    😂have the same fillings about all that has been said about entire process, that user goes through, after battery dies. Our died after 2 weeks. The only thing we didn’t do is give the car to the dealer. Cause every time it’s US $180 for check up(if not a warranty case, after diagnosis) We drove around for few days, check engine light cleared. Yep, reading manual was helpful too. Also what was interesting is to revive a call from a dealer out of state, we’re we got a car, that they were notified in the system that the check engine light is on and we may need to visit 😅

      Jean-Marc, no need to be sorry - you being very Canadian here 😆. I'm just lazy to drive the 600m drive, the biggest issue is to go with my gym bag and walk the distance. Some times I would drive around the neighbourhood so it can run a tad longer and use remote start so that it would start and operate a bit longer to allow it to charge the 12V a bit longer.

    This was very valuable information, especially the note on AC charging draining the battery. I have had Toytota plug ins sice 2005 and twice the 12V battery has died, and it is always when it is cold and always the battery hadto be replaced This makes me think to have battery tender installed on the NX which I oreordered.

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před rokem

      Do you drive short distances as well? cold weather tend to drop the voltage and cause a 50% charged battery drop to a point where it cannot start the vehicle. I think a battery tender is worth the money. I just wish to have it installed so that it can be easily plugged into or Toyota/Lexus should just update their system so that when charging the traction battery, it would fully charge the 12V battery as well. That way it shouldn't be a problem at all.

    The same thing happened to my NX450h+. I let my sister drive to the mountains. It was snowing and super cold. Her boyfriend was not feeling well at the part they went to. So he went inside the car and decided to take a nap for a few hours. The next day the car would not open. I believed that maybe he had started the car without pressing the brake pedal and the traction battery had zero miles. So the next day they asked for a jump start.
    So, maybe what happened was the 12 volt battery depleted after he went back to the party because of how cold it was.
    I don't have a place for a trickle charger, I don't have a garage or drive way, to prevent this from happening. But then again I live in LA and the lowest temperatures here are 7 or 5 Celsius. So maybe when we go to the mountains I have to take a jumper just in case

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před rokem +1

      Well, if he had not started the car and 2 hours of accessory mode - it won't drain the battery. Leaving a light on for 20 minutes it will turn off to save power, but in accessory mode it will not power off and will drain the battery. Like me driving very short distances would do the same no matter it is an ICE vehicle or PHEV. I really hope Lexus introduces some features that will detect low capacity and auto start the car with the traction battery to recharge the 12V. Or fully charge the 12V with the DC to DC charger while charging. I believe Hyundai has a button in the car to tell the car to charge the 12V from the traction/hybrid battery.

    @LSFT for information in France we have a recall on DCM communication module that can in certain circonstances drain the battery. I will not wait for my 1 year service to have this check if this problem can be a root cause of battery dry. As far as i understand, and you will probably confirm, as soon as we put ignition and system is in "Ready" mode, the system begins to charge the 12V battery. In that case if you do only very short trip, and as you have a garage, maybe it will be good 1 day per week, to keep the system in ready mode for 1h approx. This will allow the high voltage battery to charge the 12V battery through the DC/DC converter. In EV mode, A/C off, engine will not turn on.
    What is not normal is that it is recommanded to unplug as soon as charge is finished. Because when doing during the night, you are not going to wake up or monitor car charging to see when it is in 100%. If this scenario was draining the battery, it's up to developpement team to fix this issue, simply by having a software that monitor the 12V battery condition, and activate the DC/DC converter to recharge it as soon as needed.
    This is a quite annoying problem, because i buy a PHEV for my very short daily home to work travel and i do not choose the HEV to avoid engine start / stop working only in cold condition.
    But from time to time i have a very long trip.

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před rokem

      You are correct. If you start the vehicle it will start charging the 12V battery. I will show more details in my next video when I install the trickle charger. The car will actually power off if you keep it running for 1 hour. It has a system to ask if you want to turn it off after an hour. That could be one option to keep the battery charged. As long as you do not need that range the same day. But really, having the car run one hour may not eat too much into the range.
      Well, typically if you set it to charge up with the destination time, you won't need to keep it plugged in for too long. I typically now will plug it in around 7pm install of having it plugged in from 8am until it should start charging. That way it's not plugged in running for 12 hours before it starts charging. I always set it to charge up to the time I depart, unless it's like I go home to fully charge and start it immediately. So when it's done, I would go out and unplug it. I don't think you need to be that precise on unplugging it.

