  • Kanji Anime is a new series where you can learn Japanese kanji with characters. Today let’s learn the kanji 月 (“moon”) and other 3 ones that have 月 in them. Make sure to check the stroke orders of each kanji as well in the late of this video!
    Kanji Anime Playlist: • Kanji Anime
    ========
    00:00 Today's Kanji
    02:17 月 (moon)
    02:30 明日 (tomorrow)
    02:50 服 (clothes)
    03:11 有名 (famous)
    03:27 朝 (morning)
    ========
    月 (moon)
    *Kunyomi: つき
    *Onyomi : ゲツ、ガツ
    * What's Kunyomi and Onyomi?
    Kunyomi (訓読み) and Onyomi (音読み) mean a way of reading kanji. Kunyomi is the Japanese pronunciation of a kanji whereas Onyomi is a pronunciation derived from Chinese (where kanji originated). Although there are many exceptions, typically a kanji is read in Kunyomi pronunciation when it appears as a single kanji while the Onyomi pronounciation is used when the kanji appears with other multiple kanji.

    Kanji that have 月 in them:
    明日 (あした): tomorrow
    服 (ふく): clothes
    有名 (ゆうめい): famous
    朝 (あさ): morning

      it's a fun way to remember hut I hope you realize that that's not actually the origin of the word. The character 明 in this case means "next", so it just literally means "next day".

    Indeed, "月" means moon, but you will notice that this "月" is also occasionally found in the Chinese characters for body parts. This is called "にくづき/niku-zuki," which is a part that happens to look like "月" by crushing the character for "肉(にく/niku):flesh" from both sides.

      I looked through the video and what the giraffe waiter says is お持ちいたしましょうか, which is really polite bc the giraffe is working
      in context it means '(when) shall I bring (you your drinks)?' it's a conjugation of 持つ (motsu) meaning 'to hold/own'
      So you were right on the pronounciation but missed that it was part of a much longer word
