    Thank you. I am in need of an inexpensive privacy hedge. The lots in my suburb are only 50 feet wide. My back door is at ground level, but both next door neighbors have a raised back door with a raised exterior deck. I do have a 6 foot privacy fence around my yard, but both neighbors have a clear view of my entire back garden from their deck. One of the neighbors is hostile. She will sit on her deck and stare at me in silence. Sometimes she will cuss at me. Sometimes she pickets the fence and peers at me from between the wooden slats. She throws bottled water and trash into my garden when she thinks I can't see her. I try not to provoke her for fear she might take it into her head to throw poisoned food that will kill my dogs. One cannot reason with a mental case.
    I've seen a lot of very happy Rose of Sharon growing in my town. So for a privacy hedge I'm looking at the White Pillar variety (Zones 5-9, sun, 16' tall x 3' wide at maturity). A 3 foot diameter is dandy for a hedge but I will need at least a dozen that dimension to block her view. Even at 15 per nursery plant that quantity is more than fixed income can afford. Propagation and patience seems the best way to go. I have patience and you have given me the courage to try the propagation. I think if I buy only one nursery plant, I can take a good many cuttings. I read that White Pillar can put on a few feet of height every year. Any advice on spacing from the fence and spacing between the plants?

    Hey! Not sure if you already know this but Rose of Sharon easily seed on there own. If you look at the bottom of your shrub or anywhere in its vicinity, you may see PLENTY of little seedlings all around. Some may consider them invasive but I just pull or weed wack the seedlings from my beautiful hibiscus, but if I want to share a plant I just dig one up from right below the shrub and stick it in a small pot and pass it on. This is also how I was able to get a couple of lavender plants from my grandmothers garden. She just lets hers grow wild as she is near a wooded area.

    • @BroadwayGardener
      @BroadwayGardener  Před 2 lety +6

      Oh yes! They like to seed themselves all over if I don't cut them back fast enough lol. Since I had far too much time on my hands, I was just curious to see if they were easily water propagated as well. Considering I do most all of my plant propagation with that method

      Now they are making them sterile. I am so sad about that. The seeds don’t germinate & i have not been successful with rooting stems in water either. These are from Proven Winners & they act like sterile is a good thing. I want mine to reproduce.

      I do water propagation and by far the easiest. I do Coleus. Never have to buy them every year. I live in North Central Arkansas. I do this when season is over. I have 22 jars already with alot of roots. I am trying the rose of Sharon 1st time roots are 1 to 2 inches long. So I'd like to know if I could put them in soil now? Be for I go, I have windows on south side (laundry rm) another in my Ceder rm, I have plenty of light in both rooms. So do you think I can plant them in soil now? That's on the Coleus, & Rose of Sharon. I don't have Direct sun on any of them. I Love your page, hope you can help. Thks again.

    I have Rose of Sharon. I find propagation is unnecessary with Rose of Sharon. I have dozens upon dozens of baby Rose of Sharon growing all around the garden because the Seeds just go everywhere. I pulled these out and they have tons of roots on them.
    I took three rooted stems
    And braided them together. I have them held together by a rubber band gently.
    This is how I saw them at the store. I said to myself, I can do that too for free.

    Just a suggestion if you use that routine ball got to put a little bit of sphagnum peat moss and wedding it works better because the plants still connected to the mother plant until the roots develop you don't lose as many cuttings I tried it over and over again using soil doesn't work for me sand and compost Vicks also works well but you must cover the entire tray with a clear plastic bag so that it could keep humidity in the area of the plants.

    Thanks so much for this update!
    I started a bunch of ROS from some seeds I recieved at a seed swap. It took years to see success which is generally my most successful gardening strategy. (I get excited. Start a bunch of seeds. A lot don't make it so I throw the old soil into the garden come July when I'm over watering soil trays vs seed trays. 😆 Then like a miracle, the next spring, I have these "volunteers" spring up)
    That was the story of my ROS. On year 4, I have these gorgeous shrubs that I'm thinking I want more of. But, I'd like to try a more successful way.
    Much like you, I am a NOTORIOUS "lazy" gardener. It isn't that I'm neglectful per say, but i frequently require a time of rest from full on garden obsession. During this times, I forget to pamper things.
    So this is right up my alley. A method that will forgive me for living a life not consumed by all things gardening. 😆 Set & (sort of) forget it!
    Thanks for the video.
    Can't wait till fall. My window sills will be littered with jars!

    Wonderfully helpful set of videos & I so enjoy your style & down2earth inclusions of the idiosyncratic self-tendencies you've noticed have hindered progress, eg forgetting to H2o cuttings-in-soil; losing plant-watering drive mid-winter; & (4-me) especially forgetting which plant is which in process of doing a project🤪➡great modeling re: set it up for success by doing processes that match your quirks. I & very much appreciate/love that you took the extra time to include what you noticed during editing, the info re: woody part & showing us how well the transplant is doing--what a lot of gifts❣

I have had to resolve in my head...Rose of Sharon vs. Rose of Shannon...in my 80 years on earth I had always thought 'Shannon' was "the rule", but thanks to my source ( Wikipedia ..surely official 🤣), check this out...Introduced in Australia by Treloar Roses in 1966 as 'Shannon'. Introduced in Ireland by Samuel McGredy and Son, Nurserymen (Ireland) in 1966 as 'Shannon'. Introduced in New Zealand by Avenue Roses/Avenue Nurseries (Levin) Ltd. in 1966 as 'Shannon'. Just goes to show you (me actually ), ya never 2 old 2 learn 😎

    Your plant in the background of this video looks like it may need some water, getting droopy. Thank you for the update, I will try and do this with my plant also. I didn't have it in the right place, it likes full sun, and so for 3 years it did almost nothing and stayed the same as when I had received it in the mail. All of a sudden, this year in full sun inside the house it has grown 2 feet taller and been putting out a ton of flowers. I was worried after that if it wouldn't grow in three years that it was a delicate plant that wouldn't propagate in water.

      I misread that part in title, too🤪, but➡it's 'directly into the Soil.'..so then can see how to use soil + those hormones to stimulate root growth. I was looking for/can't find a video for how to plant ones water-rooted cuttings directly into the ground & thought this would be it➡then realized my mistake. If you know of any or found info, pls let me know🤗. If I find one, I'll let you know. Hey from Florida! What kind of soil do you have outside? I have clay and had two super healthy rose of sharon that I bought, and within a few months of our ridiculous amount of rain they just got root rot and died. I was pretty devastated. However, fast forward one year later my mother-in-law is growing the blue chiffon, which is what I wanted so I took some cuttings. I actually made 16 cuttings! I really want this to work. I don’t think there’s anywhere in my yard that doesn’t have clay after a couple of inches so as I don’t really want to put it in a pot long-term, I’m wondering if I can make some kind of a raised bed thing and keep it in good soil until it’s well-established. But I was curious to know what kind of soil you grew them in. I know they like well drained soil.

    • @BroadwayGardener
      @BroadwayGardener  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hey there! My soil is super hard clay with TONS of rocks. Not the best lol, but we're working on it. Maybe you can make them a little raised bed or add soil/compost to plant them higher up and they naturally get accustom to the clay, while the compost works to start a better nutritious mix. Just a thought 🤷🏾‍♀️
      You can also save some seeds when they make seed pods in fall just incase of an emergency
