  • One of the most popular revolvers for concealed carry, and for good reason. The LCR X is an extreme lightweight revolver with plenty of power.

    Many years ago I learned the value of a J-frame sized revolver first hand. It is a get off me gun for sure and it did get used in that manner, though I did not fire a shot. Once it was out the situation evaporated in seconds with two perps running like deer. They were trying to box me in in parking garage. I was not going to be a victim. I do not work in the city any more and do not have to wear a suit any more. The J-frame sized guns work well in that environment. (this was pre the micro 9mm semi auto era we are in how)

    I owned one of these in .357 for a hot-minute. The Mag loads are BRUTAL in this gun, despite the added weight. If you consider it as an easy-to-shoot .38, you will be fine.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket Před 2 lety +7

      The grip squishiness is very good for recoil absorption, also the polymer frame has enough damping to handle it. It DOES have a sharp slap in the hand but it's bearable. Train with .38+p and defend with magnum. Not all magnum loads are equal either, so choose wisely. I personally think a main carry piece should be 3" barrel and at least 20-22oz if .357magnum is your thing. For a pocket pistol/revolver, 14-16oz is fine with .38+p.

    • @matthewcaughey8898
      @matthewcaughey8898 Před 2 lety +5

      I train to adapt to the pain. I used a Kahr PM40 which was another brutal recoiling punisher. I got rid of it not cause it hurt but cause I couldn’t hit $#it with it unless I was in CQB or knife distances. I’ve since gone back to my P938 cause it’s much easier to hide then even a micro 9mm. In a fight for your life the wicked punch that .357 can dish out will mean you don’t need to shoot twice, plus Buffalo bore has developed a .357 load for short barrel guns. ( I run my own stump barrel burner loads that I built specifically for .357 snubs. I use faster burning powders and 125g bullets to get as much speed as I can in the stump barrel. The recoil is formidable and it’s one wicked fireball. It’s also loud as #u@k and even a miss will make the bad guy think it’s a damn hand cannon. In a 4 inch duty sized gun it rocketed a 125g hollowpoint to nuclear bomb spec and it’s pushing a Ruger service six to its upper limit I did this so I could go walking in bear country and not have to take 2 guns with me or fishing with extra protection from anything on 2 legs or 4)

      @@matthewcaughey8898 Personally I'd like a 5-shot 45 Colt that throws 255 Keith bullets at about 900 fps from a 3" barrel. I guess until Taurus makes a run of those, or S&W or Ruger does this, the only option is a custom SAA like a Vaquero. And based on what some of the guys in SASS are doing with SAA revolvers, it's not a slow dumb hunk of iron whatsoever.

      @@thunderthumbz3293 Damn!... Yeah, I bought the .38 Special only version because I thought that the recoil of the .357 Magnum version would be too much; this confirms it. But I've since moved away from 2" barreled revolvers, and have upgraded to a 3" barreled SP101 as my main concealed carry... And I've noticed GREATLY improved inherent accuracy with the 3" barrel - to where I wouldn't want any less accuracy than this! Imo the 3" Ruger SP101 gives you the most revolver you can get for a small size - and at a reasonable price.

    The Ruger LCR is my favorite snubnose revolver (and the LCRx with an external hammer if you like that). It's my grandmother's EDC. It has such a smooth, double action trigger (better than my grandmother's old S&W Model 642), a comfortable/ergonomic grip, better sights than most snubnose revolvers, more intuitive cylinder release (looking at you Colt), and it's so light. Usually many shooters without experience with a double action trigger or revolvers need some time to get used to the double action trigger, but the smooth trigger on the LCR series makes shooting it accurately (even with a small barrel) easy to do. My grandmother is 62 and she can shoot her LCR very well from up to 15 yards. The LCRx with a hammer for a single action trigger pull sounds great for those instances where you are looking for more accuracy.

    The myth that the 357 is no better than a 38 out of a shorter barrel has been thoroughly debunked my Paul Harrell, Mrgunsngear and many others. 357 out of a short barrel is more like a 9mm +p or 40 out of a service sized pistol. The classic 125 gr 357 loads out of a 2” barrel are usually still generating 1200+ fps. Federal’s 180 gr Swift load does 950 fps.
    You can argue that the 38 is more efficient and practical in a shorter barrel but the 357 is going to be significantly more powerful than 38.

      I am fairly always conscientiously aware of my surroundings and since generally pocket carry i can put my hand on my gun while in my pocket or draw it and put my gun in my armpit and carry it there if i feel my situation going left. Then, if it continues my gun is already out and in my hand before the bad dude is too close.
      This has served me well and i am 56. I have drawn a few times. I have fired, NEVER !!! By being prepared before the situation has already gone pear shaped i have averted a worse case scenario and that includes time being an auxiliary police officer and a short term being a Bounty hunter.
      Although i prefer the comfortably of a side leather holster, pocket carry allows me to be hands on with my gun much sooner than if i had to wait to draw from a holster on my side or appendix.

    Back in the old days when i started shooting, the revolver was it. Yes there were semi's like the 1911 but they were not authorized for duty. Off duty was a different situation. My main complaint about the 38 is that for the same bullet weight / size as a 9mm the round is loaded way down in performance. You need to get a 357 to get the same ballistics as a 9mm and it still usually falls short in a snubbie because of the barrel and cartridge loading optimized for a minimum of 4". Being a dinosaur I am still very comfortable with a revolver but flexible to appreciate that in many cases a semi is a better option.

    A few things I’ll say about semi autos in their defense is if your left handed they’re far easier to get back into a fight. For me it’s dump, grab my second mag, shove it home and as my right is coming back it catches the top of the gun, releases the slide and pulls away as the gun slingshots itself closed. Using a full sized revolver to reload ( I used a Ruger service six) I punch the cylinder with my weak hand and I flip the gun up. Holding it with my dominant hand ( left ) I get clear of the cylinder and either use a pair of fingers or let the cylinder drop. I punch the ejector rod hard and fast to punch the empties out while holding the gun by the trigger guard with my left. My right hand reaches for a speed loader and drops it into the chamber. I lock the cylinder with my left hand as I turn the knob or push the button ( I really prefer the knob on the HKS ). I let the empty speed loader drop as I use my right hand to press the cylinder closed and reposition my left back on the grip. It sounds complicated yes but I’ve got it down to 5 seconds
