I test rode three bikes before making a decision, the Tiger, the VStrom, and the V85TT. I was impressed with the Tiger and liked it a lot, it was quick, light, and nimble. The VStrom was likewise light, quick, and nimble, but it just didn't make me want one after riding it. The V85TT was a bit heavier (although it carries it's weight well with a low centre of gravity), nimble, and not quite as quick as the other two with less power.
I went with my heart not my head and bought the V85TT. The Travel model had almost every extra I wanted as standard fitment and it was the only one with shaft drive. The engine character sold it for me, the engine and torque is lovely and just so comfortable to ride. After 11,000 miles I'm having more fun on this bike than any other I've owned.
hi, have you had any trouble, e.g. with the shaft drive overheating or anything else? I like the V85TT very much, but honestly am a bit hesitant bc of the italian brand.
@@alli333o I was exactly the same, I spent almost a year trying to convince myself I shouldn’t buy it because I’d never had a twin or an Italian bike. 🙂 But the test ride had sold it to me so it was inevitable I’d give in and get it. I’ve had no problems with it and I’m really glad I bought it. Buy a 21 onwards model as they have tubeless tyres, pre 21 had tubes tyres.
I like the V85TT, and it was my second choice after the Tuareg 660 that I bought. I think the V85TT would be a slightly better pavement tourer, and shaft drive is wonderful. I hope to do some distance touring and to get off the beaten path, and I feel that the Tuareg can go wherever the V85TT can go, but the Tuareg has a little extra off-road capability that could make the difference in a pinch. The V85TT is attractive and has character. I could even see moving to the V85TT if I get tired of chain maintenance.
Nice take, thanks
@@joeyshmoey8514 yes. chain kinda sucks. I like the guzzis but the weight of the Tuareg caught my eye. Shaft drive is probably heavy, the rear diff and all. I wish the Tuaregs came with a pannier package since I'm more interested in buying used and price difference is nominal. Tuareg wins suspension travel and ground clearance.
Have 9000 miles on my Norden Expedition and love it.
I’d be pleased with any on this list.
Ride and love what ya got! 🏍️💨
Well said. Cheers M8
Nice review and really cool you mentioned Guzzi in this class. It's well deserved 👌
Waiting for the next iteration of the Transalp 750 with double stacked, rally, headlight, tubeless tires, and cruise control.
Ah, yes! Forgot the air filter should be more accessible, also.
Could be a long wait for that.
This too, 100% second that!
Better buy a different motorcycle while you wait. Honda never, ever, update a model like the Transalp before 5 years (minimum) had passed since initial sales. Been there so not holding my breath.
Maybe we will get that for the 40th edition in 2027
Thanks for the great review, helpful.
The biggest miss for me is the Tenere explore edition with the small fuel tank. How did they not add 2 and 2 together?
The design of the Suzuki is heart soothing and will look good after years and what a bike it is.
Nice overview, you’ve shown that there are some really great bikes in this category, just depends on what you’re looking for. I spent about a year researching my next purchase, coming from an ‘08 VStrom 650. I wanted something lighter with a lower C.G., better suspension, tubeless, some electronic aides, easier air filter access (sorry, I don’t like removing the gas tank to get to the filter!) NOT needing more HP. I ended up buying a Taureg 660. We still have ice and snow on our roads and I can’t say too much about the Tuareg, but I can say that the quick shifter is amazing, especially for someone who likes to ride standing up. Looking forward to the spring thaw!
I actually just got a new to me 08 VStrom 650. Only 2400 miles when I purchased it from the original owner who kept it in his climate controlled garage all these years, it's absolutely mint!
I was not all too excited to find the air filter under the tank lol. Who thought that was a good idea?!
@@kyle1758 congratulations on the purchase! I love my 08’ VStrom 650 that I bought new. In 16 yrs the only issue I’ve had with the bike is the ABS unit has gone flakey. In recent years I’ve been interested in doing more double track riding and BDRs, and I found myself getting in over my head with the VStrom. Enjoy the bike!
Love the Honda Transalp. Had it for a weekend. On the Wishlist 😍
I bought it 3 weeks ago and it is a blast to ride. Quite comfortable on the road as well.
@@7erdogdu cool man, enjoy it
Got myself the Transalp last week, and it's waiting on the garage for the heavy rain to stop. I come from a V-strom 250 and a (old 2009) 650, and the plan was upgrading to the new 800DE, but after test driving both, and the CFMoto 800MT, the Tracer 700, and my father have the BMW GS850, the choice was pretty simple. I bought it with almost all extras I can get from Honda, so price wise it was way over the 10k. But I think, for my use, it was the right purchase.
No CC on the Transalp is an automatic no-no
@@CriticalRider you can get cruise control for 300 bucks so that’s really not an issue
@@TheZakkmylde no you can't
Why not the cfmoto ?
