Spain is one of the few countries that does not depend on Russia for its gas supply. Spain not only has a very diversified network of suppliers: it also has two gas pipelines connecting it to Algeria. All this gas could be resold to Europe to replace a proportion of Russian imports.
However, relations between Spain and Algeria are at their worst in decades. A series of questionable diplomatic moves have caused Madrid to sacrifice the opportunity of becoming a European natural gas hub.
But what exactly happened and what does Morocco have to do with all this? In this video we tell you.

The missing part in this otherwise insightful report is : France's historical blockade to all connection with Spain. They always wanted Spain subjugated and isolated from Europe, since the spaniards humiliated them many times in the past, there is a grudge that no one talks about, but it's at the center of France's policy towards Spain. They opposed the EU membership for Spain for almost 11 years after Franco died. The french farmers where attacking the spanish lorries with spanish agricultural products, and dumping their contents, while french Police where looking the other way, and that happened for many years after Spain had joined the EU. They broke their promise on many rail, tunnels and highway joint projects. When you go to France crossing the pirenees fron Spain you have this incredible 3 lane motorways and tunnels, only to get greeted by a narrow high mountain road in the french side. I'm sure France is gonna delay this pipeline forever, giving false hopes, to change their mind again later on. The best thing Spain should do is to scrap the "French Connection" inmediately, and start to lay down a maritime pipeline with Italy, which could be expensier, but there are hopes that Brussels would fund it, though I believe France would try to stop that too.

Nuclear power plants are the way to go for low carbon emissions and as a backup until better energy storage can be developed. If Europe was ever cut off to natural gas by Russia, I assume the transition to backups like nuclear and securing new trade deals/supplies would come much faster than expected. Russia could have a great deal to lose if this does happen, so it could be a delicate balancing act.

I did not even bothered to read all of your comment, but just the first line and half showed me how uninformed your opinion on nuclear really is: nuclear power is not popular, not because it is dangerous, not because of nuclear pollution in mines where uranium is extracted. The real reason of nuclear energy lack of popularity is that nuclear is the most expensive energy in real terms (considering construction cost and maintenance), the nuclear reactors take more than 10 billions to build, they take close to a decade or more to be operational (assuming that your country is efficient and experienced doing this type of projects). Nuclear is not scalable, it is either too big or too small. Nuclear requires setting up special organism to deal with the safety and the security (as in not being stolen) for the radioactive plants and materials, it is by far the heaviest industry that a country can have and the most regulated... and there is also the nimby, even the nuclear fans would not want to have a nuclear power station in their backyards. I certainly don't want my government using my taxes on nuclear when there are clearly cheaper and faster alternatives.

1- Morocco tried to invade Algeria one year after its independence not 4 years.
2- the territorial dispute wasn't over the Western Sahara but about Tindouf and Bechar, Moroccans claim that Tindouf and Bechar belong to them and France took it away, so despite signing treaties that clearly state that Tindouf and Bechar are Algerian lands, Moroccans tried to invade their war torn neighbor and this is where everything started.
3- After 1963 Algeria started to see Morocco as an expansionist state that must be stopped at all cost, that's why Algeria fully support the Polisario to curb Morocco's expansionist desires.
4- For the gas to start reflowing as it used to Algeria has one major request: Spain needs to revert its support for the Autonomy plan unlike what was stated in the video.

The real issue is the bargaining, scope, if France and EU wants it more than Spain, Spain will ask for something like a 20/80 cost split where EU/France pays for 80% of the cost and more than likely this will be a price plus not a fix cost. Just because France employs worker in Morocco & French is the language of commerce in Morocco since French Colonization… it does not mean there is not also a special relationship with Spain, as the relationship between US & Mexico is special.
Morocco is closer to being a border country with Spain, than Morocco is with France.
The Moors from Morocco invaded Spain, not long after Morocco was conquered by the Arabs & Islamized. On 1492, Spain officially threw off the yoke of the invading Moors.
Later, central Morocco became a protectorate of France, while the North of Morocco and Western Sahara became protectorates of Spain.
This seems key to understanding Spain’s recognition of West Sahara becoming part of Morocco… Spain used to administer it, there is a good relationship between Spain & Morocco, some Spanish cities remain in Morocco, and if natural gas is found in West Sahara… Spain has those historical relationships with Morocco (and the pipeline) to make future gas harvesting flow to Europe. Also, Morocco has a huge undersea power cable to Spain. Also Morocco has the opportunity to create green hydrogen via solar and ship it to Europe via Spain’s undersea pipeline.
Morocco has historic ties that pre-date & post-date French colonialism… even if French is the main language of commerce in Morocco.

