Fix Dog Training and Behavior Problems Before They Happen #93

  • An old adage in dog training is that the best time to fix a problem or behavior challenge is before it happens. And though that may be true, it does not help when you have a problem or training challenge! There’s a systemic approach that I’ve laid out for myself and my students for any challenge we have with our dogs.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • A long list of problems presented by just one dog who was a bit over a year old.
    • How that dog was thrown out of 3 Day Cares and lost his home.
    • Why Dr Google might not be your best source of information for dog training.
    • How everyone has an opinion about dog training.
    • The way I look at dog training challenges and why to take an inventory.
    • About the categories of challenges in dog training.
    • Why we create autonomy for our dogs and how that creates success.
    • How to know if you have a Sun Shower, Hurricane or Iceberg with your dog.
    • The reason to watch for Icebergs.
    • When Hurricanes might need a Veterinary Behaviorist to diffuse.
    • The formula to help you with challenges that starts in Do-Land.
    • Why we need to deal with our dog’s emotion first.

Enjoyed this podcast just as I have enjoyed all the others. Love helping my dogs live the best life possible. It makes you a better person who’s able to train themselves to help their dog change their behaviour. Sounds simple and it can be. Just give it a try and get those ah ha moments your dog hid from you suddenly burst out into that rainbow. Thanks once again Susan. I love tater salad. He’s a dream demo dog. You and Kim did an amazing transformation of his past behaviour to the present. Awesome !

Hi Susan! I just joined Recallers last month. I have two 9 mth old Aussie Cattle Dogs but I also have my own Dog Training business. I just had this issue come up through a new client... dog is chewing the couch and shoes, etc... I was able to do a power session with multiple tools I did tell her there is no magic trick to teach a dog not to chew your couch. It’s Yer Choice was instantly the most powerful game changer and the owner sent me a video a couple days later showing great success with their impulse control. Happy owner and happier more engaged dogs = less destructive behaviors and less owner avoidance and frustration. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us and helping dogs and owners have their best life!

I love your podcasts, Susan! It’s going to be nearly a year before I can acquire a dog but you make everything so clear.
It also reminds me of raising secure and well balanced children.
I plan to get your courses nearer the time, but am already working out what my house rules and boundaries are going to be.

So glad to have found you Susan! At 2:35 in this podcast episode you mentioned chewing a toy against your body. It sounds like this is not a desirable behavior. Why is that and what does it mean?

Lol! "Put a cookie in front of his nose." My friend used to tease me "Hang a pork chop from your face, then she will pay attention to you." It took uch less than that, thankfully.

Thanks about all the great and kind content you are putting out. Do you have a course or anything more on helping two dogs to get along even better (to get to tolerate or adore). I actually tried to buy the "homeschool the dog" with the discount from the emails but the payment never worked. Thank you!

Hi! New puppy owner here. She’s a 6 month old Aussie that we adopted. She has some separation anxiety issues. What’s the best way to avoid that?

Susan my challenge is a three month old mini Aussie, she can not stand to be without me. we put her in her outside kennel and she will never stop barking. There are times she does need to be outside, she has Kongs, blankets, chew toys and even another dog with her how do we stop this behavior. I think this will be a hurricane I no time.