@@AndreGoncalvesvc The seller in the dealership was very convincing. Honda is a very reliable brand, and the new engine is very good also. The dealership were I bought the bike, Motoboxe in Porto, they sell Honda, Suzuki, KTM, CFMoto, Kawasaki, Benelli, MotoMorini, Husqvarna and some other chinese brands, and still he convinced me to go Honda. I only miss the cruise control, but other than that, I'm extremely happy.
Ducati has does it again! The Desert X is beautiful!!!
If I could only own one bike it would be one of these... great balance of capabilities for folks who want to ride on the street comfortably but still be able to deal with good quality dirt/seasonal roads and occasionally more challenging rough dirt roads.
The Moto Guzzi data you provided didn't even mention the fact it's the ONLY choice for non chain driven power in 'the smaller' category.
I swear most bike reviewers like licking their chains clean
If I had the doe ray me it would be the Desert X for sure. But leaning toward the Suzuki for bang for your buck.
The table is really helpful. It will be soo much more helpful if you can create a map of their power and torque curves
Very good point - power-to-weight ratios would also help here.
Brilliant, quick and informative video! You're beating Big Rock now! I would have to choose between a Tiger 900 GT PRO, the VSTROM 800 SE and the Desert X.
for my kind of riding long distance with some gravel thrown in I reckon either the transalp or even the 800RE might fit the bill. At 5'7" seat height is an issue, as is weight considering I travel with gear too.
Good review but would be nice to know what kind of warranty the bike comes with as well since it's included in the price. Also shows how much confidence the manufacturer has in the bike.
Nice video, thank you. Pity those versions of the Yamaha Tenere are not available here in the USA. All the best.
I enjoyed watching the video today too.
I hope to see another good video next time.
Have a nice day.👍
Current(2022) extremly satisfied Tiger owner. While I am sure I would enjoy the extra power and other changes. I simply feel no need to upgrade to the 24 model. I am quite content with what I have. But across the board the middleweight ADV bike segment may be the best one in terms of choices in all of motorcycling.
Are you suffering from engine heat and vibrations?
@@Yurii_Ko I know people have complained about the heat but I haven't really had a problem with it. Yes I can feel it but it never been even a slight issue. Granted if I had longer legs and they were farther forward as I sit it could be worse. The bars do have vibration but its tolerable, especially after I have gotten use to it.
@@dukenukem1682 how tall are you?
@@Yurii_Ko 5'9 with a 30 inch inseam.
@@dukenukem1682 thanks! I’m 176 cm and I’m choosing between tracer 9 gt and tiger 900 gt pro. What would you say?
This best bike for you is the bike that gets the best service and aftermarket support both at home and where you ride. My good friend and riding buddy is dumping his Tuareg as it spent way too much time in the dealership following their issues doing the routine service. Which is really too bad, as I enjoyed riding it when we swapped bikes.
Agree, We have an excellent Suzuki dealership on Oahu and I love the Vstrom 800!
Was really thinking about getting the Aprilia but
buying a Suzuki. D. E Reliability is the most important thing.
Just bought a Tuareg 2024. Very good handling and fun in the trails and sharper piloting on the road than I was expecting! And better comfort than the T7. Great sound and torque for a 660! Very happy
Well done sir
I really love the norden 901 but would be happy with almost any bike on the list the Honda transalp here in the states is lower on power and only comes in black color way which is very disappointing
T7 2020 + Öhlins YA818 & FKA114
Amazing bike.
As you can probably tell from my Avatar, I DO like a Ducati. But I'm thinking that they are kinda going for ridiculous prices these days. 15k for the base Scrambler-X is 3k more than the new Triumph, which is already near the top of the price list!
The Multistrada 1250 can go for 25k! And the servicing costs are eye watering!
I think i'd opt for either the Tiger 900 Rally Pro, or the Norden (the dash is probably the best out of all of the bikes featured).
Tiger - I have an 800 and the triple engine is sooo sweet.
I will be purchasing one here in the next few months I hope. I am leaning toward the Tenere 700 or the Transalp by Honda.
Last year i got the Guzzi V85 Guardia d'Onere, due too looks and charme - If i shout choose new in 2024 i maybe would pick BMW or the new Tenere Explore.
I have a T7 World Raid, highly recommend it
Great vid, It interesting to see the pricing on the bikes in the uk v Australia. There’s about 3 grand difference between Honda v Suzuki with Honda being cheaper and 8 grand differences between the Honda and Aprilia .
And we won't even discuss Yamaha's awful pricing ... 🤫🤫🤭🤭
Wish the Tuareg was discounted in the US!
