  • Alright, so I'm not perfect either! I made a big mistake while propagating these little rooted cuttings and hopefully you guys can learn something from this. My first attempt at propagating softwood cuttings of dogwood trees. Also propagating softwood cuttings of rose of sharon, weigela, climbing hydrangea, and spirea. Enjoy!

    I’d love to see a video of you breaking down when the best time to do various cuttings, for success, which species are better to grow from seed, which ones are better to air layer, graft, hardwood, soft wood or semi hardwood, when/which to cover, which and when to use a heat mat etc.

      Oh, I hope you do! I moved those "sun-cooked" blueberry cuttings - the half which looked as if they just MIGHT make it - into two long planter boxes - we'll see if any of them survive or not. Right now they are in fir-bark mulch. I am strongly considering taking one of those long planter-boxes, mixing the aged fir bark mulch half-and-half with Miracle-Gro potting soil (finally on sale at the end of the season), and attempting to re-root. There isn't enough root growth on many of them for them to be damaged by rescraping the stalks and redipping in rooting hormone. Or maybe I'll just take new cuttings. Or both. We haven't had a frost here yet.

    Thanks. And it’s good that you add the links below as well, not all devices show the links in the video, so for the people that don’t see and can’t acess them in the video, the links added to the description help:)
    PS:
    I’ve also found that the “right time of year” isn’t such a firm rule. I had 100% success on dozens of Euonymus Manhattan I set at the “wrong time of year”. They were my first propagation attempt, I tested several different ways; with and without scuffing them, with and without rooting hormone, etc., and took notes on it all...and they all took, even though I was assured they’d all fail. It’s always worth a go to try anything anytime, from a leaf, soft, semi or hardwood. Whatever. Not much to lose by trying, is there? Like the silly sterility thing, rules are made to be broken;)
    It was your vids that got me to just ignore all the drama of little details and just stick ‘em in some dirt! You said not to fuss over daily watering and all that, I used produce bags to keep moisture in, kept them damp and drained, in semi-shade and hardly had to water them over a few months. I pretty much ignored them for the most part, and it worked great! Now I have shrubs I could never otherwise never afford to cover a huge fence line, and I’m always scoping for cuttings of all kinds of things everywhere I go.
    Thanks, Mike! Your advice is priceless!

    Hey Mike, great video! My husband & I no longer look at plants like "oh that is a pretty shrub", we look at them like "how many cuttings can I get off of that shrub?" We scalp everything around here in early Summer an have hundreds of cutings in various stages - too fun :) My question is about maple trees. I need about 500 of them for our property. What is the best way to propagate maples of various types I can snag from my friends? We also need white oak. Shrubs I get - trees not so much unless it is a pine tree :)
    Any help would be appreciated!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 7 lety

      That's funny, I'm the same way! My wife and I go to a nursery and buy a new plant and she thinks we're buying a new accent to the home. I think we're buying a cuttings factory! Propagating trees is a little more difficult depending on the tree. Willow, of course, is super easy but maples are a little tougher. I've never been able to root maples from cuttings but can get the seeds to germinate really easily so if you don't care if you have an exact clone of the parent then I'd suggest collecting seeds and sprouting them. If you need clones then the best way is air layering. I air layered a bloodgood maple last year and it took just fine and is growing in my hoop house now. I have heard of people propagating cuttings of maple but I think mist would be your best bet. I wanted a bunch of big leaf maples planted around my place and so last winter I just pulled up a bunch of seedlings under a full grown tree that sprouted on their own and now they're growing fine in 1 gallon pots. I don't have any experience with white oak but as you know, every plant is different in terms of propagation. Overall, I think your best bet with trees will be intermittent mist.

    • @kpolkoski7399
      @kpolkoski7399 Před 7 lety

      Thanks Mike! I was thinking the mist thing too. We may someday do that, but honestly for 90% of what we want we don't need it. Seeds would be fine but they do take a LONG time, I waited on a bunch of Red Pines forever so haven't messed with tree seeds since, but maybe maple won't take so long. My only other good option is buying tree plugs off of the internet. Since we want to start with 50-100 it wouldn't kill us financially. Plugs do very well, I got 500 red pine from Itasca and maybe lost 5. Not free like propagation, but for speed it might be the way to go.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 7 lety

      I'm all for buying small starts in bulk and have done it myself in the past. If you need a lot of plants quick, then that's a great way to go!

You just need good lighting and to have them indoors in a warm place. Here's the video I have about coleus: czcams.com/video/ZChLkdhj2ko/video.html

    Have you thought of selling your cuttings for us newbies? With USPS able to send packages within 1-3 days cross country, if you packaged the cuttings in a Ziploc bag and maybe some sort of ice pack i think they'd be able to survive. Little profit for you, and some fun experiments of different plants for us.

      Yes, I have thought of selling cuttings and actually sold some in the past but the problem for me is time. With a family and full time work, it's all I can do just to get these videos up. The cuttings would only sell for pennies and really not be worth the time. That's why I started making the videos, so I could teach everyone what I do and you guys could replicate it. That being said, if someone had to have a specific plant that they saw me propagate and couldn't find it anywhere else, I do my best to help out and get it to them.

    I was given (free) at an Arbor Day event some Dogwoods. They were just basically twigs but have grown to a nice Bush. When can I expect them to flower? They are now two years old and have not flowered at all. I know that 2020 has been tough on them with the Japanese Beatle. I fixed that with Beatle Traps. Great Stuff! No spray, Safe, it just keeps killing them! Highly recommend the "bag traps".

      I don't know all the particular punishments or fines involved but I do know that propagating patented plants with the intent of making money is illegal unless you have an agreement with the patent holder and that will usually involve them getting a share of the sales. If you have a patented plant at home and want to copy it so you can have one on each side of your house, I don't think the patent police will be banging down your door.

    Hi Mike,
    I just wanted to say I enjoy your videos! I live just outside of the Tacoma area. My husband built me a greenhouse a couple years ago, I mostly did all seeds or would just bring in my geraniums in the fall to protect them from the frost. Problem is its a small greenhouse and the geraniums are getting big, taking up space. #1.) Do you have a video on how to make your hoop house? Also I don’t sterilize tools/pots either, unless i see a petunia with white flies, then I will clean them to go to the next hanging basket. (Example) I look at it like bringing home a baby if you shelter your infant it will not form the resistance it needs to fight off colds / flue whatever comes. But also if you know your kids sick your not going to take a drink off the same cup he was drinking from. Just some common sense. So we are building a resistance for our plants likewise, your kid gets sick you rest them, give the flu meds, good nutrition and you keep and eye on them. Same with pets or plants. #2.) Did some cuttings from a Purple Magnolia tree yesterday , Not sure if I did it right but they are in my bedroom window, I have black blinds pulled down with very little light that comes through. #3) do I need a heating mat for this kind of tree? I heard somewhere they should be kept in a shady area, so I was wondering if this was sufficient? I was afraid to put them out in the greenhouse as I lost 2 trays of plant due to it getting above120 on a 90 degree day in the Greenhouse. Was out of town helping my son move, which really sucked because they where plants intended for his new place. So will just start over. I totally relate to that euphoric attitude you get over your plants!!! Looove it!!!! thank you for sharing your knowledge.

The Magnolia cuttings should probably have some bottom heat for the first few weeks if taken now as hardwood cuttings. I like putting trees like dogwood and magnolia in shadier locations because it makes them grow more open and airy instead of compact. I like the look it adds with some rhododendrons growing underneath.
