed and go through a second surgery. Sucks indeed.

At 42k subs I would think a lot of board manufacturers would love to throw a board at you . As for your thoughts on the accident. I've not had a go on an evolve yet and the reason was the controller. I just feel that a scroll wheel is far more intuitive than two totally separate switches. What you described is what I feared . What happens if you engage both . And that sounds more plausible than a disconnect issue. Try ownboard Zeus pro . I personally love my Tynee Explorer. Hope your back to normal soon .
Yeah. I’m a bit surprised they would not want me to do a follow up to secure my faith in their product.
when you engage both, brakes take priority, def the way it should work. i've messed with some evolve controllers settings enough to make me love it. weaker break pull, stronger throttle pull. fucking thing is a rocket and will never throw you even if you tap the break. almost had one moment like this back when i didn't mess with throttle/break values though.

Personally I think remotes that require two separate digits to operate throttle & brake are a major design fail. Having the ability to accidentally touch the brake & have it override the throttle is dangerous. The possibility of throwing riders off their boards and companies brushing it off as user error. Thumb wheel throttle/brake or push/pull triggers are impossible to apply throttle & brake at the same time. Cars have accelerator & brake operated by the same foot to only apply one at a time. Same with motorcycles throttle & brake. Shutting off the throttle before applying brake.
Thank you. Even if the brake is meant to be touchy on the gtr it’s a bad design. I just test Road the Hadean ANd they fixed that. If they didn’t think it was bad then the Hadean would brake the same way.

Yeah Evolve remotes suck balls. They’ve had this stupid philosophy from day one that using your thumb for throttle is too difficult… based on zero empirical research and despite every other manufacturer using thumb throttle with no issues whatsoever.
So then evolve had to come up with the even dumber idea that brake and throttle require two different fingers and they can be activated at the same time but the brakes override throttle. You should never be able to go straight from full throttle into brakes, it should require you to turn throttle off first THEN brake, it’s mind bogglingly stupid.
I will never buy Evolve again after their Bamboo GTX nearly killed me in 2017. Shitty company filled with people who are not too bright.

It seems nuts that the faster the speed, the more sudden the brakes, seems like it should be the opposite. Here's hoping everything heals quick and proper, and that your screws don't come loose! 😎
I agree, it’s very backwards
Summer Temps low battery 15% full throttle. The ecu kicked into eco mode, sending me forward (ran) till I stopped. The board ecu was really hot, and so were the motors. Anyways, my knees were in pain for 2 months, and so was the bottom of my feet.

It still annoys me that Evolve boards arent able to reverse or brake to a complete stop and maintain their position when on an incline instead of just slowly rolling down.
I support Evolve and ride a GTR Bamboo, I just wish they implemented these motor functions that other eskate brands have.

I have a meepo still. A wheel for it as well.
Always wear gear! It's not about your riding skills, it's about your board or whatever you're riding and how much you trust it not to fail at any point. Also, unforeseen obstacles caused by other people or some external forces.

Wearing safety gear, while essential for protection, can result in a limited range of view and restricted mobility. For example, helmets and face shields can obstruct peripheral vision, making it difficult for rider to see potential hazards around them and lower situational awareness.
@@UNLISTEDWEB no you should always ride carefully. Safety gear is there if an accident occurs. People who want to take risks have nothing to do with safety gear.
As someone who's had a GTX bamboo for about... 5-7 years? If you need the right date I'll check. The only ever issue I had was then the battery started losing power, like 70% capacity of the thing or even less. When I suddently accelerated quite hard/fast from 0-60 quite hard it would just die on me and I would have to run off the board and in one instance I was injured. However after getting the battery replaced I have never experienced this issue. I think it was a voltage/amp issue or w/e not sure on the technical terms.
Seems it’s sort of hit or miss on the people who have an issue with the seizure of the wheels. that’s crazy. You’re able to get 60 on an old evolve. Mine would only go about 21 or 22
@SeanOzz I had the street wheels though does this only happen on the larger wheels?
The brake lock up seems to be hit or miss from all the research I’ve done. Some seems to be a mishap by hitting the brake and it not being a smooth transition like the Haden is. Others seem to have more what happened to me. Just a sudden lock up out of nowhere. I loved this board so much till that day. Then lost all trust in it and sold it.
Wow brother, praying for your quick recovery! I admire that you take personal responsibility (even tho not 100% sure) instead of immediately blaming a product. And you also lay out a good case for improvements they can make for increased safety. Hope they listen to you, I would LOVE to get one of these boards after seeing you ride all the time...IF that sudden braking issue at higher speeds is corrected! ;-) Heal up my friend!!!
I went by there manufacturing place here in California yesterday, the new board the Hayden solve the breaking issue. It really makes no sense they wouldn’t update the firmware of the old one electronically somehow to do the same
I ended up getting
the Carbon Gtr and wow did they ship it fast. Rode it
for 2 days and loved it, especially the range. On the
third day I was going full speed and the remote
disconnected, the board went into safety mode, and
sent me like 15 feet but I was able to outrun it
somehow. Then it wouldn't reconnect after I tried
everything. I contacted Evolve and they tried to help
me but nothing worked. Sent it back for a return.
How are these issue that common. Rode a boosted board stealth for 2 years and never had any serious issues.
Interesting, I’ve purposely disconnected my remote and it just toast to a slowdown. That is a really strange thing that it would lock up with a remote turn it off. Definitely shouldn’t do that. That’s definitely not a safe way for the board to react if the remote turns off. I almost ran this one off, but sadly I did not the end result hurt like hell. Thanks for sharing

