Johnny Abarrientos: Greatest Filipino Point Guard Ever

- Manila, Nov. 2, 1997 - The Philippine Star's Joaquin Henson stirred local basketball aficionados with the story of Johnny Abarrientos being recruited as possible temporary replacement for injured Charlotte Hornets veteran Muggsy Bogues.
If that materializes, the Alaska star will become the first Asian to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Henson writes that Abarrientos met Friday with Charlotte international scout Joe Betancourt to discuss the possibility of the Alaska guard joining the Hornets in January. Present at the meeting were adviser Anton Montinola and Alaska coach Tim Cone .
Betancourt said "Charlotte is the right team for Johnny. My goal is to be able to bring the first Asian to the NBA."
"I will recommend signing Johnny to a ten-day contract, we'll pay for his airfare and all his expenses. If there's a chance for Johnny to play in the NBA, it'll be with Charlotte. It's important to have someone in the organization batting for him. An I am pitching for Johnny to make it.
Coach Tim Cone said Alaska will not get in the way of Abarrientos playing in the NBA. "We'll lose games without Johnny, but we're willing to sacrifice for his sake. It's a great opportunity for a Filipino."
Betancourt will be back in early January with a contract for Abarrientos, who described the deal as "a dream come true."

Lolo ko basketball player. Grade 1 or 2 palang ako nun tska yung lolo ko naka wheelchair na pero kapag pba na ang palabas wala na kaming magagawa kahit ma birthday paman o kahit na anong occasion face to face na kaagad yun sa tv tapos kahit kami gustong manuod ng tv ayaw tlga nya palitan channel. Nung nag simula na ko mag laro sa school nmin na realize ko na kung bakit ganun lolo ko. Ang galing pala nila, lalo na si abarrientos. Idol ko rin to!

A bit of overstatement on the last part. The Hornets sent him an invitation for a PRE-SEASON camp not the actual regular season games.
@@louie.dichoso nope you should watch Johnny's interview, he confirmed that the hornets offered 2 contracts, 1st an invitation to basketball camp and then a 10 day contract, but unfortunately it didn't push through

I missed this kind of excellent-brilliant moves of Jhonny A. (my most favorite PBA player) that now a days you can seldom see it in modern PBA, Why? In my own personal opinion, the players of today have so much distraction unlike in the early 90's there was no google, Facebook, Instagram, twitter, Whatapps, chatting, texting, video-cam to cam etc. The quality time of hard work in their practices they spent before (90's) couldn't match of the present PBA players. This is the very reason I didn't watch the PBA games anymore.
