  • Writing can be a tough process, but it's even more difficult when you have the wrong tools for the job. Today I'm talking about Google Docs (part of Google drive) and how it changed writing for me. I used to use Word and I've tried using Scrivener, but neither compare to writing in Google docs.
    And beyond writing, Google Docs is a writer's best friend when it comes to the critique process. I ran ALL of Aletheia's beta reading through Google docs. It's great for critique partners, alpha readers, beta readers, and even just general collabing. At the end of the video I also cover some tools that would work perfectly for a writer with a larger Patreon, especially someone who does writing springs.
    What writing software or writing app do you currently use? Do you have any favorite writing apps you'd like me to cover in the future? If I get enough requests I may cover Scrivener, but the user interface hurts me lol

    I am loving the easy access across devices. I can (and have), stood up from my computer and walked to the bathroom with my phone and continued writing until I make it back to the computer. It really is that seamless and updated that fast.

      That's awesome!! I'm happy you found it. It took me a while to get used to it at first but now I don't know how I ever lived without it. I do video editing always on the desktop so tend to end up sitting there while Josh is at work and then just writing there but when Josh is using it I write on my laptop so it would be a nightmare to get the files around otherwise. I think we're going to see more and more applications transfer to in browser now that internet is so widespread and browser based technology can cover such a variety of apps. I'm really excited for it.

    I started using Google docs for elementary school (currently in High school) and have been using it for school and personal projects ever since and can't even imagine using a different word processor (my mom hates it lol). Anyway using the sharing feature me and my friends have collaborated together on tons of projects together.
    Also, this video is really helpful, I have been using google docs/drive for like a solid like 6 years and I still found out some good info on tools I have never used before.
    On a sort of unrelated note, one of my old friend's mom helped developed google docs before Google acquired the company.

    Amazing video! I had no idea Google Docs could do all of this. I was thinking of switching over from Word, but I will wait until I start my next book in a few months so I can really fool around with all the features with a fresh draft.

      I think that's a really good idea. It's defenitely easier to start from scratch which is what I did with Red River. I've been writing in Google Docs for years (even in my day job), but I still learned something new from your video! I didn't think to look into the add-ons for some reason and I didn't know about the "my tasks" and "keep" options! The only downside is if you write in a language other than English, the spell check is so wacky!

    • @CloudKitten
      @CloudKitten  Před 5 lety +1

      Ooh I didn't think about spellcheck in other languages. I guess given how wacky Google translate can be I'm not super surprised. There may be a better spellcheck for other languages in the add-ons actually. I've never looked though. I'm so happy I was able to still help even though you've already switched! 😀

So it’s not been as much of an issue, so thanks for asking. I also think I felt uncomfortable with the version control on docs - another reason I switched back to word. I’ve got a ton of versions. This! This is how I finished my first draft and I'm using it now for editing. I am making self edit note as comments. The outline feature is brilliant. The fact that it's in the cloud and you can have a doc available offline helps a lot especially when I want to block distractions(the entire internet lol).

The first laptop I ever got didn’t even use a normal Word program! It was Word but no matter what it saved in a format that newer Word just couldn’t understand so all my writings would be semi corrupted so Google Docs was a blessing! • @CloudKitten

      This video isn't really meant to be about features word doesn't have, rather features Google docs does have because paired with the cloud based features. Basically there are a lot of people who haven't tried it because they really want cloud features, but assume it falls flat in all other categories. So this is to show everything it has, and for me personally, the cloud features on top of the rest is what makes Google docs the best option. That's my own opinion, and every writer is of course looking for something a little different.

    It's so cool to see someone doing a video about Google Docs. (I mean, Scrivener's cool and all, but it's great seeing some love for the thing I use)
    For me personally, the best aspects are being able to so easily access docs from any device so if my laptop is having trouble I can switch to the living room PC as well as being able to access manuscripts and notes from my phone at any time, and the automatic saving. I'm so bad at remembering to save things and it's nice that I never have to worry about that with Google Docs.

      Have you used Scrivener before? It gets so much love and defenitely has it's own strengths but I struggle so much with it. It's primarily the design and the billions of buttons and the coloring that get me

    • @CloudKitten
      @CloudKitten  Před 5 lety

      I honestly don't recommend you do your formatting yourself. If you can afford it you should hire someone, especially with ebooks where as you said there are multiple apps involved and some corrections actually need to be made to the code of the files and it can get complicated. If you're interested in hiring a professional formatter we do actually offer that as a service you can send an email to authors@CloudKittenPublishing.com to get a quote and samples.
      But yeah Google doc allows you to export to epub but that doesnt handle any of the complicated formating and I wouldn't recommend it.

    • @CloudKitten

      I've seen them done occasionally, they're called Choose Your Own Adventure books I think. In print it's hard because they often end up at 1000+pages which isn't cost effective. I think they work better as ebooks where your formatter (or you if you know how) can add links that jump the reader straight to the text that results from the option they chose. It's risky, but can definitely be done

    I live and eat Google.
    Not because I love it because its google,
    There's a lot I don't like on the privacy side,,,
    But the pluses outweigh most of the other issues I have with them.
    That said: I use google calendar, Photos, and Google Doc (G-Docs)
    For all of the reasons you mentioned.
    The flexibility to use anywhere, on any machine I can log into my account too. On any device, from my laptop to my phone to my tower and a real keyboard and a big monitor.
    The sharing is something I use with my daughter and several other people I haven't gotten into sharing on a big scale like Megan mentioned.
    The other main thing we all need is instant off-site back up. Which is essential to anyone who creates anything.
    With G-docs that one less thing, I have to worry about.
    Recently they started including Grammarly into Docs natively. Which is a big help to me.
    Another reason to use it.
    I've written probably 50 short stories from 1-2 pages up to 10+ page, per story, they're all in there. along with every project that I started and never did anything with.
    Everything gets saved.
    Oh and the two books I've written. along with the two I'm working on now. They're all there.

    I use markdown and git in VS code. I dislike gui tools for formatting and stuff, I just want to write. A pound before some text and it's a header. Done. Image needed? ![title](url) will do the trick. Replace it? Replace the file at the url. Format it? HTML is supported.
    I don't get the benefit of saving to the cloud before a bluescreen from my setup, but I don't get bluescreens, since I use Linux anyways (more stable, better filesystem yadda yadda). Occasional crashes of the desktop may happen, but VS code saved the sentence I was typing to my storage. Next time I access I can push it to git again and it's backed up. Easy as that.
    I used to use LaTeX, but fuck those dependencies. I don't know what they want but it often would just not build. Syntax is outdated too.
    Anyways this is no recommendation for the same setup as I have, but this is what works for me. helps if you're a programmer/Linux user. I find it saves me more pain than it causes, but your mileage will vary.

    • @CloudKitten
      @CloudKitten  Před 3 lety +1

      Well Campfire pro is a completely different type of application and you can't really write in it, so I definitely recommend you keep Google docs around, but Campfire could be a helpful secondar tool. Basically Campfire Pro is for keeping track of character information, outlining, timelines, and worldbuilding. So if you're writing a series, or something complex like fantasy or scifi it's a life saver to have that info documented in an easy to reference way. So I use Google docs for writing and then Campfire Pro for outlining and timelines and World Anvil for worldbuilding tracking, but for most people's use cases you can make do with either Campfire Pro or World Anvil rather than both. Which works best just depends on the individual user. I did tech demos of both World Anvil and Campfire Pro which you can check out to learn more on those.
