The Modern Misfiring of Chekhov's Gun | Trope Notes
Chekhov has a gun, but audiences have the internet, want to guess which is more powerful? Chekhov's Gun as a concept, is solid, but like many things in modern day writing, it suffers greatly at the hands of the internet because audiences have access to a little bit of everything all of the time, and thus, are very aware of Chekhov's Gun. And this simple awareness causes the concept to fail, resulting in stories that are predictable at best and scorned at worst. So I'm going to take a swing at exploring this modern dilemma.

Kishotenketsu is very interesting. At its core, it's not super different from Western story structure. You still have a character whom you develop at the beginning by showing their weaknesses, fears, insecurities, and underlying wants. Something then rocks that character out of their regular life. Then, at the height of the character's unknowingly false confidence, they are sent to their lowest lowpoint and worse off than ever before. But then they return heroically to truly change their old life to a new one for good. What's different about Kishotenketsu is that it seems to put stronger emphasis on early and mid story character development. Furthermore, the inciting incident (I call it "agent of change") and the midpoint are not as clearly flagged. They're much softer. In Kishotenketsu, the inciting incident is more likely to be a circumstance of the world the hero lives in rather than a physical person, body, or object acting upon them specifically. The midpoint in Kishotenketsu is less so a deceptive climax and more like a crucial moment when the hero is most entrenched into their crazy new circumstances (and then the twist happens that leads to the big fallout). Overall, it's more focused on character and development than on plotting and karma.

There is no subtlety whatsoever when you try to juxtapose Abby and Ellie in such obvious ways, such as to ruin any element of surprise. Every thing about Abby’s story has a convenient counterpart to Ellie’s. (Just one dumb example showing lack of nuance, both Joel and Jerry collect coins - FF tags and quarters, respectively) Otherwise, I quite liked it. I would rather have Ellie/Joel and Abby have completely different personalities and unique character motivations / beliefs. Feels like at the first story meeting Neil just said “juxtapose”, and left the room.

At some point in his life Joseph Campbell swallowed a Thesaurus and then spent the rest of his life throwing it up. It would be nice if someone would translate Campbell’s book on Carl Jung into normal English. I think that Sigmund Freud’s books are more popular than Jung because Freud’s books are easier for normal people to read. Had Freud hired Campbell his works would have been much less popular. I sometimes think that professor types hide their ignorance behind an obnoxious vocabulary. It’s ironic that Campbell was a friend of John Steinbeck who has one of the most readable styles, simple and to the point.

I might just be old but yellow fear was not what cause cyberpunk to be that way. It was actually happen. Sony was shitting on IBM and intel. America for the average citizen was a less technology advanced life in comparison to what the Japanese had. It wasn't a fear but a reality that was slowly coming true. If it was not for IBMs war with apple and the development of Microsoft. Japan would have eclipsed Europe and America technology wise. Food and drugs are the worse things to actually be effected in cyberpunk but its not as cool and sexy as big tech bad guys.

Boar skin is definitely bigger than human skin. They're absolutely massive! Colour is also something strongly influenced by not just basic biological/environmental factors (blood, colour of plants) but also but associations and how these things are interpreted and may not be the same in all places. Think white = pure vs. white = death. (For one of my cultures the colours of death are yellow and white; white for the deadly snow of winter, yellow for the falling ("dying") leaves of their staple food tree. Another more closely ties death and life, considering blue to green the colour of both as they commonly bury people in water.) One thing that would work well IMO is casually sprinkling in these associations into the narrative somewhat explicitly (ie: "<Character> was wearing the gold and white of mourning") at first. Over time the readers should probably pick up on it like they do on colour coding of characters.

Despite growing up with anime and manga, which I find immensely entertaining, I've always struggled with their seemingly loose/awkward narrative structure (and their characterization. Westerns are depicted so weirdly in animes). It can feel unfamiliar compared to the more structured storytelling we see in the 'Greek theater' model. However, I recognize this is just my own perception of their inferiority, and anime and manga are not inherently inferior. They simply offer a different approach to storytelling.

Even Tolkien struggled with building a world, not to mention how long he took to make a map that worked. You don't have to build a world to make a good story, but you have to adhere to the world you allude to in a story, so your original story doesn't fall apart. If you plan several stories from this world or are making a game or several books, you should of course build a good foundation. What you can do, which perhaps is a bit easier, is to reveal bit by bit of the world as needed, and only have the structure or shadow of the world planned out. That way you have time and space to adjust a bit.

We need a video explaining how did Voltron fucked up so badly at this trope. Maybe is because they forget about the whole connection and bonding this characters had? maybe is because at the end (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) it feels that they reunited only because of the dead of one member, and not because they actually feel like a family they would choose, maybe is because almost no one missed the character that leaves (yes, i mean keith), and even ignore the one that is still there (yes, i mean lance). Megan, you should check this out, or we could ask Red to do it idk, but it would be so cool! Anyway thanks for this video! i love it!