I know a little bit about this since the Americas was “discovered” by Spain on the same year they gained their independence from the Moors.
Just because people toggle between colonizers and colonies, like Spain & Morocco, does not mean the cultural bounds disappear.
In the same way, the UK & US still have strong cultural bounds, even though the UK largely colonized them (and Spain and France), yet the US helped bail the UK (and Spain and France) out of two world wars.
      “where are you from?”
I am from The American Colonies, but don’t start thinking that most Americans are like me, my ethnicity is not Western European.
The separation from ethnicity helps me see things more clearly for what they really are, without bigotry or personal hard feelings or guilt / self hatred. Things are what they are, we have to get over them, appreciate the lessons learned, and continue:.. no earthly civilization past had figured this much stuff (go to the moon, wired communication, wireless communication, going to Mars, sending craft able to communicate with us from outside the solar system, etc.)

Spain tends to "miss the train", and possibly, in this case, it is already lost.
The MidCat pipeline has never been to the taste of the French, and Macron is currently opposed to the project. Honestly, I see Italy more as the distributor of Algerian gas to Europe than Spain.
The US has "poisoned" Spain's relationship with Algeria. They win economically, selling LNG to Spain and geopolitically.
Last January 2022, the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, met in Washington with US Secretary of State Blinken. They established "join efforts" to solve the "problem" of Western Sahara.
Later in March, Albares met in Madrid with Wendy Sherman, US Assistant Secretary of State. In his appearance in the Spanish Congress, Albares denied discussing the Saharawi issue with the US diplomat. A week later, President Sánchez sent the letter to Mohamed VI in which he signed the agreement to start a new stage with the neighbouring country.
Having said this, Morocco recently discovered potential gas reserves; perhaps Spain has not made a wrong decision; we will see how these discoveries develop in the nearly future.

The world's second biggest owner of gas reservoirs after Russia is "IRAN"! But you don't talk about it much and you should make a video about it. There is a gas pipeline connecting Iran To Turkey which gas could be sent to Europe through it. Iran currently has shortage of gas production due to technical problems caused by sanctions but it is also swapping the gas of the republic of Turkmenistan (another major producer of natural gas) to Azerbaijan through it's pipelines and the volume of that gas can be increased and part of it sent to Europe through Turkey.
And one other big Fact: The world's third biggest producer of gas which exports most of its gas as liquefied gas is Qatar which is also a neighbor of Iran and the main gas field of both countries in the Persian gulf is a shared gas field so by just building a very short pipeline connecting the gas fields of Qatar to Iran's huge gas pipeline network, a big part of Qatari gas can go to Europe through Iran and Turkey. A few days ago I saw news about negotiating an agreement between Iran and Qatar for such a pipeline.

In recent global geopolitics everyone is smarter than Germany! Except the Bolsheviks in ww1 , they gave 1/3 of their industry to the wrong side just before the war ended (genius) as means to take power, with a civil war that cost 13 million lives vs 1.5 million from ww1 and now Piutin wants it back after a century of exploitation & hatred among them!

Man you could have done so much more of this topic with just a few more research :
    - Morocco has found gas and they are building a pipeline that’s starts from Nigeria and goes to Morocco. We already have a pipeline gaz with Spain so we aim to provide European market as an alternative to Russia.
    - Algeria’s gaz reserves are decreasing a lot for two reasons : a growing population and a catastrophic policy of reservoir maintenance.
    - Morocco is the best Arabic “democracy”, we have a king but we do vote for our government, and we have achieved something quite rare : we voted for “Islamist party” and we throw them out by the same principle of vote.
In Algeria when they voted for “islamists” they went through a 10 years civilian war that cost the lives of more than 250 000 algerians by the military that are ruling right now.
Who’s the closest to democracy : their military presidential system or our Monarchy with a parliament ?
    - Concerning Spain’s recognition of the Moroccan Sahara it was motivated by many truth : the fact that the Sahara was always Moroccan and Spain knows it since she colonised it and knows that Morocco is their first African economical partner while they don’t have no major partnerships with Algeria.
    - Algeria wants the Moroccan Sahara so they created a community of some saharawi people and a mix of terrorist from Sahel and Iran and Also Wagner (1000 members) all brang by algeria to make war on Morocco but meanwhile Morocco keeps developing the whole country and Sahara cities of Morocco are pure jewels like : Laayoune or Dakhla when algeria jails a whole community children included for a lost war and a lost cause. Morocco keep winning the diplomatic side with all the new countries recognising the Moroccan Sahara when algerians lives at the age of stone.
    - there is also the topic of the “mont tropiques” it’s a mountain underwater that belongs to Morocco that is full of rare metals, Morocco will become a major asset in electrical car’s manufacturing as they already are the first car manufacturing exporter in Africa fifth in the world.
Morocco is the present and the future of this area, our American partner knows that so well !

Missing point in why Spain sided Morocco could be the resolution of water territory conflict on minerals cobalt and tellurium in the waters between the Spanish-governed Canary Islands and Moroccan territory. No county take side if it doesn't get something in return.

Do your research, the map is wrong and Sahara is moroccan ? Algeria have created and imaginary front that are residing inside Algeria. As a Morocco citizen the piece of land u took off the map i can move there freely. In the other side Algeria have gather some people from mali and Algeria and they pretend that they are from Morocco. Do your research you always miss up information.
