  • Taking the throne at the age of 16. A highly energetic but arrogant emperor, Justinian's reign started with great success but eventually he blundered into one disaster after another. His aspiration to be a second Justinian greatly out stripped the resources of the empire he ruled. The consequences of his strive for glory resulted in the overthrow of the Heraclian dynasty.

That was a rough period of time, when the Eastern Roman Empire was drastically reduced in size by military defeats and movements of different peoples. The map shown at 4:15 on the time tracker is quite sobering. European holdings often reduced to enclaves and islands, while pretty much leaving central and western Anatolia the sole bastion/reservoir of power for Constantinople.

Hey, have you thought doing a video on the links between ancient Romans and medieval (Byzantines). Many still consider them a just a rump state completely greek. While it was multi ethnic.

I'll correct you: the ERE was multiethnic in its early period 395-641. But when Egypt and the Levant fell to the Arabs, only Asia Minor and Greece remained, whose populations were of greek descent. The only significant minority were the Armenians.

A fair point, I put Abd al Malik's name their since i am talking about him but it is the wrong painting, I should have used something else back in 2019.

Justinian 2nd could have greatest comeback in history had he not focus on Antioch and tried to restore libya and building walls and new thematic system there also convert more bebers like what they did in the slavs in 860s ad he could have restore Egypt and cutting the arabs from north Africa meaning the arabs would only focus on levant and persia with the abaside revolt Byzantine could have trun the table in Levant in time
