As a Canadian (we also start school in September), the idea that August is the beginning of fall is INSANE to me. We’ve also had a cold summer here, but when my kids start school next week it’s going to be hotter than it has been all August, so yeah it’s NOT FALL YET!
I’m an American and to hear so many people say it’s fall already gets to me because I was born at the end of August (the 25th to be specific) and I refuse to say I’m a fall baby, I am a summer baby. I’ve never had to go to school on my birthday which adds to that but August is still summer for me. I love fall so much (sweater weather is upon us 🙌🏾) but until we pass Labor Day weekend I am still in summer mode 😎💚
SCREAMING at the Nancy Drew games reference! I love those games and my mum (who is English) had me convinced that no one in the UK even knows who Nancy Drew is. Definitely adding that book to my tbr.
I think the chances are higher that the dead will rise from the graves than that Megan will enjoy a story with multiple timelines and povs.

The way you describe In the Lives of Puppets is almost exactly how I felt about The House in the Cerulean Sea. 😆 Down to the fact that the kids all felt one note, like they each just had a schtick and not much more. 💚💛

oh my god i've felt THE EXACT SAME while reading in the lives of puppets! as someone who gave the house in the cerulean sea 4 stars and under the whispering door 5 stars i was really hoping in the lives of puppets to give off the same amazing vibes but unfortunately i gave it 3 stars 🤕 great video as always meg🥰💛
40:49 In the USA Different areas get out/return to school at different times. Like in the south school gets out in May and returns in August. In the New England area school gets out early June and returns in September. Of course not every time but the majority.

I would disagree about Bridget Collins (who blurbed wayward) because she writes historical fantasy with original ideas and magic system and a strong writing style very atmospheric no plot just vibe, you might enjoy the binding by her 😉

I feel the same way as you do with TJ Klunes cozy books. In the Lives of Puppets wasn’t it for me but Under the Whispering Door is one of my all time favorite books

I haven't read it, but In the Lives of Puppets legit sounds like a book version of the Brave Little Toaster movie. Like, it might hit as nostalgic for people who liked (and somehow weren't traumatized by) that movie, but otherwise it would just be weird lol

It´s so interesting how different we read In the Lives of Puppets. I really enjoyed the first half and a bit and hated the ending. Especially the last 50 pages.😅 but yeah his others were SO much betterr

I've just started reading T Kingfisher books. I've read The Hollow Places and The Twisted Ones. I enjoyed both, really liked the characters, but I seem to have issues with how the books end. I preferred The Twisted Ones because there was more closure(?) for the story/characters. I plan to read Nettle and Bone next.

In the acknowledgments of In the Lives of Puppets TJ Klune kept saying a bunch of stuff about how it wasn't the book he was originally going to write and he had to do a lot of changes to the book and I'm just SO CURIOUS what his original idea was because I was also disappointed by that one!!

The US cover of Weyward would’ve gone perfectly with the color scheme, but I’m glad you didn’t buy it! I didn’t like it much either.
I liked the book but the cover is gorgeous
For me, the off the walls, unserious second half of Yellowface really hurt my enjoyment of it. It was so bananas that it lost some of its poignancy and I ended up rolling my eyes.
House with good bones was rough for me. I had to push myself to finish it because nothing actually happens 😢

As an American, August is still very much summer here, and September is the start of fall eventhough some of our states start their school years in August (southern states, what are you gonna do?!The Florida Man is real.And he lives for 'gator wrastlin' 🐊 🤣) In the Lives of Puppets was definitely my least favorite of the 3 from him, although I wouldn't put it into a purely cozy fantasy the 🤖 really gave me more of a sci-fi fantasy vibe with cozy elements?! Is that a thing?I gave it 4 stars, but it was a 3.5 really that I rounded up.🤷♀️I DNF'D Babel and the Poppy War so Yellowface was definitely not on my dance card. T Kingfisher is quickly becoming a favorite author. Loved A House with Good Bones and Weyward was not on my radar and remains squarely off it. And I don't have the patience required to get through a standard contemporary romance or as I like to call them Meh 😐 Contemporaries. 😉 My romances need to have magic, mystery solving, world saving or be on the...😏 um dark side ( Sophie Lark's serial killer duology or the like).
i’ll definitely be trying some abby jimenez as i’m always in the market for a non-cringe romance!