I would add two motorbikes that will greatly change the motorcycle world. The CF MOTO 800 MT Explorer and the new VOGE 900 DSX. The first company produces for KTM and the second for BMW. The quality is at a very high level. Incomparable equipment for the price.
Cf Moto is too heavy unfortunately.
Agreed. Have ridden a few China models myself - the weight does have to get down a bit but the price points are much more sensible. For essentially the same thing.
@@srdjanmaksimovic1779 It's not too heavy. 231kg (without side box)
I have chosen the BMW F850GSA It is a 2023 model for $19500 Canadian dollars. It is fully loaded with all options on the bike. The only thing I asked to change is the aftermarket exhaust to the stock exhaust. I saved an extra $1300. Can't wait for the spring to arrive!
Hey! I have a question. How many months you're able to ride your bike in where you live so far?
@@mahmutsekman-ii8zmI live in Alberta Canada some years 6 months and some years 8 months. It all depends on when the first big dump of snow comes in October/November.
@@mahmutsekman-ii8zm Hi, well, after 7 months of winter here 4-5 months.
Great review of bikes, I ordered the Tuareg 660, Atreides black. I checked out a lot of different bikes but for the height and power, it made the best option for me. I have a dedicated dual sport so I was looking for something that could take me cross-country and so some basic off road adventuring. Given that I have an excellent local service representative, who actually owns a 660), figured I'd go with the bike I liked the most. It was b/w T7 and the 660 but the height ended up being the difference, along with the added electronics. Appreciate your insight on all these bikes, great to have options. Cheers
Atreides black looks awesome I owned one.. recently I installed the acerbis handguards in black/ red colour and looks even better 👌
Which one would you suggest between 850GS and 900 GT, as these are the only 2 options available in India?!
Transalp. That new engine it's a dream .
Many will not like it but, there's a motorcycle missing in the list. If it proves to be reliable and the specs true to what the company announces, the Kove 800X Super Adventure will be an success case like the Benelli TRK. The thing that really attracts me the more, it's the story behind the brand's founder, a passionate motorcyclist.
Thanks for the video! 🎉 I'm going to get a middleweight cruiser/ retro style bike, would be nice if you can do a video like this about these bikes ❤ Cheers!
Im still waiting for a transalp with DCT and cruise control…
Guess won’t come out until they release a new AT with already 120hp!
Until then I’ll stick with my desertsled
I want them all😂 truthfully I think the Vstrom continues to be best all around value for money but I'd take the BMW, looking like they hit the mark!
I would agree 100%, love the 800DE.
Seriously under-rated. Ours has been the best balanced bike I've ever ridden.
I want reliability over all else. The bike can be a great preformer, but if it leaves you stranded, what good is it?
So no ktm, BMW , triumph, ducati and Husqvarna for you then lol
@@timdeleij7105 For sure 👍🏻
@@timdeleij7105Honda baby
I have a particular issue…I am planning to ride from Manchester to Ljubljana in May and want a bike that suitable for that…but also great for touring the area once I’m here, (I live in Ljubljana now) and will tour (2 up) Italy for the next few years…looked at GS but it lacks road feel…any suggestions?
KTM adventure S or Ducati Multistrada
Try the new V85tt when it comes out in April - I bet you’ll love it.
How about f900 gs adv ?
tiger 900 rally
What do you think about 750gs bmw
You missed the F800GS which looks good and seems like great value for a BMW.
I really wish the USA got the top end models of the Tenere 700.
The Ducati Desert X looks amazing
Hmmm? I think it's kinda goofy.
But hey I can't criticize your taste in design.
Honda africa twin basically ruined every other dual headlight design for me.
Can’t wait for the day when all drive-by-wire bikes get cruise control as standard…kind of like cars(yeah I’m looking at you Honda/Transalp)
V-Strom DE in this list, instead of the Desert-X(Wich is not really middle)
They all look fun . But they all look heavy too. They could make a light weight high HP bike without all the extras . When dirt riding was starting out people would take stuff off to save weight , now its add add add
All of them are very heavy bikes. I don't know whether or not it's wet weight; if so, only 2 or 3 are acceptable as they weigh around 200-208 kg.
The main issue with the aprillia taureg in the US is no dealerships and the issue with the t7 is we don't anything other than the basic t7.. we don't get the 790 adventure ktm either..
Not true on the 790. Dork in the road just bought it a couple of days ago.
Waiting for KTM 990 Adventure R :)
How about doing a similar video on real everyday “middle weight” bikes rather than weekend warrior wheels.
Gotta go with the flashy, well advertised ones. Keep the industry ticking over ;) I like the Transalp but at 9k - nah it's just a bleedin' bike!
BMW fell off the radar for me, but the 900 GS will make me have to do some reading.
My 800 de is perfect for my style of riding! 85/15.
