  • Emergency services are here to help all of us, they save lives and we want to be able to count of them when we need them the most. Sadly first responders around the world have to deal with a lot of disrespectful behaviors while trying to respond to life and death emergencies. In this video you will see some of these frustrating cases, filmed at Firehall No. 2 in Vancouver. PLEASE respect the men and women who risk their safety to protect ours, GIVE WAY TO EMERGENCY VEHICLES!

      Guys take it from me. Considering I'm on a fire department. I've seen some freakin idiots. Every second matters to these guys the people in the casualties. If their response time is bad they get judged they say we suck people start to hate us. If we had good response time people wouldn't hate us. The idiots out there when you see a big RED TRUCK driving out of a building with lights and sirens don't block them pull over let them pass. Then you continue. I hope this helped.

      I drove a fire engine for 8 years... you either learn INFINITE PATIENCE or you'll have a collision. Our dept. mandated that you slow in ALL limited visibility & 'lighted' intersections, & proceed DEAD SLOW if you're breaking a red light. Also, not to drive faster than 5mph above the posted limited ( although we cheated a bit sometimes ) Here's 2 pieces of 'wisdom' for you: 1) you can't treat the patient unless you GET THERE SAFELY... & 2): I had a 37-year career as a medic & had probably at least 15,000 patient contacts; in that time there were fewer than a half-dozen whose outcome _could_ have been different if we'd gotten there 30 sec. sooner by blasting through red lights, vs. dozens of close calls due to inattentive drivers that we managed to avoid...

    People seem to think (at least act like in my opinion) that they are more important then every one else including emergency vehicles with lights and siren(s) activated for an emergency call. Seconds do count. If more people would think about what if that emergency unit was being blocked for 1 minute by some foolish person. While that unit was en route to me or some one I care a lot about and that person died or had a bad out come because of that other person car. How would they feel? That might get them to pay attention and yield the right of way. Even pedestrians should yield to emergency vehicle when they are going to an emergency.

      @John Arat Yes, I mean the fire "medic" (not sure why they refer to it as "medic" considering they only operate at first responder level). Sure they have the right of way, it still doesn't stop the operator from backing up and moving on. Hell, even when he couldn't have pulled forward he sat and waited an extra four seconds. There's nothing wrong with firefighters fixing a situation too by using a bit of common sense. What fire lane? What are you talking about?

    • @greyman686
      @greyman686 Před 4 lety

      @John Arat Looks like the city of Vancouver needs to mark the street or put signage up to tell motorists. If there's no marking, and I can't find anything saying you can't stop in front of a firehall in traffic, then they probably will stop there. Sure, it should be common sense not to but common sense isn't so common these days.

    • @greyman686
      @greyman686 Před 4 lety

      @John Arat I know what a fire lane is but thanks for continuing to explain it lol. So I looked it up and Vancouver traffic bylaw says no stopping with 6 meters of a firehall on the same side or 25 meters on opposite side. Now is that 6 meters from the front of the station or 6 meters from the curb. One way the driver wouldn't be in violation but either way it must not be enforced given the cop would likely be in violation too.

Back then people had common sense and knew from experience how to nudge people gently with the nice, chrome bumper in front of the 33,000+ pound fire engine with 500 gallons of water! Sometimes just the knowledge that they could and would do that made a huge difference. Back in the good ole days when we actually rode "back step" and always kept a couple spare spanner wrenches in the hose bed in case someone wanted to intrude on that "Stay Back 500 Feet!" What many people fail to realize - if the person driving the fire truck decides your vehicle needs to move, they can and will wreck your vehicle with theirs, with no liability. You'll be footing the bill for their damages, too. And that taxi at the end really didn't have time to react.

    • @Sara-L

      @Verbal Diarrhea Most municipal fire departments have immunity from claims of damages during the line of duty, even if you're at fault. I imagine it must be different in the department you are in though.
      I do agree that it's on first responders to drive safely, given the fact that most people in little matchbox cars often don't. Failure to yield, cutting off ambulances, running red lights, tailgating ladder trucks, etc.

    For a minute there, I thought you were filming in Toronto :P Great catches! I was a bit surprised the crews didn’t use their bullhorn much on the motorists (that first fire truck’s an exception :P). The police, fire and ems crews here in Toronto are known to really hammer down the bullhorn or air horn on unaware motorists and driving through intersections with a red light facing them :P
    For example, if the taxi failing to yield took place in Toronto, the first response vehicle would have laid down the bullhorn as the taxi drives by : P

      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  Před 5 lety

      SnipballTheBestBall Thank you! Yea I mean every city and department has its different styles and habits. Vancouver Fire & Rescue aren’t known for using a lot of horn, but it also depends on the driver. From personal experience inside emergency vehicles I also found that it can be harder to reach for the bullhorn ‘button’ than using the regular siren functions (depending on the set-up and system). Let’s hope they don’t need to use the siren like crazy all the time in order to get anywhere...

Well... the fire truck finally came about 100yrds of me so I pulled to the side with my indicator on and stayed there. Now the funny part of this is that as I pulled over... the idiot behind me got annoyed that I pulled to the curb giving him no room to pass, so he swerved around me and guns his engine. I raise my hands in the meaning "dude, are u serious?" He realizes why I pulled over about 50ft ahead of me and proceeds to pull over for the fire truck. A tree fell on campus hitting a girl wearing earbuds. Many who witnessed it called 911. It happened in an ADA parking area behind a main lot, hard to get to if you don't know how to access it. Knowing this, I cleared the drive of the State golf carts where the Execs illegally park them to eat at the Cafeteria, and manually opened the gate entrance to the lot, ready to wave the EMTs in when they arrived. BUT... the State Police arrived sooner and blocked off that entrance with their vehicles, and then walked to where the girl was. The EMT arrives, and pulls in but can't get to the girls location due to the idiot officers who parked their vehicles in the middle of road and walked away. Forcing the EMT to turn around and try entering from the backside to get close enough. Of course another State officer had parked their car against the "exit" gate. Forcing the EMT to back up about 100 ft to get out of that dead end... Finally having to do what I was trying to avoid the entire time, by driving through the main parking lot around every turn for about 1/4 mile to get to the girl 100 ft away. All while these idiots officers stood there, wondering what the EMTs were doing.... Wanted to slap them.

    The second guy in the jeep grand Cherokee defense, he was where he was well before the medic truck initiated it's emergency gear.
    It is illegal to backup on a road.

    this is so common in Vancouver. Self Absorbed pedestrians and drivers glued to their cell phones, IGNORING or not even realizing there is an emergency vehicle trying to get by., They are also the first people to BITCH when Emergency (Police / fire / EMS) do not arrive fast enough when they call them. Should be a $10,000 fine to start. Its really bad in Richmond.
