    Slaanesh, also known as the "Dark Prince," the "Prince of Pleasure," the "Lord of Excess," the "Perfect Prince," and "Prince of Chaos" in the Imperium of Man and "She Who Thirsts" among the Aeldari, is the Chaos God of pleasure, hedonism, excess and decadence. Lust, pride and self-indulgence are the hallmarks of all who follow it.

    Imagine that you woke up one morning and felt drowsy. You never had coffee before but you needed the boost for work so you buy some instant coffee, down them and you're boosted, you feel more alive and you're good to go to work. But after a while, your body adapted, the instant coffee is no longer enough, but you wanted to feel alive again, so you start buying espresso from a local coffee shop. Things were fine for a while again but soon you adapted and don't feel that one shot of espresso is enough so you tried taking two at once and that did the trick. But again, your body adapted and you required more to feel that boost, to feel alive, so you went for three. Then four. Then five. Then, no amount of espresso felt enough, so you went to look for something stronger... And you went for meth.

    The one thing people forget about Slaanesh I've seen is his/her/it's greatest tool isn't feeding temptation, it's feeding pride. You earned this, the world owes you this. Pride is Slaanesh's favorite sin as if you feel you deserve it, or in your right, you're willing to go these excessive lengths to please yourself, no matter how horrible. Hence why the first three seem to be the standard sorts of temptation, but the last three feed on one's pride: Be it the desire of adoration, achievement, or the right to be able to finally rest from your duty.

      Although the Chaos Gods need sentient life to survive, they don't seem to have the restraint to NOT cause the complete extinction of all things once they achieve victory against all other factions that stand against them. Just look at what Slaanesh did and is still doing to the Eldar, whose souls are even more "nutritious" than humans.
      If Chaos won, eventually the whole universe would be flooded with a tidal wave of Warp energy, making everywhere be like the Eye of Terror, then eventually, all life in the universe would be either slaughtered or vored by daemons.

      *They stood in a natural hollow within the cliff, with a rough but relatively level floor that stretched almost eighty paces across. In the centre of the chamber lay a circular pit approximately fifteen paces at its widest point. Steam rose in gusts from a thick, heaving surface of red and yellow. Arms, legs and hairless heads rolled and bobbed in the horrific stew; lifeless fingers seemed to wave as the hands rose and fell with the escape of trapped gases. The gangrenous air over the mass seethed with flies, their buzzing rasp lost in the reverberating voice of the pit. With growing revulsion Malus’s shocked mind took in every detail of the pit’s hideous contents and a small part of him realised that it was a stew of melting bodies, tossed in by the hundreds and left to ferment in the steam. The whole surface heaved with an eruption of stinking gas and as the highborn watched, the heads riding the surface of the mass rolled back on melting necks and moaned. Their voices were the source of that terrible symphony of pain that rose with the steam and the highborn was stunned in awe and horror at the sight*

    You know, thinking about there being a reward at the end of the tests, I actually think that might be the point. This might have been said before but I didn't see any comments mentioning it, and it's an interesting idea.
    Basically the first five rings are all deadly traps, but then the sixth is really nice besides eventual death and loss of potential. I think that last part IS the punishment. Basically if you survive the first five, you did it. You won, you're past the trials. And so Slaanesh will offer you paradise. If you accept it, you get your prize, and nothing more. It's a lifetime of perfect pleasure, but it's a mortal, earthly sort of pleasure. Likely far magnified through Chaos, but still of a mundane sort. Slaanesh is probably disappointed, but seeing you burn out when you could have shone so brightly is at least a yummy little consolation prize.
    But if you can resist that, turn down every happy ending you can imagine and still push through, than you've truly passed the test and shown a spirit that is truly beautiful and unique, and that's the point. When you see Slaanesh, you're filled with that utter bliss of true unmatchable perfection, and then you are frozen in that moment. The happiness in ring 6 will end one day, but this won't. Time has stopped for you and you can spend eternity experiencing that one moment of utter unimaginable joy forever. And, having shown that unique beauty in your unbreakable spirit, Slaanesh gets a new decoration for their palace, each soul capable of achieving that being a special work of art.
    I have no canon basis for this and have only skimmed the Liber Chaotica so I don't know if it's addressed there, but I really love the concept.

      You bring up a good point. Slaanesh is the God of Excess. Through out her palace is filled with wonderful temptations. Money, food, sex....etc. Yet, only two kinds of people can pass through, the pious (meaning they reject temptation) and those who aren't satisfied with such temptation (meaning they want something more - it's like looking at a one stack burger and saying nah because you wanted a 30 stacked burger).
      So, by being unsatisfied (or pious) and making it all the way till the end, you are likely granted ascension or something.

    With DK asking how Slaanesh isnt the most powerful god, Bricky is 100% on the money but theres another quote Id like to throw in there that shows the other chaos gods kinda fear that DK might eventually be right. Think this is from Fear the Dark Prince?
    "Though Khorne is the only god openly hostile to the Dark Prince, Nurgle and Tzeentch are also ill at ease in his presence, despite the fact that the most typical hierarchy of power between the four Chaos Gods sees Slaanesh at the bottom. Even they feel the magnetic pull of his matchless charisma, and are both attracted and repelled by their younger brother.
    This is due, in part, to the fact that all the Chaos Gods embody the excess for which Slaanesh is known: Khorne with his bloodlust, Tzeentch with his scheming, and Nurgle with his spreading of plague. Each is an obsession that Dark Prince can turn to his will with merely a whispered promise. Lurking deep within the psyche of each of his brothers is the suspicion that the influence of the Dark Prince is rapidly growing, and that Slaanesh will perhaps one day eclipse them all in strength."
    All the chaos gods obsess over their realm, and take a certain level of pride for every great deed done in their name, in the end all things feed She who Thirsts.