Oh, it does much more. Watch what OneTheBackWheel does with the 800DE.
Researched the shit outta our purchase for 4 months. Over the moon with our DE ... 💖💖💖
Is the Africa Twin not considered middleweights? I know its 1100cc but its similar HP, weight and offroad capable to the bikers on the higher spectrum of this list
Fair comment. The AT base model weighs about the same as the VStrom ... 👌
Desert X or Tenere are for me
Take a look at the Benelli TRK 702x a lot of bike for not much money .Best selling bike in Italy last year
Waiting for the F900GS!
800DE T7 or 790 im stuck between these 3 cant decide which 1 to buy
800DE
Hi... you missed the small brands with a big potential: how about the "GasGas 700 Dual Sports" & "Kove 450R Rally" . don`t follow the crowd, instead provide innovation , good luck ;-)
Aprilia Tuareg 660 is my choice
Mine ,too.I'd tested Tenere,Norden 901,Transalp...nope.
Tuareg is better.
Same here.
Until your bike is in a dealership 4 months out of the season
@@gsxrkz I owned an Aprilia Pegaso 650 with a Rotax engine from 1995 to 2009 and never had serious problems with it 🤔
That bmw looks tasty. Might swap out my 1090 but I doubt it
But the KTM is the Fugliest motorcycle ever made! I still need something that doesn't make me throw up when I look at it. Great review as always. Thank you.
What I choose? Kove 800X Pro …
If you want a boring bike, grab the Japanese brands. If you want an adventure, buy the Guzzi.
harsh?
Yo le puse un pedazo de carne cruda y funcionó un trayecto Barranquilla a Bogotá
T7 ticks all the right boxes for me.
Hmmm…I hear good things about the Transalp, especially the engine…but it needs some tweaks for the next gen updates like say…. 19 inch tubeless tire upfront and maybe some visual tweaks so it doesn’t look so plain.
Honestly, Transalp would've been the ideal bike if it had 19" front wheel and CC. This bike isn't made for hardcore off-road anyway, so 21" is wasted on this bike.
@@7erdogduI agree. It's more like a long range commuter than an adv.
I love my V-Strom 800DE but the headlight is genuinely terrible. The bike is a million times better than my Triumph 800XC. That bike had serious reliability issues.
I am surprised you haven’t put CF MOTO 800 MT Touring, best value for money.
Aprilia for the win!!
I go for Triumph 😎
HUSKY boy over here!
Cheers from PORTUGAL M8! >
Really like KTM line but with the price of things here might have to settle with a 2025 390adv
The best of all these bikes Is the VOGE DS900 X .
Indestructable and reliable: suzuki vstrom 800de.
Ktm 890 looks a good buy
I would prefer tenere 700
Come on, is anything over 200kg's really a middleweight?
Realistically what middleweight means is 500 - 900cc engine
Tiger 900 all the way.
No reservations. The best balance, in all parameters, is for Tenere. As always, Yamaha is neglected, but everyone knows, inside themselves, that it is always the best of all. 🤗
Where is the CF Moto 800?
Tuareg the best option no Doubt
CFMoto 800 MT is missing
Africa twin standard tubeless
apart from maybe the KTM they are still too big and heavy.... the market is missing a lot of revenue from us small guys.... for me Kove 800, lightweight and fast and with quality build....
Triumph Tiger 900 just looks sexy.
DR650 all the way!
XR650 . It used to be just XL 600 that was street legal. That's what I had and it was a blast . I could wheelie it for miles. I Got old and broken (& broke) so now on a 09 KLR 650 and it is heavy
BMW F900 Transalp looks more cooler and more adventure oriented than the actual Transalp
😅
890 and 790 ktm have reliability issues long term not good idea to buy for long distance travel /trans continental road or touring country . It great if day travel but never buy one
looks to me like the Tenere 700 is only available in USA in base trim. Why can't we have nice things? If I was there I'd get an old Africa Twin 650 or whatever they were. Another bike we never got here.
Out of this group I'd be most interested in the BMW, however I'd just spend the extra and get the new R1300GS.
To my way of thinking, 650,690,701 is middle weight. Most of these bikes would be a handful in the dirt, esp. when dropped
The only real midweight adv bikes on this list are Tenere , tuareg, transalp and ktm 790. All others are far too heavy
678wait. Yes, who wants to be throwing 200 plus kilos around off road! It's become a dick measuring contest for many.
I already put a down-payment on the F900GS. Say what you like, Beemers tend to be more than the story the stats suggest.
Triumph
I will probably choose between v85tt and tiger 900 gt pro. Tomorrow, I am selling my lovely cb500x :(😢
Sorry you’re selling the CB, but you find a good bike 🙌
Himalayan 450.
Exact.