    I have my 2024 lexus nx350h luxury; owned it for 4 months and 3500 miles. yes the car will not start twice i since i owned it. the latest incident was scary because i was locked inside the car with all windows fully closed and didn't know how to get out. i had a short orientation on how to operate but never had an EV or hybrid car before so when lock inside and cannot get out i panicked, had shortness of breath, phone went dead after been using it to reset pin in lexus app. i could have died but luckily it happen inside my garage and just had little charge to call my wife before it went total dead. she came out out and panicked too even with card key and extra FOB key. i was able to instruct her to use the manual key but still wouldn't open after inserting the manual key; even i was trying my best to open from the inside for almost 20 minutes. she called 911 thinking maybe fire dept can jump the battery in case it's a dead battery. while fumbling everything inside including lexus overhead red emergency button, i was able open maybe it was a lever i was suppose to pull; i had been pushing the door unlock button the whole time. i was worried i was going to go unconscious if nothing works. later my wife said the last resort would have been to break the window of a brand new car over 70k car(58+10% tax+4500 prepaid maintenance+ 2500 cilajet coating by dealer+2000 frontal PPF) . i'm worried that if i have my daughter to come drive while i and wife out on three month out of the country vacation and this happens; i told her to come and drive it at least once a week. i wonder what the dealer will do because this is the second time it wouldn't start. last time a tint shop jump started it but they were not lock-inside unlike me. check engine light came on after they jump started. i drove to another city lexus dealer where i bought but then lexus said nothing to diagnose because the check engine light disappeared. after hours so can't get any help from dealership or lexus headquarter.

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Looks like your 12V battery died while you were trying to reset the pin on the Lexus app and the Lexus Interface. It's important that the dealership should have showed you how to manually open the door when the car battery is died. You pull the lever twice to open the door when there is no power. It's actually easier to open from the inside than from the outside. If it is already unlocked, you pull the lever under the handle to manually open the door. If it's locked, then you need to pop open the cover and use the manual key to unlock the door and then use the same lever under the handle to open the door.
      Whenever you let the car idle, you should keep the car running in "ready" mode to ensure the 12V does not drain causing the door handles and all electronics to stop working. Typically when the engine light turns on during a battery drain, it could be related to the seat or some other functions stop working causing the engine light to turn on. If the light is off, it's because the accessories are working properly and the codes are off. It does feel that the 12V battery was drained - similar to the issue I had in this video.

      @lsft  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@jackibagbaga7638 keep me posted. They could try to charge up the battery and do a load test. If the load test fails, they will replace the 12V battery or if the load test is ok, then they will just clear the codes and return the car back to you. Just make sure you keep the car in ready mode when you do anything. Don't stay in accessory mode. Also, if you drive short distances, you may need to consider a trickle charger to maintain the car battery. If you don't drive enough, over time the 12V battery will lose capacity causing a dead battery.

    Several years ago we had a battery failure on our BMWX3. Our road service technician told us that we should always lock our car in the garage because there are several systems that continue to run and drain the battery if you don’t lock the car. This excessive draining reduces the life of the battery. I am amazed at how many systems the 450 has running and the above advice is even more important for this car. Going to France from Australia for 48 days next month, I assumed the idea was to leave the charging cable connected. I now see that the opposite is true. Surprisingly, Lexus will collect my car at the airport, store it, clean it and return it to me 48 days later at the hotel we are booked into due to a midnight arrival home. Free of charge.
    Having had our 450 for exactly one week, we have done 330km and have enjoyed it. It will be much more enjoyable when Lexus installs our fast charger on Monday. How about some videos on:
    A. The ratio of km using battery to km using petrol and the cost per km saving in cents. Yes, that will be different for each user. I note that you are spread sheet literate so you could have some fun with this. I have created my own spread sheet and have reached a number of 9.26 cents per km based on my current situation. With the addition of more batteries for my solar system in June, I expect the saving to increase and help pay for the batteries,
    B. How to managethe life of fuel in the tank where burning petrol is very slow. I can imagine not using a tank of petrol in 4 months. What is the problem if any? Is there an additive that I can put in the tank to maintain the volotile portion of the fuel?

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před rokem +1

      Hey Paul. I think it's prolong driving short distances over time will drain the battery to 50% capacity causing it to drop further when it got cold. The system may not have charging enough of the 12V battery when it was -21 causing it to not have enough juice to startup. You know the NX startup uses a fair amount of electricity from the 12V, where the headlights are on, the seats need to move forward, the systems are booting up. I think the smart plug would need to be able to handle the current and not cause issues to the EVSE, but that could be an option. As long as the car doesn't think that the charger is still plugged in.

