    This is interesting. I'm slowly and clumsily working my way through Duolingo, and the lesson I'm on teaches you how to order food for a number of people. So ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ、and よっつ for example. I half expected 3 ninjas to follow this logic and be みにん

      I found this really frustrating when first learning... why mix two counting systems? I've slowly learned that there was a native (often referred to as Yamato) counting system which went ひい ふう みい よお いつ むう なな やあ こ とお. Then later, Japanese people borrowed from Chinese culture いち に さん し・よん etc. But counting one and two people was so ingrained in the language, they just stuck with the ancient/Yamato system for those (ひとり ふたり) It's very fascinating to study, if you're into etymology!

      You'll find before long that there's counters for a loooot of stuff, and they sometimes have different readings, particularly for 1 and 2

    why are there 2 pronunciations for some of them?

    • @Grondhammar
      @Grondhammar Před rokem +2

      Do you mean よ・し and なな・しち? What I've heard from Japanese friends is that し/しち are pronounced the same as 死 (し, death) and it's unlucky. But 四月 is しがつ, and they have roughly the same problem in Chinese (sì = four, sǐwáng = death). So I don't think that's entirely the explanation.

    • @Giozize
      @Giozize Před rokem +1

      4, 7 and 9 have two readings 4 - よん、し, 7 - なな、しち and 9 - きゅう、く. The story of the whole considered unlucky that the other person mentioned is also the explanation I've heard, but I'm not sure either. A lot of numbers just have different readings, particularly when counting things
