  • At around 12:30 PM in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Fire Department EMS 9 was responding code 3 to a call, when it collided with another vehicle driven by a young woman. The crash occurred at the intersection of Veteran Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.
There were no injuries in this incident, only resulting in moderate damage to both the departments vehicle and the other vehicle.
This post was not made the point blame at either of the people involved, simply to show what happened. Please refrain from rushing to conclusions and let the department run their investigation.
At the end of the first clip you can see Rescue 94 almost hit another car, please be sure to be mindful in both positions.

@@donstarr7261 true, but either way, the civilian was just as much at fault. Emergency vehicles have flashy lights, sirens, and air horns for a reason. I can hear and see them very well, and when I do hear one I check my area in a 360 view, and when I see the vehicle in sight, I slow down and pull over. If I have to stop I stop. Yes they have to yield to traffic and clear intersections, but that’s not only for safety reasons, but because of dumbasses like the moron in the VW that didn’t pay attention. There’s so many people that blow off emergency vehicles running code, even when they do yield and clear intersections. It pisses me off honestly, and in this instance the responding unit had to back out the call and tend to this low IQ individual because they decided to accelerate through the intersection without listening and checking for additional emergency vehicles.

It's hard to even hear where the sirens are coming from when inside of a vehicle. it's the emergency vehicle's responsibility to clear both left and right before crossing. But we all make mistakes and i hope the driver didn't get the blame and got his car fixed.

Then, as I drove through an uncontrolled intersection (one with stop signs on the cross street but not for me), a police cruiser with lights and sirens suddenly appeared on the cross street to my left, and he turned right (going in the opposite direction I am). It was literally the exact same situation as this, except the emergency vehicle turned right instead of going straight (and the intersection didn't have stop lights). Most people are saying it was confusing for people to know that 2 were coming from different directions, but heres reasons how you would've been aware:
    1. The ambulance blew their loud horns, had a different siren from the ems van
    2. The ems van still waited and made sure everyone stopped and yielded
    3. The siren of the ambulance would've already faded, and you would hear the ems van over it. The driver seemed pretty aware there was another van coming and thought he had a chance to pass it
    4. 90% of drivers love to drive after 1 emergency vehicle pass, not slowing down to see if another will pass
    5. Im certain the red lights were visible since it was over the vehicle, and everyone was able to see it
    6. If the driver slowed to see why the vehicle stopped, that driver would've seen that something was up leaving that driver with 0 survival instincts
So it's definitely the drivers fault

Due regard and EVOC teaches us that when you go through a red light, you are to treat every lane as its own intersection and clear them 1 at a time, stopping at them before proceeding through. This doesn’t take away from the idiocy of the general public drivers, but unfortunately the liability will likely fall on the emergency vehicle driver.

    • @dbyers3897

Incorrect, the fault is shared by both drivers as they were both moving & failed to operate with due care. The white vehicle had a green light but failed to yield to an emergency vehicle which may result in a fine of ~$500. The EMS car failed to properly clear the intersection before proceeding as you stated but had siren & red lights activated. If there were injuries, which is doubtful due to the low speeds & minor damages, or serious damage, either might require mitigation via legal action.

The white VW then stops, as EMS 9 enters the intersection from the opposite travel direction and slows its travel, allowing RA 71 to proceed through, then EMS 9 continues through the intersection. The operator of the VW was obviously fixated on the travel of RA 71 and then continued through the intersection on the green light, not realizing EMS 9 was proceeding through the intersection as well. The vehicle code states that private vehicles are to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles when operating with red light & siren active. The VW will be cited for failure to yield. Working fire trucks, ambulances, and cop cars emergency vehicles they are responding to help, they definitely get a pass if Involved in a crash. Battalion chief Tahoe SUV, needs to slow down and obey traffic laws, if he is 3 minutes late getting to a scene, there will still be plenty of time for him to pretend like he's the big boss in charge of the scene.

I once yielded to a ladder truck going code 3 at an intersection and three cars behind me got mad. One of which aggressively over took me and almost got wiped out by the fire truck. All the while the two other drivers kept honking at me.
I think its more telling of current USA society than a lack of awareness and driving skills.

I live in Canada in the Province of Ontario and all vehicles are required, by law, to pull to the right and stop for approaching or following emergency vehicles with their red lights flashing. Emergency vehicles usually yield and slow down at intersections as this fire vehicle did but may still be liable if they hit another vehicle in the intersection that had a green light and may have been distracted. Regardless, the non-emergency vehicle, in this province still was required to yield. I wonder how this will play out in California.

+ Looks like idiocy gets to people during that intersection. RA71, RA92 almost got hit, used MAJOR Airhorn.
And obviously EMS9 got hit. 😢

@@kenkoller478Yup. This video basically just shows wanton disregard for the vehicle code sections on driving code 3 and training standards and for the safety of the city’s citizens.
