What makes never gonna give you up a great song are some simple things.
In his voice you can feel he means it to who ever it's ment for. There is emotion and feeling there.
While it was very low budget with him just using clothing he owned in a rather random place. He looked like he was having a good time and enjoying himself along with everyone else in it. In the fact it didn't have the feel that productuon was putting pressure. More like everyone was relaxed and going with the flow.
He was recently Rick Rolled himself.
The guy who rickrolled him got so many awards that he has Reddit Premium until 2029.

It WAS rather annoying though, when every fool was making everything into a Rickroll.
It's one thing to have it happen once in a while, being totally unexpected and appreciated the joke from time to time.
But when people were getting to the point that they would never wanna click on any link, assuming that they're going to be Rickrolled, even if they actually were not. Well, that's when you know that too many fools had killed the joke.
We can look back now and laugh.
But for a time there, it honestly did get utterly ridiculous.

The song is a reminder of how different things were back then. People were a lot less self-conscious and there was a feel good factor that is missing today. This is really why this song became so popular. The meme was just an excuse to listen to what is arguably a guilty pleasure kind of song

Rick Astley is someone important to those who lived those beautiful years of the 80s
This is still my favorite 80's song. It's my husband and my song when we first started dating in March '87. I had heard of Rickrolling but didn't understand what it was or how it started, so thanks for the explanation. Rick has a great voice and I am glad it has helped him relaunch his career. I don't know him personally, of course, but glad he kept the iconic song as is. It was that perfect window into some of the best lighthearted dance music of the era.

What makes it cool to be "Rickrolled" is that the song is actually quite good and most of the time, I let the song play all the way through.

Rickrolling did get rather annoying for a brief moment of time, because too many people were going mental creating Rickroll videos.
So it got to the point that many people would not wanna click on any links anymore, as they would assume that it was gonna be just another tedious Rickroll.
It was everywhere!!! You could be trying to look up something serious, and it would constantly jump out at some point... Rickroll, Rickroll, Rickroll, Rickroll, Rickroll, Rickroll, Rickroll....
The first few times one would be Rickrolled, it was funny. But it did genuinely become a bit of a pain for so many people.
It's only really after some years, and the trend dying out, that people can now look back and laugh at it.
But it wasn't always something to laugh about. It did genuinely become a damn nuisance for so many after way too many people were actually killing the humour of it.
