When he recorded this, he was 21 years old. This was his debut single in the US and it went straight to #1 for two weeks (March 12th & 19,th 1988) ... three months later, his follow up song, "Together Forever," also went to #1 for a week (June 18th).
In recent years, this became a famous meme/gif as why Rick Astley is the perfect boyfriend ... cause "he's never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you ... never gonna make you cry, never gonna say good bye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you."

Together Forever is another big Rick Astley hit from back in the day. Rick was part of a wave of pop music produced by a production trio called Stock, Aitken and Waterman. They were responsible for a formula of catchy, synth based hits from the mid-80s to the early 90s, including songs that launched artists such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Dead or Alive, Bananarama and Sonia.

Jay, your reaction is the same as everyone in the USA when they first heard him sing. Some people even said there must be some ugly dude with a great voice and Rick was lip syncing. He still occasionally performs this song for fans for all ages in clubs. Wikipedia calls his genre "blue eyed soul," which is kind of silly and maybe a bit rude. This song is a guilty pleasure for millions. Rick Astley was born in 1966 and has remained married to the same lady.