Have to agree Yellowface and In the Lives of Puppets did not hit or scratch any itch for me! Bit underwhelmed, I have Under the Whispering Door which I got from a free street library but I'm thinking of taking it back...

Okay before I watch I'm going to guess that I have not read more than 2 of these books. I don't read popular books because they don't align with my tastes at all so I think having 2 as a possibility is really ambitious.
Edit: yeah no so I've never read any of these but I did DNF Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett so maybe that can count? 😂
Also I think long romance books might be a taste for people who are primarily or exclusively romance readers. I read about 95% romance and I dislike romance shorter than 300 and shoot for 400 most of the time
I DNFd Weyward really quickly, and DNFd A House With Good Bones halfway through. Weyward I just couldn't get into, and I felt HGB just didn't have much happening and was taking too long to really get into the story.

I really enjoyed Your's Truly, but its my lowest rated novel by her. Abby Jimenez is one of my favorite romance authors and all her other books I've read are 5 stars. This was a 4.5 but still.

I think you would like “Not So Perfect Strangers!” It’s a thriller with a lot of really good racial commentary!
💚 I feel like Babel girlies and Yellowface girlies are two sides of a coin 😂 I loved Yellowface and thought it was genius and though Babel was just missing something. Gutted you didn’t like enjoy Weyward as I’ve got that on my tbr for autumn 😢
Puppets was such a huuuge letdown for me after loving Klune’s other work so much. Not that it’s *bad* but it didn’t emotionally resonate at all. Nurse Ratched was my favourite character, and that’s not great since she basically stops talking when they leave on their quest.
I think what he did well that didn’t work for me was that the book made me uncomfortable similarly to how Pinocchio made me uncomfortable as a kid. I can’t quite pinpoint why but I think of the scene where the boys turn into donkeys and I shudder. Puppets had similar moments for me.
That said, I’m soooo sad you didn’t like Weyward! I think I gave it 4.25 stars this year, and I absolutely would have had you read it had I been a guest on Booktube Twin Test. You love witches, and women!
Definitely a slow start for sure but the multiple timelines and how they came together really worked for me.
I have also really enjoyed TJ Klune’s books in the past but In the Lives of Puppets was really disappointing to me as well. I also thought it was super boring and it made me sad… I usually look forward to his books. Hopefully the next one is better!

I felt the same way about In The Lives of Puppets. It's too long and the schticks just kept going. I was SOOOOO disappointed and I really thought it was just me :( I ended up DNFing it, and I just really haven't been the same since. Maybe I will try again -- because I stopped about halfway through

The TJ Klune review is how I've felt about his other books. It's like he just tries too hard to get any sort of emotional response from the reader. Even though I want to like them, I just need to cut my ties with this author.
Also, if you had the north American version of Wayward, it would have fit the color scheme! 💛💚

I DNF'd In the Lives of Puppets after the first 100 pages.
I know you love RF Kuang books but you shouldn't cloud your feelings just because you loved her previous books. Yellowface, as a genre novel, is very basic, the twist is ridiculous and the writing style is basic, almost like a debut author, though she's not, she's supposed to do better. I rated it 2.5 🌟 and Babel was my favorite book from last year too. "A house with good bones" is not good if you've read "The twisted ones" or "The hollow places" by the same author beforehand. Too much social commentary and no thrills. When I read horror I wanna be entertained and shocked

Weyward bored me to tears! I know so many people loved it, but it just seemed to hit me over the head with "woe is me" feminism. It's just suffering detailed page after page after page, in three timelines.
You should try Wolf song by TJ Klune. That's a great book!
