Honestly, Rudy could start his own authentification company and make bank actually identifying and authenticating cards. At this point, I would trust him over Beckett any day.
the problem with authentication is, that you will never be 100% certain if you have the real deal and you sometimes will label a card suspect, as it varies from all references you have, but it might be genuine from a print run you never seen.
On the other hand, there a businesses acting as authenticates, that complain about how hard their business is - very funny: If you can not do the one thing you claiming, do not enter the market. So... the very best people for the business avoid the business as they know their own limits.
Right? He needs his own rating system. Mint cards would be 10 Rudys.

Here is something to investigate and a Warning to North American Buyers - i hope Rudy sees it:
Beckett grades German cards from the "Renaissance" Set as "1994 Antiquities". Just check Ebay for "Antiquities German". Currently someone sells for example a Beckett graded Mishra's Factory from the German Renaissance Set (Black border and Set Symbol) for 499 USD, which are worth about 3-4 Euros in M/NM condition.
Beckett not knowing about Renaissance as a Set seems unlikely considering their Expertise of Magic The Gathering.
So Beckett claiming german Renaissance Set cards which are not worth much are "1994 Antiquities" is very misleading. The Sellers don't point that out either, they of course abuse the Fact that their Renaissance Card was classified "Antiquities" by Beckett.
Would love to .see Rudy look into this
Rudy you should invest in a digital micromiter used in machining precision parts. Then you can get actual thickness measurements you will always be able to pick out even the best reback cards in the world
I was thinking the same thing. Some nice mitutoyo calipers would be great. Maybe even overkill.
with the money he makes some good calipers would pay for themselves in the cases which are hard to tell.
@@meantforu222 nah, you want a micrometer for measuring thickness, though the calipers would be good for the other dimensions.
@@Dysan72 why would the calipers not work? New to machining and shop work and trying to learn more about methods.
@@meantforu222 Calipers don't have a force control, so with soft materials, or measurement deltas below ~.003, they are not particularly accurate or particularly consistent. Also, a 0-1 digital micrometer can resolve down to .00005~, which means that even variations in the rolls of paper are easily seen.
I started playing magic in 7th Edition and it gave me a group to belong to all through middle and high school. Even played at work now and then. That stopped, though and for years my cards just sat there doing nothing. Recently, my brother in law got back into it and began to teach my nephew the game as well. Thing is, he is all about the value of cards, what they're worth in terms of money he can get later on. I see cards in terms of value within the game. So suddenly having someone that close that I can play a game I loved with, but who only sees it in terms of gambled investment... It's a little soul killing.
Same but with pokemon and yugioh wanted people to play now they are collection but only for money
When you realize that people are spending their money to get back a feeling, or get a feeling they could not reach when they were younger and had less capital to spend on experiences...
THAT is when you will learn that some are creative who LIVE every day, and some are survivalists and are already dead.
@@B.V.Luminous Dude, I just want to play a game I remember enjoying. There's no need to come in and hork up all that "I'm 12 and this is deep" ish.
@@JackSilver1410 yup, you are a creative.
The card seller is a dead soulless being.
@@B.V.Luminous I see it a bit differently, if he was "just after the value" he wouldnt play the game and teach it to your nephew. He shares the fun of playing that that you have. if they had no game value to him he wouldnt play. Yeah your old cards have sentimental value and thats why they have so much more value to you, but he has no sentimental connection to it. Just imagine if you had known like you had a card back then you didnt need for example because it wasnt in your colors or stuff and you knew you could get money for it wouldnt you have done it? I started playing last year and our group drafts a lot, great fun, but I sell almost all cards that are worth something almost immediatly, because I dont need them, they would gather dust in my place and maybe even get damaged. So I sell them, someone who needs them can buy them and treassure or play them, so the cards have a use again and I can use the money to play another event with my group (for example someone recently bought my cultivator collos, she needed it for her commander deck, so she was happy she found the card and I had a bit more money which I then spent on a booster box that I opend with my group (we enjoy opening boosters together). And the cards I dont need and are not worth, I give them to the two ppl in our group that love collecting and they are happy about them. For me thats the soul of the game, giving the cards a kinda purpose beyond laying in my binders. I also have a few cards I treassure that I like or have some story behind them. Like for example that sorin my playgroup gifted me. I would never sell him, but I understand everyone who would. Enjoy the time playing with your brother in law and your newphew :)

Now the question is, how many rebacked cards did Beckett grade as authentic and give an actual numerical grade to? If it wasn't for the bad trim job they would've given that card a number grade, no?
Problem is the company recognized the card as authentic beta edition. Even altered, the paper says it's genuine, which isn't. I hope they hadn't sold many cards on this situation. Otherwise, they might be sued for collectioners
@YourMovieRocksDOTorg that's absolutely idiotic. Becketts whole business model is identifying authenticity and quality.

