Whomever directed and produced this, captured the essence of the time and place perfectly. Summer 1979, NYC, Central Park and vicinity. I believe these were general admission, free concerts (Dr Pepper concerts in the park). I was barely a teenager growing up in Staten Island at the time. Watching this I can smell and taste the city.
and then there's us, that look on and wish we could have been there, Something about this video makes me think i was actually there in spirit. a strange feeling really i enjoy it, because its mine and i live in that reality, i was there and it gives me something i cannot really explain.
@@user-il4jx8wk7u I 1000% know what you mean. It's a world that thrives in my soul as if I was there. I'm writing a story that whenever I go into "storyland" transports me to this world even if in my imagination. It's so real to me, not like I'm conjuring it up in my imagination but rather searching to reconnect with a familiar world I was previously a part of and I seek anything out that brings it to life... From merely a vision in my mind or a feeling to my real life. Whether watching old footage or collecting ephemera. Holding a souvenir of the past. Bringing it to life.
The music was driven by a broad range of true creativity, concert ticket prices weren't controlled by greedy corporations, health-care costs and insurance weren't big issues, people were in some ways more broad-minded, the diet was better (see all the thin people?), and the political divide, while present, was not polarized to the extreme. Yes, the 70s were great.
No mobile phones so people communicate and interact with each other, you go anywhere now and people don’t even look where they’re going half the time because they’re buried in their phone instead of being buried in beaver or vice versa lol.
The footage here is fantastic, what a VIBE!! I grew up with the band and love their music. “America” was the 1st album I purchased as a young teen. Ahhh the memories…☀️☀️☀️
@@herbcat9 I hear you! I’ve got 3 turntables. One is at my “happy place” that has no WiFi it’s where I go to unplug-unwind every summer. Many of the albums there were purchased at thrift stores for $2 a piece. My teen granddaughter is a musician and wants my albums / they’re like gold to me still and I can’t part with them, just yet.
What a brilliant video!! It seems to capture those awesome summer nights that we all had back in the old days. We did not have the internet, cellphones, 200+ cable tv channels, etc. All we had was the music and each other. It was a time that I would give almost anything to back to. Thanks for the music, guys!!!
I'm still singing this song and other America's songs during drinking sessions with my buddies. I used to sing these songs way back 1980's. Now I'm a Senior Citizen in Lanao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines . . . still singing (25 January 2023).
I am now 69. Was a junior in HS when their first lp came out. Had it on 8track. There was no racism…everyone was happy, having fun..in love…..First lp reminds me of my first love, second lp reminds me of my second love and Hearts was when I met my future wife in 1975, married her in 78……still married today! So many wonderful memories when we hear America.
Hit after wonderful hit and America was the soundtrack of my early teens. My first boyfriend told me that whenever he heard “I need you,” he always thought of me.
OMG…brings back so many concerts I went to in the 70’s. Unfortunately I never saw America, but EVERYTHING captured in this video was EXACTLY the way I remember. What a cool “flashback”. Those days were so easy and carefree.💗
yeah Hugh, a LOT happier time. No internet (which is a biggest library in the world, and a great tool, if used correctly), no cell phones, great 70's music on the car radio....great time to be alive.
That in itself would be worth the time travel back. But the music was fabulous. Yeah, there are always a few good songs out there (and crap), but nothing can touch the 70s (and early 80s), in my opinion. If I never heard a song again not recorded during the 70s, I'd be okay with it. Best music overall.
I am a new fan of America as of two months ago. I was a little kid in the seventies but I had 4 siblings 10 plus years older than me so I am familiar with these songs. The thing is I had no idea who the band was or the fact that all these hits came from the same band. I discovered this on YT. WOW! I did a search and America is touring! I have tickets to see them in Lowell MA July 13. I can't wait! Great music will never get old and always get new fans!
Just look how these young men SHINE!! Innocence is on every corner. Innocence of a much diff time. Just look at the excitment in the streets & a fresh feel in the air! The park where the skaters are hanging together & dancing. Then of course, the young men of America itself! At .44 seconds in you can hear it in the giddiness of their voices & see it in the dimples of Gerry’s grin! (Have mercy☺️❤️👌). He is very open here as he admits that he had been terrified of the Big City. This is the way life shld be. As we go, slowly expanding our horizons as we grow. Now it is happening way too fast & we are desensitized as very young children & nothing is a thrill anymore. We lose parts of ourselves that we’ve never even gotten to know yet. Something has to come! Breaking us free from the bondage we can not see but certainly can feel the results of its presence lost. Nothing but God putting it right again will suffice, NOTHING!!!
I have this concert on dvd. I would like to go back and be an America groupie. Very fortunate to have rediscovered their music. Even more fortunate that Gerry and Dewey still tour and I got a chance to see them recently. Will be seeing another America show in June.
My Wife and I visited New York and Yes it still has the street performers( who are very good) and all the taxis, and yes the horse drawn carriages in Central Park. New Yorkers should hold their heads up High. For such a metropolis its a beautiful place with a lot of History!
The year I was born...was only in the 70's for 30 days but am so glad I was there...and so thankful to my parents for introducing me to this band when I was a teenager..thank you so much for posting this amazing video! :)
This is so awesome, I lived in Florida and America was my favorite band in that day!!! I was so young I couldn't have made it there in New York if I had tried, lol
Such a shame Dan Peek decided to leave the band in '77... He didnt sing lead on many songs but I loved "Lonely People" which I felt was maybe how he was feeling within the group. They were a great trio but then became a duo with a backing band... R.I.P. Dan
@@danicegewiss862 I think you'll find that Beckley and Bunnell were the main singers in the group although Peek did contribute as backing singer on all of their biggest hits and lead on a few. He wrote or co-wrote 4 Top 100 hits including "Lonely People" which he wrote with his wife Catherine.
I have rediscovered America and I saw them two times this year and meet Gerry and Dewey both times. You will totally enjoy the show and they are very accessible to their fans so I hope you get a chance to meet them. Get the America Live Musik Laden on Amazon and enjoy them back in the day (great session with all three of them.)
I saw saw America in concert in the late 70's, great concert. This looks like it was an outdoor concert with "festival seating" meaning there were no assigned seats. So people got there early so they could get good seats.
Yo también amo este grupo, es mi favorito. Tengo la fortuna de haberlos conocido en persona hace ya algunos ayeres. Este video es el que más me gusta. Saludos desde México.
They truly are the definition of rock stars at this time At first I thought it was a shot from a blimp since I’m unfamiliar with views from penthouse suites at ritzy NYC hotels .. it’s still only 2/3 of America without Dan .. Willie Leacox is the poster musician for70s soft rock drumming 🥁

I loved this song when I was a kid, and I always thought that they were calling Sir Galahad the Tin Man, you know because he's a Knight and he wore a suit of armor!!!😀😀
I loved America and "A Horse With No Name" was my favorite. When horse was in the context of anything back then, it was about heroin. I didn't care for the mid 70's and afterwards music but they were really good.

We are currently living in the most dangerous time in human history. Great to waddle down memory lane to less dire days.

Yes but there were a lot of serial killers, so...
