"Of course anyone who truly loves books buys more of them than he or she can hope to read in one fleeting lifetime. A good book, resting unopened in its slot on a shelf, full of majestic potentiality, is the most comforting sort of intellectual wallpaper." ~ from 'The Boilerplate Rhino' by David Quammen.
This my approach to buying & reading books.

✊🏻 I feel you my friend... I have about 1000 unread books 🙈. I intend to read them all, but I'm logically aware this is not realistic. I can't read ALL my unread books when I continuously buy books. However, I'm a super moody reader, and I have this ridiculous fear that I'm going to be in the mood for something, and I'm not going to have that something on hand to read, so having LOTS of different books on hand feels warm and cozy and comforting for me! (It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I have no self control where books are concerned and know I will fail if I try 😂.)

I am a buyer but I also plan at some distant time to read them.
I live in a small beach house so I have one large bookcase and each shelf holds 2 rows of books. So it is easy to overlook the ones in the back. When I dust them I do find orphans that I really want to read.
Here in Costa Rica, as I told you, I have to have a book that I buy sent to my daughter in Indiana, she sends it to our shipper in Florida, and they send it to their office here in CR and I go pick it up. It's expensive and adds much to the cost of the book.
So any book I buy has tittled my interest tremendously.
I can't wait to hear about your 100 books. I'm trying for 50.
I am reading "The Exorcist" again. The movie was stupid, but the book is very scary.

The exception is Indy/small published books, especially if they are from an author I know and already enjoy. I almost always pass on the books I do buy to one of my children or my mom. I used to love buying books, but over the past few years I've been struggling financially going through law school and as a result going to bookshops became more depressing than anything else really. It even soured my enjoyment of reading to a degree. Then I started reading on my phone/tablet through library apps and it reopened and I think redefined my love of reading and books.
There's something freeing about letting go of a book, often to another reader, after reading it instead of putting it back up on the shelf to accumulate dust. That being said, I definitely still own a lot of physical books that I need to finally get around to reading 🙈

I think I fall somewhere in the middle of your dialectic. I certainly buy books faster than I can read them, but only by about 10%. I read between 120-150 books a year and keep my unread books entirely separate from my main shelves. My TBR hovers around 100 books at any time, but those books don't get filed in the main collection until I've read them. Every now and then I go on a book-buying-ban, but I'm comfortable with the gentle eroding of the TBR while allowing myself to pick up new releases whenever the mood takes me. Lockdown was a great time for me to pick up books I'd owned for a while, read them and move them to the main collection.

Sounds like a good strategy to make a little dent in my to read list, but not sure I can do it. Too much inputs in my life. There are you guys on book tube making recommendations, the media, scanning amazon etc. I have some friends who are authors always making good picks. I live near 2 major college towns of 2 major US university. I usually make a pilgrimage there at least once a year. Like most of these towns there are a huge amount of good used book stores. Hello Olly great video. Firstly I would say I am a reader of books and a buyer of books but definitely feel like a collector of them as well. However, when I say collector I wouldn’t say like it has to be a first edition as long as I can read it. I guess with collecting it would be more an author or a series such as the 87th precinct which I have a few books of I am yet to read. I think it’s definitely a lot quicker to build a tbr than reduce. Also if your in a charity shop and see books it’s hard to think they will still be there I know I’ve been very guilty of this after so long of not buying books. I’ve brought 15 books not to say look at me but to say that’s bad. I definitely will be taking part in this as I was going to make a list to see the books I haven’t read yet to shame me into stop buying books. I think I would be shocked at the number of books I’ve not read.

sorry for blathering on, I wanted to make another book recommendation. It is a non-fiction crime book. It is called 'Gas of Tank" by Todd Ternovan and Matt ST Amand. Todd is a retired police officer who served over 30 yrs in the Ontario Provincial Police OPP here in Canada. It starts in his rookie years in a small town up to his stint as an under cover officer and in the intelligence unit. This book gives a great nuts and bolts view of the day to day experiences of a law officer. Great insight info on investigation and interrogation techniques. There are a lot of very funny stories and tragic events that will rip your heart out. The stuff about being undercover will have you on the edge of your seat. This book will give you a new appreciation of what our police go through. I have to stop and thank the bobbies even know I sometimes get speeding tickets. I forgot to say, the book starts with Todd's early career as a corrections officer as he was studying of all things to be an early education teacher, which in some ways helped him deal with inmates. The quirky title will be explained in a funny story in the book. This book is a real page turner, hard to put down, except for some of the more tragic events. I had to stop to regain my breath . I give this book a big 10-4.