That is also why i wear a beyound riders motercyle jacket with elbopads shoulder pads and a spine protector and also wear a motorcross helmet i cruise around 25 to 30mph and i love my jacket i did a full front flip wip out off road going 30 mph and i did not feel a thing besides my knees a bit but not terrible
I ended up buying a motorcycle after selling this board.
Two months ago, I had a fall at 34 km/h. The remote control simply stopped responding, I let go of the throttle and the board kept maintaining its maximum speed. I tried braking and the remote didn't respond, suddenly it stopped without me pressing anything, and a second later I was lying on the ground. Fortunately, I only suffered (not so small) abrasion wounds on my arm. Now I'm trying to give it another chance but only as long as I have the new Phaze remote control, which apparently has Bluetooth 3.0 and is less delicate than the previous one.

I almost fell off going 45kmph on my gtr downhill after braking but I managed to stabilise the board lol I was lucky

It doesn't seem logical to me that, at higher speeds, the brakes aren't gradual, at least on the default setting.

I ended up not chooseing evolve or any other brand i ended up going with titanx 4wd from boneboard
It has been amazing but it also suffers a little bit from a motor kickback not necesarly breaks but it dose have a kick back sometimes ocasionaly and.if ur not exspecting it can make you wipe out

I remember taking a dive in 1982 on a cheap fibreglass skateboard that developed CRAZY speed wobbles on the steepist hill in town. I don't recommend it. There was no way to run it out but fortunately nothing broke, just the worst road rash of my life. We're still boneless at age 12 right?

Same happened to me. When i got to the board the blue light was flashing, remote was on but no longer connected. Brake just locked on me. I wasn't prepared but slow and lucky enough that it threw me into the air as if i jumped and was able to run it off. Worst electronics.
Glad you were able to run it off. Wish I had been going just a little slower so I could have.
@@SeanOzz that's a really rough injury. Brutal. I know the other brakes thing you talk about. You sum it up perfectly. While it's not ideal I can live with that. It's the motor controller issues that are really or can be dangerous. Don't see much about evolve anymore in any of the Facebook groups.
After a year sleeping on it. I can not picture how my brakes got tapped so I really think they just locked up. Which sucks.

I have no idea. I was hauled away in an ambulance. Couldn’t even push off the ground to stand up without all kinds of pops and crunch sounds.

I was. But this morning I woke and it hurts like hell all of a sudden
I recently had a connection issue with my remote on the hadean. I'd noticed sometimes that when i accelerated after coasting that the board would not respond and id have to release the throttle and re engage it for it to work again. Didnt bother me too much but i was concerned that the board might reconnect as i was holding the throttle down much further than necessary. This hasn't happened but almost immediately after this i was accelerating when the board cut out and i was sent off the front. Luckily, i was going slow enough that i ran it out, but it completely eroded my confidence in the board. I still ride it but only at lower speeds and i never accelerate hard which is a shame because i now can't ride to the boards potential because i dont trust it.
If i want to send it i ride my bajaboard and wear pads and helmet

