Yes, you've got that spot on. The music of Jonie Mitchell, The Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Heart. Peace and love? The system hates that. They operate and thrive on conflict. This song causes nostalgia to wash over me in a wave that is almost physical. It was on the hit parade when I proposed to my wife (now 41 years married) and will forever be synonymous with that event in my life.
1976. 17 years old and driving up "the Ventura Highway" on our way to San Luis Obispo. Three of us, the Mount brothers and myself, a pack of Wintson's between us and one America tape. I actually heard this song for the first time while riding shotgun on the very highway it was written about. The whimsical music of America and the euphoria I felt road tripping with my best friends enroute to my first of hundreds of road trips to the central coast was epic and served to make America, in my opinion, the best band of all time.
Great song loved it as a teenager in the UK in the 70's. Made it extra special last year when I was actually driving along Ventura Highway listening to it on the cd player. Living the dream at 61....
Actually, there is no Ventura Highway, but there is a Ventura Freeway.. It just doesn't sound as good in the song... "Ventura freeway, in the sunshine..." Yeah, no.
It wasn't Number 1 on the charts? Hard to believe. This is a great song and still sounds as good as it did back then. Needs a re-release to this generation.
It didn't have a catch phrase so it's one of those songs you realize you like and have to go figure out the name. So that would have reduced the number of requests. For that reason it wasn't burnt out either.
This song makes me want to visit Cali during the summertime and cruise down this mystical highway while playing this song on full blast. Must've been something growing up in the 70's with such beautiful music.
Man, was it ever...I was just a little kid between Texas and Chicago back then, but I'll never forget it...it takes me right back to that easy, laid-back feeling, and dreamy, light-minded vibe. My younger sister and niece roadtripping out West, found themselves there earlier today, sent me a pic of the sign, and the refrain instantly started playing in my mind and I just had to hear it again. Happy they got to see it.
I was only 2.5 when this song came out but remember those days strapped in the backseat of the car with all the great music playing. 1973 was IMO the peak of rock.
Used to love driving pch from LA to Ojai to visit a friend. Great to play this song on the way. My friend died couple of years ago. Hard to listen to the song for all the memories but its a great song and so is this video...so was my friend. I miss him
It so funny how people see this video from all over the USA ,the world wish I go there!! I live in Venture I drive down PCH to Los Angeles to work and back for years . Just have to stop and see how bless you are living in America."STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS "
If you had gone north on 101 up to Santa Barbara and beyond, Ventura Highway is like the Colorado Rockies meet the sea!! Beautiful! Take another trip and go north!!!!
This song brings back to me a place that I wished I was rather than where I was. It made me sad that I was where I was instead of there traveling down the road and FREE!!! No matter the words of this song of which I did not really get I wanted to be on that highway traveling somewhere away from everybody and everything!!!
+Augford P. Doggie Yes that's just how i imagine it, for some people this side of the pond California has an almost mystical quality, and as you say, even fellow Americans feel the pull of the place due to the magic. I am so Envious of you:)
Jackie Cottrell you should go and visit. joshua tree, death valley, pacific coast highway, yosemite, cost you about 2000 dollars its worth it. i had to leave america though, it was too painful for me to watch what was happening to my country
+Augford P. Doggie If i ever can afford it, i certainly will:) In light of what you have also said, hopefully i will see it before everything changes, believe me, things are happening here in England too, London is completely unrecognizable now compared to when i was growing up. So sorry you had to leave, must have been hard, Europe is also under siege, so no escape here.
America's great hits of the early 70s contain a deep sadness; the last days of the Vietnam War, disillusionment together with nostalgia for a Southern California idyll.
I heard this song yesterday as I was getting on the Blue Ridge Pkwy driving home from work...started crying as it has always been my favorite "road song" and as a SoCal native who now lives in VA, it made me a little homesick. I love the way you've captured the essence of the West Coast and brought back so many memories of the 44 years I lived there. Thank you =)
Thank you for posting. I took my 3 Goldens down to the beach everyday just south of Carpenteria. My dogs would crash through the waves beyond the surf to chase storks. We relocated to Florida - I had to put my beautiful Makana down 5 months after we left just 4 months ago. It broke my heart and this songs makes me think of him.
I hitched across the country in 1970-back and forth. Yes, this was the America I remember. Life was so much easier. Great song. Great memories and Great country.
I was born in the mid 60s and remember this beautiful song. Back then the lyrics ment happier times, but when you read the lyrics carefully it has more ominous connotations. It was ahead of its time. Still, one of my faves.
Grew up on America and always loved this song. Now, I'm living in Ojai and working in Santa Barbara for a 3 month contract. Take this drive every day and stop at Seacliff Beach to let the dogs romp in the ocean till that same sunset turns the sky a panoramic orange nightly. I think I'm starting to fall in love with this area, too.
