How to Build a Bookcase by Jon Peters

- I get started building this small bookcase, which is a great woodworking project that follows a classic and pretty basic design. I use Quarter Sawn White Oak for the legs, top and small bead molding at the bottom of the bookcase, and will give that a natural finish. The rest of the cabinet will be painted white. Here’s Part 1 of the series where I build the base of the cabinet.

Jon, love your attention to detail and precision, even on smaller projects like this one! Always a joy to watch.
Jon. Your technique for cutting inside miters is amazing. You Always make detail work look so easy. Thx for sharing.
A master craftsman at work. Simply poetry, thank you Jon.
What a great project. I love all the detail with the molding.
I love watching your videos. Very professional and great projects.
It's been a long time since I've been from Spain. And with examples like this one that I share today I realize that I was not wrong. Thank you so much for your talent and logic in your work
Great start. Can't wait to see the finished product.
always enjoy your video's. You have a knack for teaching and speaking to the camera, your projects are thought out, and you describe your process and what you are looking for when doing something.
Look forward to part 2!
Another piece of art! Thanks Jon.
I used bead molding on a built in recently. Learned it from you and adds a little bit extra to the finished product. Thanks for sharing your experience as always...
Beauty. Thank you for sharing Jon.
This simplifies the detailed work and it looks terrific. Thanks so much.
That is going to be a nice bookcase, I look forward to seeing it finished
Such a talent. Thanks for sharing Jon!
I love your furniture designs. They seem simple but classic. I really like the use of moldings. I've probably built more of your projects than any other woodworker's. I've even branched off with project designs of my own with your distinct influence. Keep them coming. Dan
Great! Jon is back with book shelves!!
That bead molding being extended out past the rails/styles looks great, Jon.
That's a lovely bookshelf. I'd love to build that someday. Can't wait for the follow up vid.
love it works great. just the right size
Looks great so far! Your process is so clear and concise
Beautiful piece, love the details.
Love all these vids. Great explanations. Great skills and techniques. A nice normal human sized shop. Enough tools to get the stuff done. Not the taj mahal of every tool known man...that no one but the elite woodworker could afford. Good stuff.
That bookcase is so nice! I saw it in a few videos of you and it is getting better and better! Well done Jon
Excellent Jon. Thank for the great video!
I learn so much every time I tune in. Thanks Jon, you are "The Man ...of Woodworking".

Beautiful Work!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely gives me ideas about kitchen cabinets as well.
Learn so much from watching. Thanks for sharing your plans. I am going to build the chest and this bookcase. Your do a wonderful job on all of your projects. Thanks again!
This is by far the best woodworking book I have ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . My woodworking teacher endorses it to all of his students. I am impressed how authors managed to write very detailed topics. I`m surprised by the material and didn`t have a tough time following the lessons..
Good clean stuff as usual Jon. Thanks for sharing!
Great work Jon! That's really a beautiful bookcase. Now I've got another "to-do" project on my list. Thanks...................... :)
I look forward to your videos, brother. Good stuff

Giving a Lot of ideas, thanks a lot
Great job explaining everything thank you very much
You are a true craftsman
If I had to chose to keep just 1 Chanel about woodworking then Jon Peters' would be a no brainer. Simply the best I know. Hopefully you will keep rewarding us with more excellence knowing you are leaving a heritage of people with improved skills and know-how behind and in the process which I hope it is in itself rewarding to you too! Thanks a lot once again. And yes I will repeat what countryboyx007 said: you make it look so easy!
Thank you...appreciate that.

Great Job , thanks Teacher 👊😎
Following several ‘woodworkers’ for some time now. Its good to see you didn’t go for these ‘amazing but inpracticable projects. Good to see you being ‘down to earth’ with great craftsmanship. As a son of a carpenter I can appreciate this. Keep up the good work buddy 👍
Thanks Josh
Nice Jon!
Nice clean looking case! Never used a bead bit b4 I like the look of the profile it leaves definitely gonna add one to my collection. Have a good one Jon!

This is a great build.... I live in the Caribbean, island of Barbados.... We build things a little differently , but I like your style and your dictation . I will keep watching since I'm learning a lot.

Perfect!
I've watched many of your videos and I think this is the first time I have commented. It is wonderful to see such good craftsmanship. Very inspiring for a DIY enthusiast like myself. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated :)
Thanks Mike
Great looking bookcase. Nice video. You should have your own show on PBS. Thank you for video's.
Always enjoy your videos. I’d appreciate your advice sometime for essential tools to own for a very limited/small workspace. I’d love to have all your tools! I watch envious for sure. But it would be impossible with my limited space. Anyway, your videos are the best. I really enjoy them and they inspire me to work on something new on the house. Thanks for sharing this design!
Good morning Jon, excellent video and beautiful build. I can hardly wait to get back in the shop and build some furniture... been working on stage props for a while.
Thanks
because of this, I'm subscribing Jon
I love these kinds of videos why oh why didn't I take woodwork at school 👍
fantastic i think you did a blanket chest and it was my absolute favorite. this would be a great companion piece! thanks for the content
Thanks Rocco...these pieces would go together nicely.
Hi John, tomorrow is Friday ;-) no I'm joking. I very very like your design for this Bookcase and it comes to the right time. We move in the next time and we decided to build most of our furniture for the new house by use self. So this Bookcase is for sure one of the builds and I try to stay on this design to build the rest of the furniture in the same way so we have a nice living room.
Hi five from France Tim and Sahra
That’s a great idea... taking your time and having beautiful furniture that you made... sounds good 👌👍
eres un profesional Jon : )
Great project! My version-
Just finished my game cabinet using this same design. I modified it from your blanket chest build :) Made it with solid Cherry top and frame.
Sounds beautiful, cherry is definitely one of my favorite woods.
I absolutely love watching your videos. You have such a calm, confident demeanor. Thank you for sharing your talent and skills and for proving plans for your projects.
Thank you Kathy
If you are one of those people who enjoys building woodworking crafts/projects and some basic carpentry skills this website will interest you in the same way that it did me. >> *TopFineWoodworking. Com*
First of all, THANK YOU for sharing your experience and craftsmanship with the world. Incredible to have teachers available in the comfort of a living room.
Second, I noticed you and a few other cabinet makers who enjoy making custom molding for trim use the beading bit. Curious what size beading bit you used here? I've got a 3/8", though it seems a little big. Thank you again!
I’m just gonna like it before I watch it because it’s going to be educational.
my girlfriends dad told me about *TopFineWoodworking. Com* he was showing me few plans in there for a new deck, they had tons of projects
Yeah!!
Jon, You are the man with the talent! I'm in "awe" that you can actually build furniture but the little youtube channel i've recently started only deals with refinishing. I have a question and would really appreciate your professional opinion. I've used both gel and regular stains but I'd like your input as to which is best and is maybe one better for specific projects?
Thank you!
Great work Jon, Do you ever have bloopers? LOL!
I think I am going to try this with a bunch of scrap in my shop.
2:24, extra fiber in your coffee! 🤣
😂
Another great project. I am curious about the cleats for the shelves. Why did you add the cove detail ?
Oh man, I didn't know I only needed one pocket hole for my 1x2 face frames and freaking split the wood on my project. So glad I know better now. I see that you're only making one pocket hole for the frames.
👍