Oh God, "collecting" (in my case its more like gathering) books is a huge problem for many people. Here in the US in some states we have a very popular unofficial program where people may build, or purchase, a book box from the site called My Little Library, and there people can drop off books or leave books. I live in San Francisco and because it is a big, densely populated city, we have these boxes all over the city. Not on every block, but if you look on the official map, there should be probably at least a 100 boxes, plus there are places that are unofficial. Depending on the neighborhood, these boxes are often filled with excellent, new and old books, often brand new books. I lived in one area where this was really popular and I kept picking up books. Not any and all books. I actually check for information about the subject and the specific book on every book I take.
Basically, now I have 6 book case full of books, and then some boxes of books. Most I intend to read. Some I think I will probably sell on ebay. The problem is you think you want to read all of the books you have already picked because they are well reviewed, but in practice its not always easy to read, or maybe its not even that good of a book, but you are not sure whether the book is not for you, or if you are not getting the book for some reason, or maybe you are not reading it right. Add on top of that the fact that some of us have grown up in households where books were collected and respected, so we feel bad that the book may be thrown away or destroyed if we don't keep it. Now I have no space in my apartment.

    • @CriminOllyBlog

I’ve kept a reading log since 2002 or so; unfortunately I do know that 100 books would be 1.5-2 years’ worth of reading, and I’m sure I’ll want to buy/read something new before then.

For about 5 years or so now, I have been doing the Goodreads Reading Challenge - which is a number you set yourself as the number of books you want to finish in a year. I usually set the number at 52 - roughly a book a week - and it seems I always at least meet that number (sometimes I go beyond). If I did something ambitious like a goal of 100, that would invite a problem: I would have a sort of invisible ticking clock in my brain needling me to read faster. The problem with that: each book has its own power to 'dictate' to me the speed with which I'll read it. Sometimes it's lightning speed but that's not typical. What that means is I'm sensitive to what each book is guiding me to do with it (provided I've committed to reading it). ... I do buy books fairly often but I'm sort of strict about what I buy (from a used book retailer usually). I mostly buy books that I'm fairly certain I'm going to like. Why? There are too many books that I want to read so I don't have time to 'chance' something that is likely to bore me. (This approach is not foolproof but it usually works rather well. I still DNF.) I usually read at night and on weekends - and I also watch a fair amount of cinema - so time is a factor. ... I live in an average-size apt., not a house. So lately I have been taking books to work and putting them in a box called 'Free Books' so that others can read them. I rarely read a book twice and there are only certain books that I want to keep handy (out of fondness). Since I buy fairly regularly, giving books away helps me to visibly see the books I still have and still need to get to, and that helps me get through the books more quickly. My point in all of this?: With everything re: books, it's best to find what works for your reading pleasure. ;)

Lol I have often thought about putting a book buying ban on myself, and then I see something and go “meh” just buy it. I will read it at some point.

Yeah that "I'll probably read it one day" impulse is hard to resist!

I'm committing to the platinum level. I know that I'll have to move sometime over the next year and I need to stop buying books (except for the free ebooks). The fewer physical books that I have when I move, the better.

Good luck with the challenge. Just yesterday I picked up one of the D.C. Man novels by James P. Cody. 1970s action with a D.C. lobbyist(?) as the lead. That book has more to do with your normal reading than mine. In you tossing aside your book buying bug have I caught it?

Maybe you have! That definitely sounds like the kind of thing I'd read

I'm going to try for 25. Of course, I have caveats. :) I don't have to give up my subscriptions, and I am still buying the book I promised myself for my birthday. Also, I'm not counting Audible since I honestly do listen to those as I get them and have no backlog.

Fantastic! Those seem like very fair caveats. And as I said on Discord, love your username!