Honestly, this type of stuff should be interesting to anyone wanting to know how to spot counterfeiting. While counterfeit money is an entirely different beast than MtG cards, there's some similarities that can be spotted if you've seen the ways people counterfeit playing cards. The corner not being cut right or the thickness of the card are some examples that could apply to dollar bills. Getting 20s, 50s, and 100s from the bank shouldn't concern you. But if I get a $100 bill as part of a large exchange you bet your balls I'm handing it back if I don't feel like the weight, size, or font doesn't feel right.

Just for fun, when breaking out the tools you ought to throw in a small sledge and torch. :D
Once again I can tell the difference by the printing and rosette pattern of the printing. It makes sense because you would need an expensive press and a lot of money and stock to get the same printing method as the real cards. The kind of devices a counterfeiter would use to print are not likely to create any screening pattern.
Awe, I was hoping for a light test 🔆

Aren't you supposed to be able to put in the ID# to get the items history? I tried on the beckett website and it has no listing for the given ID#.

pretty cool uncle rudy. always amazed at the inventory and skills that make a video like this possible.
Rudy do you collect the CE edition black lotus's or is that somthing you avoid? What do you think of the future value of the cards?
Buy a set of digital vernier calipers. You can measure card thicknesses and compare.
A micrometer is better, I used them for calibrations.
but how will he know the digital calipers are authentic??
I agree with the other comments, you could weigh the card and compare it to the actual beta. Also, you could get your hands on a digital, ratcheting micrometer to get an accurate and consistent thickness measurement. (I would definitely use a ratcheting micrometer instead of a caliper since the ratchet aspect will force you to use the same amount of pressure with each measurement).
good job reading other comments and then parroting them
@@samueld5418 i posted this comment two years ago when the video dropped. I don’t see a single other comment mentioning the repeatability advantage of a ratcheting micrometer. I was by no means parroting the other comments. Just adding my 2 cents. Have a great day Samuel.

Great video! Would have been cool to see a light test to see the finish pattern of the glue.
Hey Rudy, could you follow up on all of this? I think it would be interesting and informative to the community to see what the next steps would be to correct this situation. Giving the eBay seller the benefit of the doubt, he sold what a professional told him was authentic. But clearly that authenticator appears to be wrong. However, they can't be sued for the $2k that this eBay seller might have to be out in order to compensate the buyer per eBay's own seller guidelines, right? Would love to know how this ends up. ALSO, not to sound conspiratorial, but what are the chances that people from Beckett are working with eBay sellers? Has this ever been looked into?
You could probably weigh the cards if it's that thick.

This is that big thing in the works he's been talking about. WOW! Thank You Rudy. Sincerely
Would a micrometer help in showimg a differemce, or couls it cause some markings?
Rudy, if i can make couple suggestions from the perspective of a printing press operator. Get a digital caliper "20$". You can measure the thickness "in mm, or decimal inches, or pts" of legit cards and use it as another point of reference for verification. We use them constantly in the print industry to measure paper thickness to set the gap between plate and blanket "squeeze". Also, get a printers magnifying glass "Printing Loupe" "10$" that way you can actually see the tonal pattern, and individual dots. You will easily have verifiable evidence with these tools. It might be interesting if you were to get a USB magnifying camera and really show the audience the blatant frauds from the legit prints.

You mean it doesn't say Rudy on his birth certificate?!
Use a micrometer to show thickness. You can see the heat marks from the iron used to seal the two together

Thats a great idea
Either weighing it on a hyper sensitive scale (try a hemp shop for one of those) … OR … there are actually quality measuring tools in DIY stores, be it that they are metal and might thus be not such great tools to get close to fragile material, but using a paper wrap to protect the card and measure it that way would work.
Also curious about the light test, he mentioned it but never did it. I would like to have seen it.
Just put it between two cheap cards and measure the thickness with a caliper.

I have a mis cut Nicole bolas Planeswalker that is so badly cut it doesn't fit into a perfect fit sleeve properly. It is a Foil and I once got it priced at between 500 and 2,000 dollars. I didn't purchase it separately it came in an official product and I don't remember which one but I'm also wondering if it is really anything close to that price. I could see a very slight difference in the thickness and I have heard of people who did a reback by treating it with a type of cleaning solvent that dries almost immediately and is used for dealing with hydrolic fluids to remove all the unwanted pigments and then put on their own new ones. They got so good at it you could give them a random Foil and they would give you another card of your choice but it would be a Foil now. For example he made some Foil black lotus cards and was able to pass them and other cards to grading services and they couldn't tell the difference. Hey Rudy, it would be interesting to test them with a good precision calipers. Also would the weight be different on a rebacked card ?
The weight can be different on a rebacked card.
This one is probably heavier if it feels thicker.
You need a very precise scale to weigh single cards.
@@TavisKingsChannel Thanks for your reply, yeah I wasn't thinking about your standard kitchen scale but I was wondering if ther was a way to substantiate the "feeling" of being thicker. Maybe sliding it in a stack or cards would have been enough to show it was thicker idk.

Rudy calipers are great for getting an actual number to thickness if you wanted to show the variations of card thickness for fakes. Your doing amazing work thank you
