First of all, this is by far the best Behringer wasp demonstration. Second, imo from all the Behringer synths this one has the most vintage character and grit.
Thanks! I still prefer Pro-1 but get what you're saying
Well i just got delivered pro-1 today. :)
@@ThalDravv Excellent choice. Let me know what you think, if you like
I absolutely love it. I have many VSTs, good ones, but this what i was missing, in your face, fat, springy sound that pops out. Love Crave as well. Wasp is is next, not so sure about others, maybe the ub-xa when it comes out.
I have the Wasp, Cat, Pro One and Neutron. I actually like the Cat the best. It is very rich harmonically and different from any other synth I have owned.
I think you've become my favorite channel for checking out gear. Direct simple and you can actually get good sound out of the instruments you use. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks! Much appreciated
Its interesting, watching this and then going back through songs i listened to in the 8o's (synth pop) and to know that the wasp was used by a lot of groups back then. Some great sound come out of this little product. Nice demo, hope to pick one up later this year.
Hands down best Wasp Deluxe demo on CZcams!
Thanks!
this is really good. thank you for taking the time to show it off. its a yes from me
The WASP has an interesting sound, most of the time it has its own sound, but at times it gets near to a Minimoog sound, while still being distinctive.
The mid 70s to mid 80s was such an interesting era for synths, I guess a bit like the 50s and 60s for electric guitars. Thankfully Behringer are bringing back some of these eccentric gems, such as the WASP. The originals are very rare here in Australia, in spite of many years scouring ebay and gumtree, I've never seen one for sale here (and I bet it would be VERY expensive if I were to find an original.
So I believe Behringer are actually doing a great service by keeping these synths alive in our minds, in our hands and our MUSIC. The originals are still an option, so its all very democratic I believe!
For those who argue these are "rip offs" I don't agree. Intellectual rights law cover the patented/copyrighted designs. In regards to 70s and 80s synths, patent and copyright law has already expired.
IMAGINE THIS: If the first person to invent the modern acoustic guitar held an indefinate patent on their invention... it would stifle other guitar makers and deprive the public of affordable guitars. The whole idea of patents (I think they expire in about 30 years) is to BALANCE individual or company innovation and the public good.
If you are too snobby to use Behringer because of the brand name, ask yourself this: Does your audience even care? Its all about SOUND and CREATIVITY!
I fully agree on most what you've said. I'd only wish that Behringer would stay away from cloning equipment that is still available (like the Swing, for example). In my opinion it's not necessary, even less considering that Behringer does such a great job with their synths.
I totally agree... I heard some Moog tones but its still a unique sound... pretty impressive, especially for the price...
@@toddthomas4761 It certainly has character but I've returned mine.
@@limbicbits HA! I love everything Behringer is doing right now but I can't afford to keep it all!
I bought this but had to return it, as it would'nt play above middle C. I got a full refund but this must've been a rare factory fault. I agree Behringer went too far with the Swing. No need to clone something still in production. What would've been much better is for Behringer to improve the design (no on/off switch even!). Also, the Keystep Pro is so expensive, why did'nt they "borrow" some ideas from that?!
really cool demo, classic IDM :)
SUCH AN EMOTIONAL SOUND. AWESOME
best wasp demo on youtube ! well done
Your first patch in the video is wonderful for the kind of music I make (tech house and ambient).
Proof that BOC circa a few old tunes had a time machine
Excellent demo!!!!!!! I had to suscribe! 😁😃👍
You do good sound demos Limbic. Thanks.
This thing sounds excellent!
It sounds fantastic!
Actually this is really good. I have not seen alot of videos on this. But i do enjoy its vintage sound.
Nala eel It does have a very vintage sound
quality demo, appreciated, thanks
Love this synth. I got one 2nd hand in 1980. It's a modulation powerhouse. You can achieve some amazing rhythmic patterns using the lfo and the 2 looping envelopes. And the bandpass filter is a thing of beauty. Behringer have done a great job on recreating it.
Maybe this one is a bit underrated but it sure has a very vintage sound.