While Unconscious with TBI therapist put headphones on me after yrs...can hear again. Thank you Universe and My older Brothers Musical influence back in the day.
And I'm thankful you and I can both remember this song. I'm a recovering TBI person, from 2010, but, you never ever fully get over it, recover from it. Its always been baby steps for me. Hearing, eyesight, etc were affected. But, I remember this song, and the peace and calm it always left me with after listening to it. Never been to Cali, perhaps some day. Hang in there Cici

@@cicijolie2985 Hi Cici Jolie ; ) I totally agree with you on so many of your points. Five years ago, after much searching, I found a place to live with five acres, at the very end of a road. Its also ten minutes from civilization. I thought yeah, this ought to be quite, shouldn't get much foot traffic, vehicle traffic. It was great, until my direct neighbor that we got along with, well he foreclosed and moved. In moved in a family with eight teen and twenty something children. They found out my history, and have done nothing but attempt to take advantage of me. They steal my things, run their dogs on my property, trespass constantly, rude in limited conversations, what they cant steal they break, etc... I get along with other neighbors just fine. All I wanted was to be left alone, mind my own business.
I used to be s master gardener, so I plant and grow things still. That neighbor watches me, then comes over whenever I leave my place, and either kills my plants, or steals them. I still have medical appointments, so I leave my place occasionally
Apparently I didn't move far enough away from civilization into the wilderness. Also, my place is at the very end of a road, thought this would be perfect
Just visited a good friend in Ventura yesterday, so was cruising the Ventura Hwy in the sunshine. This song gives me such a good feeling, it's songwriting poetry at it's finest.
I happened to come across this song on the radio while driving along the 154 to Solvang. Just earlier, we had actually been driving along the Ventura Highway itself.
This band is, was & remains to this the day, the ultimate sound & voice of my generation with their mellow sound, unique guitar strummin, vocals & soft rock. They are awesome. This song is one of my favorite traveling songs...Wishin on a fallin star, waitin on the early train, aw c'mon Joe, you can always change your name. Moonshine...Just pretty, pretty music. Nobody else like them. There is a star now for you guys but Dan Peek is shining off some where down over us.
The Ventura area is my home where I am from , where ever I am living in the world when I come home I travel that freeway and put on this song, great to be home again.
Love this great American band, " America " and this Awesome hit of theirs from 1972. I have fond memories of my childhood listening to this beautiful song on the radio in many family road trips and vacations on the coasts and in between. A Beautiful time in history of this great tune and all the other beautiful songs of that innocent time and Era. 💝
Saw America in concert the summer of 1983 in an outdoor field and they were FANTASTIC!! They played for over 2 hours and everyone was singing along. Got one of the worst sunburns of my life!! So love them!! They sound exactly the same live! 💕🤗
I've loved this song growing up. My first time going to CALI was last summer, and travel this highway. It was beautiful. Must of been back in the day also. Thank you America for this beautiful song, and all the music you've made that i love sooo much❤❤❤❤

Thank you for the nostalgia, both musical and visual. I've lived alongside Ventura Highway for 22 years, and am going back home to NC in 2 days. At my age I doubt I'll ever be back, so it's nice to see all the places - I recognize nearly every shot, even some of the rural roads off the 101. Your attention to detail - actually using scenes from VH instead of random CA highway shots, is what made this real for me. God bless, and happy new year!
Thanks for this... I've been in Idaho 20 years, yet my family and upbringing are in Santa Barbara... Driving to college at Humboldt State, past Ventura, I knew that I has 12 hours of 101 in front of me.
WOW, thz are some seriously powerful lyrics for sure: I absolutely love this song & this band. So peaceful... "Ventura Hwy in the sunshine where the days are longer; the nights are stronger than moonshine. You're gonna go...I know.. Cause the free wind is blowin' thru your hair & the days around your daylight there. Seasons crying, no despair. Alligator lizards in the air, in the air."
This group, *America,* was always 10 years ahead of their time. The quality of their sound (and their "look") was always 'on par' with any song in the 80s, but they achieved all that all the way back to the early 70s.
Had the most beautiful moment last summer I was on a boat ride to zephyr cove on Lake Tahoe when this song came on the music system , perfectly captured the beauty of my experience.
la primera vez que escuche esta cancion fue en 1978? nunca imagine que algun dia fuera a conducir por esa autopista lo hice por los años 93-97 bellos lugares bellos recuerdos, felicidades a ese pais por mantener lugares tan bellos
God bless you, thanks for posting this! It made me cry but in a good way! I am a VC native now living in GA and I get sooooo homesick at times, especially during the miserable summers here! But I do get to go home on occasion, which is great. In between times, I will just re-watch this post. Thank you!