    I have an NX350h Executive and had the battery die shortly after taking ownership. We took possession in November 2022 and had driven a few trips that amounted to about 15-20 kms each trip. As it's a hybrid the gas engine cycles on frequently even around town, once you go over about 35 km/hr typically the ice will start up. So you would expect the 12 volt battery to recharge during every trip. I have 2 dogs so I had bought new back seat cover and door guards (didn't want to experience dog toenails scratching the wood inserts in the doors 😫). I knew that doing the install the doors needed to be open for a while well I figured out how to install everything correctly so I turned off the interior dome lights. Didn't help much as after I was done, which took maybe half an hour the car had drained the 12 battery down and nothing would work. Luckily I hadn't locked and left the car so the doors were open and I could get to hood latch to open it. I knew I had the Safety Connect Service I could summon using the Emergency Assistance Button ([SOS]) via the button located on roof by the interior light switches but as the battery had died, guess what it wouldn't connect!! So keep in mind you may not be able to summon a tow truck or have some fuel delivered etc if your battery dies you better have a charged cell phone handy to call for assistance!
    So I called Lexus to have them boost the car since it was only a few weeks old and didn't want the hassle of possibly having not jumped the battery correctly (please read your manual to learn how to do this correctly as the battery is in trunk and not under the hood! You need to know where your contact points are to jump start battery correctly). Tow truck arrived within minutes to boost me and went on his way. Dealership called next day as they had been alerted by vehicle that there was a dead battery situation. Had the annoying fault warning constantly show up on centre display for a couple of trips then it cleared. Bought a new NOCO GBX45 and extension cables so that you can connect booster while in trunk with battery directly. Keep the booster charged up, says a full charge should last up to 1 year. The battery label looks like the 350h has a 563 CCA (cold cranking amps) which should be fine. My 2009 Murano takes a 640 CCA battery and that's to actually start a V6 engine and my battery lasts 5-6 years typically and I can have the doors open and interior lights on for quite a while too and still start no problem.
    When you consider the time I took was probably about the same time it would take to open up the doors to clean the interior. So the usual open doors remove mats vacuum interior etc. And then your battery is dead! I'm not sure but maybe because I had the key fob in my pocket the car might have turned on daytime running lights or the parking lights I never checked but that would help drain battery too.
    Learned that both 450h+ and 350h don't actually have a physical starter motor like typical ice do. One of the electric motors connected directly to the crankshaft actually spins up the gas engine when called upon to start. Hence why the startup of the engine is quick and quiet and doesn't shake the car when doing so. But the 12 volt battery does all the work in the background even when you're not in car. So all the communication with Lexus app / digital key on your phone, cellphone network for maps, software updates and security tracking system, looking for your key fob constantly while your close by so that it will unlock as you approach it etc etc. All of this drains the 12 volt battery on an ongoing basis. Note you can reduce your cell phones digital key range on the app to nearby so that your car won't try to connect to your phone while it see's it when you're inside your home constantly. This will keep your 12 volt battery from draining as well. I also keep all my key fobs key cards in a faraday pouch as well so their signals don't reach the car and also for security reasons no one can boost key signal from outside and start vehicle and steal it!

    • @lsft
      @lsft  Před rokem

      Thanks for the detail explanation on your situation. The 350h has 563 CCA which is more than what is in the 450h+ There is only 325 CCA rating battery. I have turned off the digital key on my car. The car should auto power off the lights after 20 mins of being on. It shouldn't stay on even if you have the door open. That is to reduce battery drain from the 12V. It's possible that your original battery did not get charged after it arrived to the dealership as that was suppose to be a pre-delivery step. You have to keep in mind that the car goes on the ship for many weeks before it arrives our shores and they would need to charge it before delivering it to the customer. You could boost your car from the hood in the fuse box. You don't need to crawl to the back to do that - Lexus has already created an extension to the hood so that you can boost from the front.

The negative - cable would be connected to a bare metal feature nearby. I've used one of the bolts for the strut assembly as it's nearby. Now with a known good battery connected on the other end of the jumper cables you can boost the car and the back door will open. Please keep in mind that you should familiarize yourself with the jumping / boosting procedure in the owners manual to make sure everything is followed correctly to prevent damage.

      I never drove the RAV4 Prime, but some NX450h+ owners had owned the Prime before and did say that the NX is much quieter. The insulation of the NX is better, but the gas engine when pushed will be noisy as well. However, if you are driving within the Eco range of the hybrid meter, it's very quiet. EV mode it's quiet, but definitely not the quietest Lexus.

    My car 11 yrs hybrid 450h has just start not starting. I’ve had it at the dealers twice and they said there’s no problem(!) they disconnected my dash cam completely and the battery is only 12 mnths old , a Lexus battery and is reading ok. The problem I have is it kicks over to show the initial start up lights but then doesn’t go onto “ ready” or engine doesn’t kick in. It’s intermittent and not predicable either. I have been caught three times in car parks late at night ( RN) with it not starting then after a while it will. So frustrating NRMA said it might be the brake light switch and to really pulp the brake pedal hard next time it happens.

    So just got my brand new Lexus RX450H+ less than 2 weeks ago and driven it about every third day or so. And today, 12V battery is dead. Can’t start car. Tried following steps in manual to charge the 12V battery with jumper cables attached to front designated area (Positive terminal next to fuse box and negative on metal clip).

      The reality is - if I drive any car with such short distances the 12V battery will drain and not charge enough. I've been an owner of a Lexus Hybrid RX for 14 years and I'm fully aware of this behaviour. If the vehicle's 12V battery is dead, you'll get the Check Engine warning alert on the instrument clusters. My advice is to have a portable battery jump starter to get you out of troubles. This is also an early warning that your 12V battery needs replacement. A NEW 12V battery should keep you happy motoring for the next 5 years.