@@limbicbits yes it has a unique "springy" buzz to it. I've still got the one I bought in '80, but it's in a very sorry state. The case deteriorated to the point of destruction and it's all stored in a black bin bag in the corner of the room next to my dead Polysix. I call it "Project Corner". I have done for years, sadly. They sit there, silently mocking me.😂
@@TheDavidPoole uhhh- I know those "project corners" too well. And I hate them.
@@limbicbits yes. They smell faintly of tears, and regret.
This demo is superb, outstanding, marvelous. Thank you! I subscribed! I was waiting for the CAT to come out, but now that I checked your video, I no longer know which one to get. I will probably end up getting both in the next five years, but which one should I get first? I have no idea now. You have me completely puzzled.
Thanks for the sub! Between these two, I'd get the CAT first as it provides more low end and is more flexible. May I also add the just announced Dreadbox Typhon to your list? It's within the same price range (more or less) and just blew me away sound wise.
Thanks. Some great sounds in there.
El mejor video en CZcams del wasp con diferencia !!!!! ya esta pedido en Thomann jejejeje
Best Demo in the Net.
love the warmth in it - reminds me of the old artificial intelligence compilations
Nice demo. Thanks. Fun little thing: I have an original Korg MS-20 fra 1978, and I think there are actually some similarities between the beefyness of the bass and the somewhat gritty filter.
Great demo, thanks 👍
love the demo! Some Plaid-esq soundz
Thanks! I really like IDM and ambient so this is a great compliment
Wow fantastic!!
Honestly love this synth. It almost has a sound that is like a combination of the model d(minimoog) and a td3(303), kind of. Idk if that makes sense. But the wasp has a unique sound and the filter absolutely rips
This sounds great.
Man totally sounds like BOC
What i thought also
Had to check the comments to see if someone already said this ;-)
my thought, exactly
Can't deny my love for ambient and IDM, I guess.
@@limbicbits Same here. I bought one based on your video. After having it for a week I think is criminal how much BOC milked this synth!!! There is almost no way of making it not sound like Boards the moment that you use a little bit of pitch mod! Totally hidden gem and no doubt one of their main lead line synths IMHO. Its one of the most unstable drifting synths I have ever used! So nostalgic sounding its crazy.
God these are so beautiful!
Good job.
Nice demo. I bought this 2 weeks ago and I love it. Although, the downside is via midi it only can play 3 octaves. But the sound quality and gain is outstanding. Filter can self oscilate as well. It's a good addition to my vintage synth collection. I wanna buy the Cat as well when it's available.
Only three? I've counted four but didn't pay too much attention. Even worse than I thought... Maybe it's something a FW-update could fix.
@@limbicbits haha, doesn't matter. But I like how it sounded. The filter is outstanding and the envelope is unique. Like all synths, it will shines with fx, like distortion, delay and reverb
How many octaves are in your midi controller, Yaya? I should think if I bought one and attached it to my S90XS, it would cover the pitch range of all 88 Keys. Is that a mistake on my part?
@@Shred_The_Weapon I'm using old Yamaha KX88. With it, it only covers 3 octaves. I think it would be the same with other keyboard controller.
Can you still adjust the semitones via the oscillator section?
Fantastik melodie!
Esse synth tem timbres e recursos muito bons !! Fico imaginando quanto custará um no Brasil. E se chegará a ser vendido aqui.
Atualmente, custa menos de 2.500,00
Phantastic
Nice Demo! Got mine for 129$, amazing synth! So is all the Behringer synths tbh
(not only) at this price point, this synth is amazing. But it certainly has a particular sound you either like or not.
@@limbicbits czcams.com/video/KYvmEBKzMaU/video.html Whats not to like about it, LFO store did some patches and This person here made a full track with it as well it also showcases the Full strength of the Synth czcams.com/video/HMP7ejrWicc/video.html
@@limbicbits It's sure better than a VST imo
Sounds lovely. Any surprises? How well does it track pitch across the keyboard? Nice job 👍.