They definitely have their faults. I have the atrax and the ground clearance on the 8 inch wheels is too small. Not a deal breaker for me as I basically use it as a commuter board but I've taken on mountain bike tracks and it does limit it. When I first got it i had 10 inch wheels on it which solved the ground clearance but i was contacting the tyres with my feet during turns as the deck length is quite short. The steering dampers are of poor design in my opinion. Atrax has bushes that aren't as nice as the adjustable springs on the bigger board and they vibrate loose, so I put some Locktight on the screws and run them as loose as possible for maximum maneuverability.
In terms of high speed stability and comfort on rough terrain, I've never ridden another board like it.
For the money though there are better options. Looking back ID rather have bought a cheaper mountain board or just gone all out and got the big 4wd bajaboard.

Great video glad that you're on the mend. Sean you should turn on the Super Thanks so you can earn money from the videos. I've fallen off my skateboard many times as a teenager but never broke any bones just skin rash on knuckles and elbows.

R1 remote is flimzy crap but there is no way to hit brake by accident
I actually was thinking about that. If I bumped my leg the brake pull is the opposite of how I’d hit my leg. So that leads me to believe it froze. Which is total shit.
Land like that on your shoulder again and you'll be in trouble.
You might want to switch to sky diving instead. Probably safer.
I was told I could remove the plate in a year or so if I want.
@@SeanOzz I had mine taken out once everything grew back. Although, I fatigued the first plate and it broke- had to be replaced... just a heads up for you.
Make sure you keep it moving so you don't get atrophy or lose range of motion, but don't push it too hard at first or you'll be back on the table.
A good PT can help you, but when it comes down to it, basically it is up to you to do the required work for a faster and healthier recovery.

I'm a skydiver, wouldn't recommend doing it with a jacked up collarbone.
I got my evolve gtr back in 2017, it threw me off randomly at around 20%, I remember it took the fun out of wanting to ride my board :( been wanting to buy another board but unsure if I want to go with evolve after this issue
I sold mine as I just didn’t trust it anymore.

I went and test road the haden in a follow up video. The brake was smooth over 18mph. I have been tempted but on a few groups I am in I’ve heard the haden has locked up. So I’m not sure if it’s got the same issue or if it’s user error. It did ride smooth though.

Yes. It’s a trigger u can pull slow.
Under a certain speed they work properly. Over a certain speed they are very extreme even with a slight pull.

@@SeanOzz we use armored jackets and shirts, they have shoulder, elbows and back padding, it helps alot. I've broken 2 triple eight helmets the past 6 months from spilling, wouldn't be writing this if I didn't wear them. I also at times ride without helmets but never on my CZcams videos or media. There are thos kids looking at us as heroes and like to do the same. My Sponsors require helmets for this purpose. "Kids" pls dont take this in a negative way🙏🏽 just constructive criticism. I love the evolve before my brake lock with 35 km speed.I ride 7 months every day . I do not know what happened and evolve do not take responsibility they even do not want to check the board the worst customer support I will buy different electric skate bacause I do not believe to evolve. I will buy lacroixboards. The brake is lock because my tires is slide .Never my tires slide when I hit the brake .
I sadly sold mine as I couldn’t trust it anymore. I wish I had been filming like I normally do when it happened so I’d know 100%.

If you have no skateboard experience I’d buy a cheap non electric first and just push around to learn your balance at slower speeds. Never say never though and we only live once.

If you go Evolve I’d go for that and not the gtr. I’ll never ride a gtr again.

A little advice: when riding your board, always bend your front leg slightly. It will give you better stability, especially when you shift your weight onto your front leg. This will reduce the chance of speed wobbles and increase your chances of running off the board safely at higher speeds.
Also, always recalibrate your remote after it has hit something.... GTR doesn't have strong brake engagement compared to GT. I ride in NYC, and I had to bail from my GTR several times because I could not stop fast enough. I miss the GT brakes and acceleration curve that literally throws you off the board.

Good advice for others who read it. I can’t run 20-22mph. lol. Sometimes you have to roll…. 😜
My gtr only has strong brake engagements after you break 17-18mph. Under that it’s buttery smooth. Works this way calibrated or not. U would have loved it. Just like the GT, toss ya off like ya hit a wall stopping the board at higher speeds. They fixed that on the Haden. 😊
