After the first few editions of the Laver Cup, I remember I thought Team Europe was going to dominate this competition easy for many, many years. Team Europe did have Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray after all. How times have changed. Hopefully Alcaraz, Sinner, and Medvedev and maybe Djokovic can join Team Europe next year to make it more competitive. It was way too one-sided this year. Congrats to Team World!

I would like to see a more welcoming tennis culture and for the most part it certainly is, but it still suffers to a degree what hockey suffers from. I don't want to spell out the obvious. Let's go USA 7-6 7-6! Team World wins 13-2! That said, they started slow & sloppy against an aggressive Team Europe barely holding serve. Then at 4 all, TW dialed in. It never should've gotten to a tiebreak in the 2nd set, because they had the momentum at 5-4. Then Tiafoe started playfully talking smack to Rublev in the changeover. Johnny, Fritz, Shelton, & the team were like wtf in their silence & looked displeased in their facial expressions. Fritz & Johnny finally told Tiafoe to stop & focus on the game. Then Tiafoe carried that distracted, overconfident mentality into the next game, moving slower & sloppy with errors which brought it to 5 all. He plays too much! Before we knew it, another tiebreak & Shelton had to protect the team as he did throughout the tournament. Team Europe played very well throughout, but Team World had great communication & camaraderie on the bench & really focused to lift their game in the pressure moments.

Am I the only one who thinks this tournament could be more interesting with four teams?
They could be... Team America, Team Asia-Oceania and then split Europe into two teams. The "easiest and most logical" division would be Team West Europe and Team East Europe, but I fear that would raise old ghosts of the cold war. I think a north and south division would be more fun and less susceptible to politicization.
We would have a Team North Europe and a Team South Europe. An imaginary line would have to be drawn to determine which part each country plays, approximately at the latitude of Paris. Team North Europe would include the UK, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and others. Team South Europe would include France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Serbia, Switzerland, Austria, Greece and others. This way it seems more or less balanced.
The four countries that host the four Grand Slams would each be on a different team.
With this division we could have a draw similar to this (just an example):
-Team America: Fritz, Tiafoe, Shelton, Paul, Baez, Cerundolo, Jarry, Auger-Aliassime
-Team Asia-Oceania: De Minaur, Popyrin, O'Connell, Thompson, Nishioka, Kwon, Yibing Wu, Zhizhen Zhang
-Team North Europe: Norrie, Ruud, Rune, Zverev, Lehecka, Medvedev, Rublev, Kachanov
-Team South Europe: Nole, Alcaraz, Sinner, Musetti, Tsitsipas, Coric, Dimitrov, Mannarino
Right now Team Asia-Oceania may be weaker, but tennis could gain popularity in Asia in the future. A format like this could even be a motivation for Asian players, making the sport more popular in China, India, Korea or Japan.
The problem is that I can't think of a way to fit the African continent into this equation, but at the moment it wouldn't make sense for it to have its own team because there are no players to support it.
Finally, I would move this tournament on the calendar. I would put it at the beginning of the year instead of the United Cup. It would be held in Australia, taking advantage of the fact that the best players go there for the Australian Open. It would also make sense because Rod Laver is Australian and the cup is named after him.
The United Cup may merge with the Hopman Cup at another time of the year.

Congratulations team world. The resurgence of the USA players should make the Laver Cup more competitive now and they played well but let's be honest this is nowhere near the best Europe team. If in theory every player was available Europe would have ranking 1,2,3,4,5,6 =21 combined. They actually had 6,9,16,25,44,142=242. A deficit of 221 ranking places. The best possible world team would be 8,11,12,13,14,19=77. They actually had 8,11,13,14,21=86. So their actual squad was only 9 ranking places worse than the best they could possibly have (essentially down to De Minaur not being there). Even if you swapped Monfils for Novak Europe would still have a team 80 ranking places worse than it could be. Having said all that Europe should still have done better. Monfils was a disastrous pick and the way he just quit on the first set of his match was unforgiveable in a team event. Hopefully Europe pick a few more top 15 players next time.