Tracking is ok. The biggest disappointment was, that it seems to accept only four octaves via MIDI despite the oscillators being capable of a much wider range.
@@limbicbits That is a pity. Thanks a lot.
@@marike1100 absolutely!
@@limbicbits The original Wasp was also only 3 octaves. It's an excellent clone of the original. Love it!
Good Video!!!
I think I'm 🤔 convinced this is gonna be my first Behringer desktop synth
Amazing synth. I have to get one of these.
Seems like the best/most synth for the money ever. $200...
@@holygeneration7 I didn't like the filter or sync on the CAT and subs aren't useful to me. Pro-1 is the best followed by wasp for character in my taste.
@@holygeneration7 Nice, both seem to be awesome. Haven't tried either but had a SH-101 years ago. Pro-800 is next for me, the Pro-1 is my default go to mono.
I never tried to get an original Wasp. It always struck me as the ultimate idiosyncratic synthesizer. Listening to this demo, I could sort of imagine getting this module.
Wouldn’t mind knowing the reaction of Chris Hugget to this module.
Yes - that would be an interesting question. Also, I would like to know how close is Doepfer's Wasp filter to the original in comparison to this one. Personally, I prefer the modular version over the one Behringer uses. Doepfer's wasp filter sounds grittier and more chaotic at high resonances what I really like.
This is going to sit underneath my neutron and my crave when I sell some gear
Hi, thanks for the demo I think it sounds great! Someone mentioned double triggers is this a problem you've encountered?
Thanks! I’ve heard about this issue but really didn’t encounter it when doing the demo. It might have something to do with the retrigger function of the envelope which is not always clear at first sight. Or maybe I’ve just been lucky with a unit that worked
@@limbicbits great to hear your seems fine! I'm thinking about getting one but it feels a little risky if it aint working as expected. :/
I love how tiny it is and surprise about its very organic analog power .. Always thought DCOs can sound warm too in right synth. More than the Bass Station II.
I would love this kind of architecture in multitimbral module since Behringer seams going to reduce even more the dimensions of their instruments within the new chip coming.
The most exciting news to me in this context was that we might expect an Oberheim Matrix Clone in future.
These are not DCOs, these are digital oscillators.
@@rars0n Are not the DCOs "Digital Controlled Oscillators" =DCO?
@@effebidi9677 DCOs are not the same thing as digital oscillators. A DCO Is an oscillator controlled by a digital voltage signal. They were designed to help alleviate tuning issues in analog synths using VCOs, in particular polyphonic synths, like the Juno series.
Digital oscillators, on the other hand, are just entirely digital.
@@rars0n ah... did not know it
Is this good for Trance saws? I'm trying to think of a good example... Like the lead from Inside of me(murder remix) I'm looking for that gritty Saw Lead that most european hard trance songs have. I have the sound for z3ta+ Plugin, but i want to branch out to ALL hardware and leave VST's behind.
You can get these kind of sounds from a lot of synths but WASP Deluxe wouldn't be my first choice. If you'd like to switch to hardware, Access Virus (second hand A or B should do the job), or a Roland JP 8000 will cover it 100%. If you prefer to buy new, Novation Peak is a great and flexible alternative: www.thomann.de/intl/novation_peak.htm?offid=1&affid=397
Can Valhalla be applied to my life and make it instantly better?
LOL
Yes, if you die a warriors death in combat, Valhalla awaits you!
No, that would be the Strymon BigSky
The good news: is yes, you can go to Valhalla. Bad news: You need to die with your fighting boots on and your sword in your hand!
Yes of course. Also, work hard on improving your synthesis skills to impress the ladies.
Wow I think it's hard to choose from all their monos nowadays! I have Model D but I want something with a bit more edge. Would this be it or would you recommend any of the others? K2, Pro-1 and CAT? Thanks!
My favorite is Pro-1 out of their line. But as you’ve said „more edge“ I guess that K2 and wasp would fit even better. Out of these two I’d choose K2 as it has a rougher character.
I would also say the K2 can easily go from clean and beautiful to raw and edgy. Next go with the Pro One or the D.
