  • They say history repeats itself, and for the MLB it has with Shohei Ohtani. The reincarnation of Babe Ruth is doing things only the Great Bambino has done before.
So it’s about time we started truly appreciating Shohei and his two-way play.

Ohtani immediately made me remember the Japanese home run king, Sadahara OH (He hit 868 career dingers, which is still the record in all of professional baseball worldwide). MLB now has its own version of the NBA's Steph Curry. Hope he stays healthy a whole season. Being in the home run derby may not be as exciting as Josh Hamilton or Bryce Harper's wins, but MLBaseball needed more than a COVID shot in the arm in 2021!

One big reason Ohtani initially struggled with pitching in MLB is that balls are slightly bigger than those in NPB and the leather is more dry and slippery, which results in more strain to the elbow.
After his two surgeries, this year Joe Madden says he hasn’t seen Ohtani laugh so much, which is a sign that he doesn’t have to bear the elbow and knee pain like before. I really hope he stays healthy.
For the non-Japanese fans, I’ll give you a link of a video of Ohtani getting interviewed at age 22. (Sorry, it’s all in Japanese, no subtitles.)
This is his “table of goals” (ultimate goal and smaller goals, and yet smaller goals to achieve it) he put together as a high school freshman: czcams.com/video/QLt0TGoQCQc/video.htmlm37s
A bit later in the vid he shows the flexibility of his shoulders, which was one of the smaller goals for him to be able to throw 160km/h (100mph): czcams.com/video/QLt0TGoQCQc/video.htmlm26s
So, while some people call him a unicorn, it’s not like he’s was just born with a gift. He’s fought all the nay-sayers of his 2-way dream in Japan as well. He’s extremely focused and he’s worked very hard since he was young to fulfill his dream, step by step. This guy has no interest in partying, he thinks it’s a waste of time and would rather go to the gym. He’s literally obsessed with baseball.

      @halflanding1900 Před 3 lety +4

@@joerogaine3093 Yes, he’s human and we all know about his NY start.
Admittedly he wasn’t good but it’s not rare he starts off a bit shaky, and I think he would have gotten away with one or two runs in that inning if it weren’t for the terrible series of bad breaks he suffered: like four strikes called a ball including the lead off batter getting a walk instead of a strikeout, Suzuki passing the ball advancing runners (which was another strike ball called a ball - UmpireScorecards listed these calls as 1st and 3rd worst calls in the game), and a hit-by-pitch call which looked quite dubious. See: czcams.com/video/UFkbJGOi81Q/video.html
Anyway, you can’t always get good breaks, but he just got a W against Boston in his latest start, and I think he’ll just get better as long as he stays healthy. Cheers

Batting and pitching take so much mental preparation, it's really hard to do both at the same time. Batters watch videos of pitchers the night before they play them....pitchers have conferences outlining how they will pitch to each batter....it's hard to maintain a really high level of performance at both. Fielders often play with nagging injuries that could really hurt a pitcher's performance. If a fielder is diving for balls, sliding head first, etc...this would subtract from his pitching performance. As I said above, it might be better to use him as a reliever, where he only throws one or two kinds of pitches, he doesn't wear out his arm as much, and he can return to the outfield after each outing.

Man he runs like a deer super fast. Always been an angels fan and I'm so happy for them getting him. Hope he stays healthy baseball can wear on your body and at his pace that's my main concern. He's definitely MVP hope he's has a long career. I saw Sandy Kofax throw a perfect game when I was in little league. The opposing pitcher threw 1 hitter

He's a special player, and it's great that he is putting up such awesome stats. BUT, baseball is a team sport. He can't do it all himself. If he doesn't have other good players around him and good coaching, Babe Ruth will always have one thing Shohei Ohtani doesn't - multiple World Series championship rings. Mike Trout is also great, but he'll never have a ring either because he's on a perennially mediocre team with no apparent desire to get much better.

    • @jwanie366

If they can at least win a playoff game, that should be considered a great accomplishment. Shohei has yet to experience the postseason while Trout has only made it there once, and the Angels got swept that year in the Division Series

IMO the best thing about Shohei Ohtani being compared to Babe Ruth is it serves to educate younger generations and those baseball fans that are unfamiliar with the absolute greatness of Babe Ruth . I hope Ohtani's health improves and he can have a career as long as Ruth's. If Ohtani's arm issues aren't resolved soon, I hope he is moved to 1st base, or possibly the outfield, if less use of his throwing arm is enough to resolve his issues. He clearly has the speed of a great center fielder. If you're not familiar with Ruth, research and read of his childhood, and growing up in a Catholic orphanage. It is a great read. Barry Bonds leads MLB in homers with 762 over a 22 year career (AVG homers/season=34.6). Hank Aaron is 2nd with 755 homers over 23 years (AVG homers/season=32.8). Babe Ruth is 3rd with 714 homers over 22 year career (AVG homers/season=32.4). It MUST be noted that Babe Ruth was primarily a "pitch only" for the vast majority of his first 5 seasons, so if those 5 years are deleted from his batting stats he would of averaged 40+ homers per season, OR had he hit regularly in the daily line-up during those seasons and averaged 40+ per season (42 is a more accurate #), he would be projected to hit b/t 880 and 924 over the 22 years! In the 1918 World Series Babe Ruth won 3 and lost 0, as pitcher with 29 &1/3 scoreless innings, of which one game went a WS record 14 innings (Boston w/Ruth on the bump eventually won 2-1)! With the above having been said, let's not crown Ohtani just yet, but I'd love to see him go off the charts, like Ruth did. In Ruth's "day", he had NO EQUALS. Before any of you: "consider the era of baseball" ("era" as in time, not ERA as a pitching stat) get started, remember this: "everything is relative" per Albert Einstein, so don't start with the "Babe Ruth couldn't touch today's pitching," type crap, save both our time, and just don't. LOL

Even if his run is short it is still incredible, we don't see players like this because of junior development, outside of little league great hitters regardless of arm strength typically get pushed one way or the other and it continues the older they get...it's miraculous he stuck to his strengths and basically best the system

Your video would be incomplete if you didn't mention the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck the northeastern region of Japan in 2011, and the uniqueness of Shohei Ohtani.
Shohei Ohtani, a native of Oshu City, Iwate, was 16 years old when the disaster struck as a freshman at Hanamaki Higashi High School, and his teammates lost their homes to the tsunami.
“I want to give hope to those who are in despair by playing baseball." This is the reason why he is playing two way, rather than being evaluated on his performance by numbers. Now, the United States and the world are in the depths of despair due to the pandemic. This year, he is willing to work harder than anyone else and is playing baseball in order to give everyone hope.
