How to sing with confidence - sing more confidently

  • I’d like to talk today about how you can sing with total confidence now. But before we get into the meat and potatoes of today’s subject, I want you to think about what you think confidence is…take a minute, even pause the video if you’d like.
Some people think that if their voice were completely empowered and absolutely perfect…then they will be confident. And that’s fine to work towards that, but the hole in that logic is the perfect thing… We rarely become that. So why wait to be perfect to be confident? I feel that true confidence is the freedom to truly express yourself without ANY expectations. Cause you see, that’s where it all goes crazy, is in people’s expectations. They expect people to react in a positive way, or they expect themselves to have a certain quality of sound. And then your attention goes to that…your sound, or other people. And then you’re stuck in your head having an anxiety attack when you really just want to enjoy the music, or share the story.
So for this video, I’m going to approach this subject from an angle that I feel doesn’t get addressed too often. That angle is energetic. What I mean by that is, do you feel that you can use your energy to fill a room? Or do you often find yourself contracting your energy when you feel people are looking at you? Well, in today’s video, we’re going to tap into your energy, and create a sense of flow. This exercise requires a wee bit of imagination, but it’s a powerful tool that you can use whenever you want to feel totally confident.
Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Open your arms nice and wide. Register how it feels to make your body as big as you can. If it feels silly, that’s ok. We are trying something new. Take your attention back to your body. See if you can feel lots of energy shooting out of your arms like laser beams. Extend your laser beams all the way to the wall. When you have a sense of that feeling, bring your attention to your stomach - the center of your being.
Now, imagine that there is a light inside there. You are going to imagine that this light grows bigger and bigger until it extends to fill the entire room. Fill the room with your presence. Say to yourself, “I am here.” “I am ready to be seen and to be heard.” This is a wonderful way to get your body comfortable with feeling open. If your body can be big, and be comfortable with it, your voice will follow along. Keep working with this feeling until it feels completely comfortable.
When you are ready, imagine your voice is the same as the light from the center of your being. Exhale any sound you like, and as you do, imagine that your sound is filling the room just like the light did. Really explore the space out in front of you. Practice this as often as you’d like. What I notice when I practice with this feeling, is that my voice feels like it is blossoming from the inside. There is no “push” to get it out. It simply opens and flows.
I would suggest that a full minute of this simple exercise everyday for a full month would totally change how your voice feels to you. You will feel completely comfortable being seen, being heard. That’s confidence!
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video! Please feel free to leave any questions in the comments portion of today’s video. And don’t forget to subscribe! I would love to see you here more often! Happy Singing!!

+Parichat Chuenchom Thank you so much! I practice these things in my daily life, and have really explored how everything is so connected! For me, it's all about feeling comfortable in my own skin, and with my own energy. When that falls into place, I realize everything flows much easier. I'm looking forward to hearing your success stories!

This video is sooo amazing! I found this video this week and here is what happened- I had a senior solo competition earlier this week and I have been singing for a long time:) the only problem is that BECAUSE I have been singing for so long that I have put expectations on myself to live up to what I have previously done and be "perfect". On top of this, the individuals I am competing against in my high school have been to nationals with me and have won multiple singing competitions. Finally, our conductor and teacher is not the nicest man in the world, and I was really scared that I wouldn't be able to live up to the expectations that I have put on myself. This video helped me so much that I just let go and actually WON!!! I'm soooo glad that I found you and thank you for everything😋

+Demi The human HI Friend!! Singing in front of your family and friends is an excellent way to begin to feel comfortable with performing. you'll want to start with a song that you can do well. Something that is in the conversational part of your voice. That way, you're not concerned with how you sound so much, and you can anchor the feeling of confidence in your performance. Also, if there is a song that concentrates on a particular strength of yours, you'll want to focus in on that. For example, I LOVE to be sassy and mischievous when I sing! It just pulls me right out of my insecurities, and gets me focused in on the story and my point of view. (My favorite song to sing is called "Sin Wagon" by the Dixie Chicks) I hope this has been helpful! I'm looking forward to hearing you sing soon! Big hugs!

My daughter was so nervous about singing for her class in a school competition (she has never had a singing lesson but likes to sing). I then found this on utube and she watched it and a few other of Madeleine Harvey´s wonderful utube recordings. I could see her attitude change before my eyes, the tension went out of the room. The next day before her performance she told me she was not nervous and sang with confidence only becoming shaky at the end (when she caught the sight of a friend of hers who was crying) when I saw her sing through and louder ridding herself of the shake. Thank you so much Madeleine.I am actually a clinical psychologist myself and think your methods are wonderful and your delivery very engaging.

I just paused at 2:41 to say that is EXACTLY what happened. I was rather confident before the event, but after hearing what one of the people around me had to say about my voice...I was crushed. I didn't want to sing in front of anyone ever again, and I only wish I could regain the confidence I had before! I hope I learn how to do so by watching the rest of this video.
It would make singing on the worship team a lot easier. xD

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  Před 8 lety +4

+Canadian Batman Nerd I'm so glad you liked the video! It can be devastating to hear someone say negative things about our voices. It's literally the hardest pain to recover from..just remember that your singing is about you. As tough of a lesson it is, we can't control what other people think...although we will try. What is more important is how truthfully we express our own thoughts and feelings. There is power in accepting the fact that not everyone will like us, therefore, we no longer need to even try. Take all that creative energy and focus it on your love of singing! And you will be amazed at what your voice can do! I hope this helps! Keep shinning your light my friend!

I actually did pause it and ponderrrrred. I came up with, its knowing that the other humans (audience) will understand what you mean to be doing, or at least will understand that you are truly expressing something and it's important enough to you that you don't care how strange or eccentric the activity will be in which you express yourself. And also you're beyond embarrassment. And you what you're doing. Going to hit play now…interested.

I love this! I have a solo in my vocal group's show (this Friday) and I am terrified. I can't get out of my head and let go! I try to control every note, breath, etc and I think I'm a mediocre singer.
I think this video will help a lot though! My solo is Abba's I have a dream and it's my first solo ever.