I can hear 70,s Doctor who sounds in here Silurians on the beach with guns.
Bout sold me on your exact setup here
Great demo! Best I've seen for this synth.
Is it just the synth with this midi controller that we hear? Nothing else at all?
And is it just plug and play between this midi controller and synth?
Glad you like my comment but can you answer it too please? 😄😄

Haven't got a clue how to play keyboard and I still want this thing.
Me neither, that's why I focus more on sound programming ;)
Is the 'Q' supposed to be resonance? I'm curious why it sounded like reverb. 7:32
Q is Resonance like you’ve mentioned. I made the cut one time without and one time with external reverb (Valhalla room). This might have caused the confusion
Fantasic!
Definitely BoC vibes at the beginning
1. sollte ich mir die wasp für 160€ holen oder lieber die Finger davon lassen?

Nice vintage sounds but no cv and gate in ? What am i supposed to do with this, i do not own any midi controllers.
this is such a good sound demo
Thanks!
It's great - it was a real eureka moment for me when I heard the BOC style leads and realised it wasn't a Moog. Just ordering mine now :-)
They make some truly beautiful sounding synths for so little money. It's amazing. The more I listen to your demos the more I'm convinced you're a well known music producer or at least should be. Do you make tracks or you just like to play with gear?
Thanks! Currently, I'm focussing more on Sound Design but yes, I also make music (mostly Ambient, Melodic Techno and IDM).
@@limbicbits Where can I hear it?
Is that "ENH" or "SNH" for sample and hold?

Lynn Skaggs I think all of these Behringer Desktop units and all of the Korg Volcas will be sought after one day.
@@josephwright5921 Me too. Like, imagine how much a Volca Mix is going to be on eBay in fifteen years.
Lynn Skaggs Yep, maybe the mixer will be worth a little. They all have some sweet spots. We are probably due for a new one or two Volcas soon, if the world ever starts back up again.
why are there only three octaves on my midi keyboard with this synth, and why does this synth not responding to pitch bend on my midi keyboard? any help is highly appreciated.
Wasp seems to only support three octaves (at least it was the case when I did this demo). I don’t get it and imo this is one of the main design flaws here
gosh what a jungle maschine.
Organic sounding for having digital oscillarors
I hope they're paying you because you sold this and the cat tonight. I wasn't really even considering either of them but if I can make them sound a fraction of as good as you do, they'll be worth every penny. BTW, what are you using for effects?
Thanks! As a good starting point you could use the video (on pause) to copy the settings and thus maybe also learn how to create sour own patches. In most of my videos I use the Valhalla DSP line (delay, Vintage room and shimmer) which is great in so many ways.
Looking forward to the CAT
same
Me too. I'd sit the WASP out gor the Pro One and Cat.
Yeah, the Wasp just doesn't really do anything for me. The Cat, on the other hand, goes right off the deep end if you want it to. I love the crazy sounds that are possible with the Cat.
@@rars0n I have CAT, Model D, TD3 and Crave. Absolutely amazing synths for the price of, let's say an expensive eurorack case😂
@@distortimus7631 Yeah, I agree. I've got the Model D and TD-3, and they're both awesome. I'm even coming around to changing my mind on the Wasp.
Just for my understanding that moment at 3:02 asks for an equalisation cut right? I mean it is slightly too high for comfort, please advice me.
In demo videos, I usually avoid using any EQs. You can do whatever you want if it sounds good to you. Or didn't I get the question?
@@limbicbits I am trying to figure out if I get equalisation right,/ if I am using my ears right, would you say that for recording it would be usual to make a cut in the high end at 3:02?
@@robertsteinberger5667 ah! Rather than targetting primarily the high end, I'd aim for some resonance peaks in the mids and upper mids. But cutting out some of the high-end can be beneficial, too. Especially, if you'd like to place it a bit more in the background.
Just a workflow recommendation. Your approach is absolutely ok as it has been done that way for decades and is still done that way. But given all the advantages in a DAW I'd always record the signal raw first and add EQ, compression, etc later. Especially when learning (well, you never stop learning but I guess you get what I'm trying to say) this will help you to try different things.
