For Canadians it probably is a good idea to keep your residency and for Americans to keep their Medicare. A friend of ours gave up her Canadian residency, age 66 and in apparently good health, was diagnosed recently with stage 3 cancer. She went back to British Columbia Canada and discovered that she did indeed have to wait 90 days for treatment there. She is back in Mexico now and paying the full cost of her treatment.