    As far as I remember, mortals don't become Daemons, so no becoming Daemonette or Keeper of Secrets. Sometimes, a being is considered worthy by the Chaos Gods and offered a change to become a Daemon Prince. However, most beings immediately fail this and become Chaos Spawns, soulless and mindless mob units with no change to go back.
    There is even a stratagem in game where a character can ask a boon from the Gods and gets to roll the dice: most of the results are some sort of buff, but rolling double sixes gets you to switch the model with Daemon Prince. However, if you roll a double-one, you get a Chaos Spawn instead.

    @Bluecho4 Před 2 lety +101

    One aspect of Willpower that psychologists have discovered, through testing, is that it is finite. There's only so much mental will that can be exerted at a given time, before the body/brain is exhausted of its ability to do so. The tests show that when a person must resist temptation, they are less likely to resist further temptation later that same day. You must rest to replenish willpower.
    That's what makes the arrangement of Slaanesh's Realm in general, and the sixth realm in particular, so insidious. It's not just that each successive realm probes the invader for weaknesses, hoping to find the one temptation that will make them submit immediately. Instantly succumbing is ideal, but only half the process.
    The other half is the war of attrition against the invader's Will. Every time they resist temptation, that's a bit of their mental energy sapped. Every creature comfort denied wears a little more of their defenses away. Combine this with the kind of hyper-vigilance needed to avoid being ensnared is, itself, mentally and emotionally exhausting.
    The person who makes it all the way to the sixth layer of Slaanesh's Realm has had a hell of a day. Their journey was long, hard (giggity), and full of perils. They've had to face their deepest, ugliest desires. When they reach layer 6, most every person that has ever lived would be so tired. So utterly depleted. Not to mention, they know that when they reach Slaanesh's palace, they'll need all the strength they can muster.
    It is so, so easy to lie down. To let this placid, soft land embrace them like a warm bed. To even convince oneself that one _must_ rest, to regain one's strength for the fight ahead.
    Of course, the moment you fall asleep, you're done. Because you aren't going to wake up again.
    And even if you resist this, the last and most cruel of temptations, you're that much more tired when you face Slaanesh. At that point, you are trying to resist the Prince of Pleasure - the most perfectly desirable being - at the moment when you're at your very weakest.

    I've got this idea for a story revolving around a very particular ork who is on the space hulk once it smashes into armageddon.
    He looks at the WAAAGH!! in unfolding before him, and he finds himself inadequately equipped; can't find enough daka. As he wanders through the wreckage he stumbles apon a warp rift that is still open, and walks through into the realm of chaos. After a bit more aimless wandering, he stumbles into Slaanesh's realm. Being an ork and having such a singular mind that he is, he is particularly resilient to the earthly pleasures of each of the rings. He arrives at the excess of addoration and achievement and is given visions of himself killing his warboss and ruling over armageddon, but is unsatisfied with the ammount of daka and carries on. Slaanesh's realm can't seem to comprehend the limitless want this ork has, or perhaps the ork's mind is just too small to formulate a proper desire. Eventually, he reaches the final realm, rather annoyed at the fruitlessness of his quest, and comes face to face with Slaanesh, who offers the promise of limitless daka. Having never learned what a limit is, never mind the concept of the lack of one, he instead simply steals shiny tree and swings it around like a club. Satisfied, he rips a hole in the realm and jumps back through to armageddon, leaving Slaanesh dumbfounded.
    This ork would never stay on armageddon though, as their unnatrual longing for more daka drives him to boredom of the unimpressive WAAAGH!! and he leaves the planet. What adventures will our little green friend go on next?

    I like the idea of someone making it all the way through to encounter Slaanesh in person and becoming a daemon prince of Slaanesh. To make it all the way through all the circles would require an UNBELIEVABLY pure heart and strong will and Slaanesh would absolutely love to corrupt such a being to their will.
    Also he/she/they/it would totally get off on them realising that their entire journey was for naught.
    As for depictions of Slaanesh's realm: Total War: Warhammer III. I know it's fantasy and not 40k but there is a lot of crossover where Chaos is concerned.

Cause I think (own theory here) They are truly glad to see someone as no one that see's them lives for very long as their presence would be under the effect of a constant Orgasm.. so they don't allow any of their minions near and those few short hours is the only company that Slaanesh will ever know.

    If you throw enough Necron Warriors at the problem I am sure it'll end The Dark Prince. They have no sole to corrupt nor programming to Twist so long as the Pharon can keep a distance he could end the threat.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 Před 2 lety +3

      I very much doubt that a Pharon could "keep their distance" through all six layers. They HAVE to go too, to direct their forces. Leaving themselves vulnerable.
      It's difficult to tell what a Necron might be tempted by. But all the Necron novels show that they each have their own desires. Slaanesh is crafty, they'll probably figure something out. (Heck, tempt them with the possibility to eating flesh; turn them into a Flesh Eater).

    • @FireTalon24
      @FireTalon24 Před 2 lety +3

      The problem there is Slannesh's bullshit powers.
      Lucius was given the power that whenever he was slain, if the slayer took any pride whatsoever in the kill, they would find themselves overtaken by Lucius's soul and their face would be added to his armour. This included a manufactorum worker who created a mine Lucius stepped on and a Necron warrior. At least from what I heard.
      Which is some bullshit on par with Ultramarines plot armour.

      Chaos Corruption is a thing. Just being in the presence of the main Slaaneshi chaos champion, let alone traveling through the realm itself, would make one more capable of feeling pride and pleasure. This is why Lucius’s power is insidious.