Hi mate, quality video, I have a few questions, I have produced for some time but I am new to analogue synth's... I am considering buying the Wasp and a drum machine along with the behringer TD-3, but how do I connect them to a DAW? Do I need a hardware mixer to plug them all into? Or say if I just wanted to record the Wasp synth, can I just plug it directly into my soundcard or laptop through USB and record it live.
Sorry for the long questions, any help is much appreciated.
Hi mate, the wasp only receive midi through Usb, so for recording you'll need a mixer or an interface .
@@Plaxibo cheers for that mate, I’ve got an audio interface, i’m just unsure how to get audio working, I have ordered a jack to XLR, do I just plug this in the back of the synth, into the audio interface? I know that sounds like a daft thing to ask I just want to be certain of what I’m doing. I’m new to hardware
@@TehDawg yes, that should do the trick, though you should use a 1/4" jack into your interface. Most interfaces have a line in input or a "combo input" so you can connect an xlr or an 1/4 jack.
Holy crap, it's a BoC machine
Amazing bang for buck now too. £164 for this is hard to resist.
is there always that attack clicky sound or is it just the audio clipping? The sounds are great but my ears get stuck on the clicky attack
Yes, by raising the VCA attack a bit. You can see it at 9:35
How do you break it to make it sound like the old Whitehouse records?
Haha! You don't need to break it for that - you just need the real thing. This is a nice demo, but it really just proves that it sounds nothing like the real Wasp (I can proudly say that I own an OG).
Sounds very much like my Bass station mk 1
interesting that you mention that. Afaik Chris Hugget (RIP), who invented the WASP also played a huge part in the development of the Bass Station.
Got the Moog sound.
I respectfully disagree and would describe it more as gnarly, not so fat. Also, the Multimode Filter adds a very strange character to the signal especially when using high resonance settings.
Boards of Canadaaaaa
How is this connect to the key step? Midi or usb?
Hi, it's connected directly via MIDI to the key step, although USB with a computer in between would be possible as well.
What reverb did you use in the last example 10:54 ?
It's been a while but I'm pretty sure that you can hear a Valhalla DSP Shimmer there
When I was 18 the most affordable way to get your hands on analog gear was to go to college and today this thing is $150
i wanted to hear the HPF :)

Yes! czcams.com/video/KIk9jU-XmmA/video.html
Behringer has been wacking out all kinds of cheap synths lately but this one might actually be worth the money
How do you make it play by it self?
The envelope can be set into loop mode. Or do you refer to the sequences? In this case, the internal sequencer of the keystep controls the WASP
I can read Arturia on the keyboard, does anyone know what model this is?
Arturia KeyStep Black Edition (limited).
@@limbicbits thanks!
Im going to get a keystep
1:50 roygbiv?
Hi what operating system are you using and what daw
When making music, I use Mac OSX and Ableton. These demos usually are done without connecting a DAW
Limbic Bits thank you
Having a K2, I still don't know if the wasp will add something... I'm not sure if the Wasp can do sounds than K2 couldn't.
I found the WASP a bit smoother and the loop able envelope is cool. But then there is something in its sound that I don’t dig. If searching for an alternative I’d rather have a look at Pro1 or Cat. Both are different enough to coexist with a K2
@@limbicbits Thanks. Now I hesitate between a model D and the odyssey ^_^.
lol - at least this choice is easier as both sound even more different
@@limbicbits It's hard for me to say because when I watch demo of synths... people do the same techno / high resonance sounds and all sounds the same.
@@BarbieChaite In this case, you might just want to give it a try. Model D is almost never a bad choice (for all styles of music), although I personally have some kind of a hate love for that Moog sound. First, I always love them - and still do - but as soon as I tried to include a Moog synth into my tracks, I almost always ended up replacing it with an SH-style synth as I find it to fit better.
Same with Odyssey or Cat. Both great synths but they have a cutting dominance in the mid tones that I don't like too much.
