- It's that time of the year again where we place a ban on our book buying habits until we've read some of the books we've bought, but not read. For this challenge I have 45 unread books, 40 of which I plan on reading for the challenge... No book buying for me until 2025 probably :p
My rules for this challenge:
1. Read 40 books
2. No book buying outside of books for work, or textbooks
3. I can DNF a book I don't like (I only live once)
4. Box sets or series don't count (such as my Time-Life book series)

I support ALL OF THIS! And I am so glad you are doing the challenge. 👏🏻👏🏻 🤗🤗 - MJ
Thanks MJ! I'm looking forward to reading a large chunk of my unread books and getting my TBR down to what it use to be :)
Woo hoo! I will be cheering you on!
Thanks Melinda! I'm pretty sure I'll be able to stick with it :)
I like your rules, especially the textbook one. 8) I'm a little surprised you own so few unread books. Good luck! I've been on the read what you own challenge since June, but shortly thereafter the Fire Nation came. So I have read very little and am still in the single digits. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.
I'm from Canada, so when you said Fire Nation I immediately thought of the forest fires in I think 5 of the province here last year :p Yeah, I used to be very good at keeping my TBR low ... then came booktube :)
Love how you explain how accessible this challenge is to all types of readers!
Good luck, potentially swearing of book buying for a year 😱 impressive!
I am doing 30-35 and have count 230 books on my physical TBR. I want it below 100 ideally, but below 200 seems a good place to start!
Good luck
Also agree: "I only have one life and don't want to spend it reading something I don't enjoy!" 😂💜📚
Glad to hear you're joining in on the challenge Chattie! 30-35 is a great goal and we'll all be around to support one another :)
It's so fun hearing everybody's rules! I love how many people are doing this challenge. It's going to be great to have a support group. I'm SO impressed that you only have 45 unread books--goals!
I use to only have around 5-10 unread prior to Booktube. I love this community, but it's given me an excuse to book splurge :p
Best of luck, Fred!
Thanks Vin. Shouldn't be too hard - my unread pile of books are pretty interesting ... though "Debt: the First 5000 years" by Graeber is going to be a chunker of a read :p
I love this challenge! I just heard about it recently and I'm not sure I'm completely ready to commit, but I know I have around 60 unread books I own, and I'd love to get through some of them. If I didn't already have a plan for my reading for Nov/Dec, I would be doing a Read What You Own December. I'm definitely thinking about how I can work this challenge in to 2024.
Best of luck. Before booktube I never had more than 5-10 unread books, so I'm looking forward to clearing some of these off my TBR :)
This sounds like a good challenge. I may try something similar as a new year's resolution for 2024.
It's definitely a challenge I need. I would like to get back down to under 10 unread books on my shelves. Good luck in 2024 if you choose something similar :)
Those are some pretty good a quite reasonable rules. I wish you luck on the challenge!
Thanks, I'm looking forward to reducing my TBR down in the next little while :)
@@ReadbyFred You're welcome
Awesome fred! Good luck to you.
Thanks Crystal. Shouldn't be too hard - I've got a good set of books to read; and, I can just bookmark those books I don't own during the challenge which peak my interest .
I love this challenge because it is so flexible 😊 good luck!
Thanks! The books on my TBR are all ones that I'm going to (I hope) enjoy reading. :)
Nice! Good luck to you
Thanks Daniel. Good luck with the challenge as well :)
You have my support.
Thanks! There are so many people doing the event that it's going to be fun (and for me, a long event :p ).
Welcome to the challenge. I would have counted individual volumes in a boxed set if I read any. Good luck.
Thanks Greg! I picked up the Time-Life Mysteries of the Unknown series because they looked nice (and the price was too good to pass up). They will likely remain forever unread (unless I'm researching a subject) which is why I'm not including them in my "unread" list.
Good luck with this challenge!
Thanks Mo! It'll be fun touching base with others to see how we are all doing with the challenge :)
I'm going to do this for a whole year.
Hah, you and me both. 40 books is going to take me well into 2024 - maybe even into December of that year.
Best of luck. See you on the other side of the challenge. 😁
Thanks Michael! No book hauls until 2025 for me I'm guessing :)
I may do this challenge for 10 books or so and see when I get there...good luck!
10 books is great! Whatever works for you is what matters :)
Good luck. I’m going for 100 physical books. No idea how long it will take me 😊
Wow, 100, that would take me 2 years. Good luck with your challenge too Debbie :)
Hi Fred I am new here but I been around for a few years. I am going to read 100 books cause I have over 400 book I need to read, have fun
Thanks Paul! Wow, 100 books is quite the challenge. Looking forward to tackling this challenge together :)
Good luck!
Thanks Courtney. It won't be too hard to complete the challenge - I'm excited about all the books I've got to read :)
@@ReadbyFred it's good to be excited!
I’m criminolly’s ma David my husband and I have always read so you all have my humblest apologies 🤣! I’m reading 6. Good luck everyone it’s fun.
This is going to be a fun event! Good luck with your 6 books! I am still amazed that people will be attempting 100 - that would take me close to three years!
I am not participating in the challenge, though I have plenty of unread books, plus plenty I would like to reread.
There are some books that I could just not pass up the opportunity to buy. Specifically, I have Sanctum Books’s reprints of _The Shadow,_ volumes 1 through 139. If I could find volumes 140 through the end (volume 151, or thereabouts), or the two Annuals, I would drop the challenge like a hot potato.
Well, if you change your mind and do decide to take part we'll be there to encourage you on :)
I'm only doing 25 books, which will probably take 6 months as I'm a slow reader. If it goes well I may expand it, I have a lot more than 40 unread books, not as many as MKV but a lot. I'm looking at it as a way to discover books I obviously bought for a good reason.
Hah, MKV has more unread books than total books I have in my procession :p 40 books is going to take me to the end of next year as I'm a slow reader too. Do as many as you feel you can Duncan - we'll all be there to support each other :)
Surely this video merits a patented Steve Response!
Lol! Should I be worried? It'll be good for me to get back down to only 5 or so unread books - even if it'll take me a year to do it :)
@@ReadbyFred Hah! I did my best to DEE-STROY you, but as usual, all your fellow Canadians came rushing to your defense!
Nope. I am not participating in this challenge. I'm not crazy 😂 ❤.
Lol, it's not for everyone. I'd like to get back down to under 10 unread books, so this is the perfect challenge for me :)
@@ReadbyFred I have about 800 unread books.... 😜.
@@TheBookclectic - OMG! :)
Sensible rules
For me, yup. Honestly I'm never going to read all of the Time-Life ones - they look great, but I'm not into the supernatural :p
Sounds like you have a good plan! I’m also going to try to be better about DNFing some of the fiction/romance books I’ve thrifted if I’m not hooked by page 50. I read about 50 books a year, so I hope to pick at least 3 books off my physical shelf per month to try to get to about 35-40 books for the challenge. I’m also allowing myself to read 1-2 books from my library each month so I can satisfy the mood reader/easily influenced by Booktube part of me. :). I’m looking forward to this challenge as well! I had an October nonfiction book splurge too just to “make sure” I had enough to get me through the year 😂.
That's a great plan Farrah. Lol, I think a lot of us had that book splurge. The irony of the splurge prior to the challenge was not lost on me :p