This song reminds me of the desert. Me and my grandfather traveling across Nevada, Arizona, utah, etc… always on the highways, or dirt roads. Lonely highways, where we would talk and see the vast amazing desert. I always look at every mountain and wish I could climb it. Every creek I wish I could camp at. But we gotta get going, going, somewhere else, just as cool. The land people think is desolate is full of possibility. I love the west!
As a person really into Funk/Soul music at the time of this song's release, I always appreciated America's approach to the songs they performed/recorded. Really liked the guitar work on this song. Just so melodic. The repetition of the main guitar hook is just sooo darned effective. No wonder other artists covered the song in some form. Once in the mind, it's hard to 'forget' the great instumentation/singing.
This is a lovely rendition and the pictures make you want to just get out there and drive and re-discover your youth. I have only been to the USA once and just loved the place and fell in love while listening to this song driving along near Charlotte in NC. Best song from best group ever! And by the way, the Paul Hardcastle version with a lady singing (Rogers??) is just superb and in my mind eqauls the original version, if not supercedes it. I know some will shoot me for saying that!
Thank you for making and sharing this!!! The visuals are awesome and brings back so many good memories when I was stationed in Camp Pendleton and would drive to Santa Barbara to visit friends who went to school there and taking the Ventura Hwy :-)
Never heard this song till a few moments ago on a video about Mass Effect but man this song is invoking memories of my childhood pre-2012 and my elementary school days. Best moments of my life. Especially when I lived in Kansas and Florida.
Excellent song ! One of my favorite of America: thanks for this fantastic video from Italy ! I was in California in 1997 : perfect music for cruise.....
I ABSOLUTELY love the photos you picked to accompany this song. Haven't listened to it in years, but every time I do , it brings me back to a better time Fuking awesome 👍
Thank you, it was a lot of fun putting it together. I am glad my father and I took the opportunity to visit the area, and long enough to experience at least some of it. The memories of those six months in southern California has made this song very special to me. It used to make me feel sad listening to it as a kid. It doesn't make me feel that way anymore. Thank you for listening to it again, and for your comment. 🙂
On the drive home, I'm listening to the heavy metal sound of Three Inches of Blood. But when I'm browsing through the internet at midnight, I'm just relaxing to the sound of America. I'm sure fortunate to have such a wealth of music to pick from. Music from modern artists keeps me entertained when I need something fresh, but there's always the generous backlog of music given to posterity from generations before that will always give me something to fall back on when I just need that comfort of a familiar tune.
I think you did a great job on this video of Ventura! Perfect shots! I know where each one was taken, and I've lived here in Ventura for so many years now, and love this place...and you caught it all perfectly...to go with this much loved song! thanks ♥
This song epitomizes warmth, sunshine and joy. It takes you back to a lost world, to a less complicated and caring America.

Less complicated for sure

God bless you, thanks for posting this! It made me cry but in a good way! I am a VC native now living in GA and I get sooooo homesick at times, especially during the miserable summers here! But I do get to go home on occasion, which is great. In between times, I will just re-watch this post. Thank you!
One of the top ten best songs ever penned!!
Sounds like an awesome time. Bless your grandfather
One of the best songs i love this one
J'ai toujours rêver de découvrir l'Amérique, ce rêve à un nom :"Ventura Highway".
Great song from a great SoCal band. Great job with the pictures too. Thanks!
Best song ever!
And that's perfectly fine 😉
This song is even more stunning if you are indeed on highway one outside Ventura California. It is a beautiful place. I love Ventura.
Thanks for this. Looks and sounds like home in socal
You are very welcome, and thank you. Sorry about your friend, and I hope one day this song will help you to feel closer again. Best of wishes to you.
Never heard this song till a few moments ago on a video about Mass Effect but man this song is invoking memories of my childhood pre-2012 and my elementary school days. Best moments of my life. Especially when I lived in Kansas and Florida.
This Song reminds me when i traveled California in the 80`s.
What a cool video. Love the pics. I lived there for 7 years. Ahhh. Oh, and I got to see America in 2003 at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills!
I love the floating guitar sound
Beautiful song, for me more enjoyable than Horse with no name.
I like both songs.
Excellent...Great job!!
The open road,....yes. Thx America, for such a wonderful tune :D
Excellent song ! One of my favorite of America: thanks for this fantastic video from Italy ! I was in California in 1997 : perfect music for cruise.....
You're gladly welcome and thank you. Hello to Italy !!
Beautiful video...Thanks for uploading:)
Thank you... and very welcome :)
Oh man they're are tears ..tears.. tears ..all over the keyboard ! Thank you for putting this up !
I ABSOLUTELY love the photos you picked to accompany this song.
Haven't listened to it in years, but every time I do , it brings me back to a better time
Fuking awesome 👍
I know where each one was taken, and I've lived here in Ventura
for so many years now, and love this place...and you caught it
all perfectly...to go with this much loved song! thanks ♥
It takes me away from crappy michigan weather at times lol
