Texas Shooting: Will tighter gun control follow?

  • On a quiet Tuesday in a small rural town an 18-year-old armed with an automatic rifle burst into a primary school in Texas and barricaded himself in a classroom full of nine and ten-year-olds.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
By the time he was shot dead by police he had killed 19 children and two teachers.
It is the worst school shooting in the United States since 26 people were killed in Sandy Hook a decade ago.
And this massacre has, like 10 years ago, sparked calls for tighter gun controls. Our Washington Correspondent Siobhan Kennedy is in Texas.

Not just that but I remember when I was in year 1 and doing the fire alarm practice (testing it and trying to get you out fast as possible etc) and being scared of the sound and blocking my ears. Never mind having to do the same thing for school shootings like Americans do it’s insane, they just go in the same loop over and over.

I live in the UK now, but grew up in America and went to school right when the school shootings started happening. We used to have bomb drills (they didn't call them that, but used a code name that everyone knew) for when bomb threats were called in, and we had security guards, and the day after one school shooting where a couple kids pulled a fire alarm and their buddies outside shot at the kids coming out of school some genius at my school pulled the fire alarm thinking it was funny. Now I have a kid of my own and I can't imagine any existence where I would want to educate him in America.

In fact it's the biggest killer of young black men - usually killed by other black men using handguns which account for the largest number of gun killings in the US - by a substantial margin. Secondly, you fail to address my central point - that only the law abiding would give up their weapons if the 2nd amendment was removed and that would lead to absolute carnage. I'd love to year 'you lot' come up with a solution instead of screeching.

The US has had over 200 mass shootings this year alone. We have a population of 68 million in Britain and mass shootings are rare, the first and last school shooting we had was in 1996 in Dunblane. 16 children and one teacher were dead with at least 17 others injured. It was a major issue and an investigation was started by parliament. In December 1997 the House of Commons voted by a wide margin for Labour Party legislation to effectively ban all handguns, over 160,000 were handed in. Lots of people still own guns in Britain but mainly for sport and hunting and they abide by strict rules on licensing, storage and usage. America's problem is how highly the second amendment is regarded and the gun lobby, but hopefully they go down the same route as us.

Yesterday I was grumbling to myself about a traffic delay here in Southwest England.
And then I heard about this latest senseless tragedy in the US, and that put everything in perspective.
Much as I love the US, and its citizens, I'l never quite understand the irrational relationship that country and its people have with guns. And it's unlikely to change. At least in any of our lifetimes. There are just too many Americans who've wedded themselves to an irrational belief system whereby their sense, not just or individual liberty, but as human beings, is centred on their pretty-much unrestricted right to military-grade semi-automatic firearms. Even the slightest measures to restrict their purchase, ownership, or even carrying in public is seen as a mortal threat.
This will never change. And if a few hundred innocent people have to die in Americans schools, or churches, or shopping malls every year - then that is a price American Conservatives are willing to have the rest of us pay for their lunacy.

Number of deaths by shooting in America in 2020 was 45,000.
Number of deaths by shooting in England/Wales in 2020 was 30.
Their 2nd amendment was originally intended to form militias in case they were attacked by Britain, France or Spain. Now America has the biggest military and nuclear arsenal in the world, it’s not possible for them to be attacked.
In 1940 Hitler mounted an invasion of England (Operation Sealion) but the public were still not armed. The military had it covered. Fortunately the RAF dealt with it so Hitler cancelled the invasion.

I think operation Barbarossa had something to do with that, still, if the Native Americans had not have armed themselves they would probably be extinct by now, The Japanese said that they feared an armed populace more than the Army in case of an Invasion by them, every dictatorship in the world disarmed their populations before genocides took place, The vast majority of homicide in the US is gang related with 'illegally' held guns. Take the big city shootings out of the equation and America is one of the safest civilian armed countries in the world, Its southern neighbour Mexico surpasses virtually every country in homicides by gun in the world and guns are illegal there. Shooters like Salvador choose places were they know no one will shoot back, Schools, gun free Zones and nearly all occur in Democrat controlled areas with the strictest gun control measures. Look at the people behind these shootings, they are all seriously disturbed in some way or ideologically driven like the san Bernardino killers (Islam) Fork hood (Islam) Timothy McVeigh (domestic Terrorism) who used a fertiliser bomb to kill 168 people including dozens of Children. Its not guns or access to them, its the sick minds of people.

Why do so many other developed nations not have America’s baleful gun culture? Germany, the UK, Japan, for example, don’t seem to have this terrible issue with gun crime, and yet there is relative peace in terms of general society, and certainly mass killings are rare. America needs to seriously look at its Second Amendment. There are only three countries that have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms: Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States. Although Mexico and Guatemala both have a constitutional right to bear arms, the US is in a league of its own simply because it is the only country without restrictions on gun ownership in its constitution. After the Second Amendment was adopted in 1791, it inspired other countries around the world to provide their citizens with the right to own guns. However, only 15 constitutions (in nine countries) ever included an explicit right to bear arms. They are Bolivia, Costa Rica, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Liberia, Guatemala, Mexico, and the US. All of those countries, excluding Mexico, the US, and Guatemala, have since rescinded the constitutional right to bear arms. So, America is the outlier here in terms of citizens’ rights to bear arms. Does it want to continue this, and put up with its horrible mass killings? Or does it want to consider repealing the Second Amendment, thereby allowing the average American citizen to breathe that much easier in the ‘land of the free’?

    • @dalebonehart211
      @dalebonehart211 Před 2 lety

Any infringement on the Second Amendment by the Government would lead to more violence, bloodshed and eventual armed revolt across the country. Other countries don't have the ability to fight for their freedom (with guns) in the event a tyrannical force were to come to power, but America does. That is what the Second Amendment is for, and that is why it was so important to the founders. The lockdowns in Australia is a prime example of what can happen when a government wishes to impose their will on an unarmed public.

They are rare because World War Two turned Japan and Germany into largely pacifist states. The mass shooting phenomena in the USA started as the descent into political instability started. The severe uptick started happening about ten years ago, around the time the extreme polarization happened. Unfortunately, violence is now socially acceptable in the USA because one can find justification in current social movements. As a Canadian, we don't have this problem. We regulate our guns, we didn't get rid of them, we regulated them. That's it, we all still have shotguns and semiautomatic rifles with hair triggers, but it's REGULATED. Owners of fire arms are expected to comply with all mental heath checks and physical inspections, they take away your gun if you: are clinically depressed, are dying, have a violent crime on record or have mental illness. So all you have to do is prove good mental health and healthy body and you can go around shooting all you want.

The second amendment was written when the average gun could fire one bullet from and unrifled barrel a minute, maybe two if you were exceptionally well trained and drilled. At this time america was very secular, open to imigration, and had just fought for their freedom, and offered land and opportunity for everyone that was willing to grab it. If want to get really technical the 2ND Amendment allows for civilians to own exactly what the U.S. Military has and uses. That hasn't been the case since 1934 with all hopes lost in May 1986. Every machine gun sold in the private market to civilians has to be made before that date. The process to acquire Class 3 weapons is lengthy sometimes taking up to 1 year. Your local Police Chief or Sheriff has to know about it and sign off on the forms. You also need to pay a Federal tax of $200 on each item PLUS the cost of the weapon and sales tax. These days fully transferable machine guns cost over $30,000.
