Without knowing the story, my tears just fall constantly.

We're supposed to hear the guillotine blade each time after a nun exits the stage. THAT is the emotional impact of the most upsetting ending of any opera. They aren't shot with a gun...
The way it was composed will hit you harder than anything any opera will do. Seek out the correct way and it'll break your heart.

These were a group of nuns who offered themselves as victim martyrs to God in hopes of bringing peace between Church and state during the reign of terror in France. The reign of terror was conquered 10 days after their sacrifice.

@@CatholicK5357 I thought they were executed because they refused to give up their loyalty to the king. I could be wrong though.

Best performance I've seen so far was done in La Scala in Milan in 1999.
Too bad that video has been removed because of copyrights.

The first time I saw this scene was the following. And I think is still the best performance, for musical choices and for the stage. I hope you can enjoy it:

la mort de la prieure n'est pas forcement une mort très chrétienne...mais le sacrifice de Blanche de la Force rachète la mort de la prieure....

This production suppresses the townsfolk. We don't see them and just barely hear them off-stage singing the music Poulenc wrote for them.

What on earth is possibly ridiculous with this production/scene? I think they took the music and the story very seriously and found a beautiful image for this gruesome act. Who wants to see a guillotine falling down? THAT would be ridiculous. Them literally walking as white angels into the dark is much more powerful. Before bashing every recent take on opera, you should foremost respect the work and passion that visibly went into this.
